good afternoon YouTube my name is Brandon and this door behind me looks terrible and we're going to do something about it today in my previous video which I'll put a link up above - you guys had said that you wanted to see more detailed shots and more of an instructional video on how to replace the original door trims with the synthetic or this composite door trim well this video is just for that so for you guys that want to know more about the step-by-step nut-and-bolt process of replacing the trims this video is for you if you want to just see a quick overview a much more condensed video click on that link right there and it'll take you to another video pretty much like this one with less instructions so here's the stuff we're using it's veranda high performance cellular PVC trim it's got a limited lifetime warranty and as you can see right there it's good for exterior use you could paint it doesn't crack raw split insect and moisture resistant which is all good stuff for pretty much any climate then any of you guys may live in and it's 12 millimeters thick so it's fairly thin that's what we need for the trims we're going to just be replacing exactly pretty much what we had but with vinyl trim this is referred to as brick mold in the industry so that's the vinyl trim we're going to be using so now the first thing we got to do which is what anyone would do is assess the damage to figure out just how much are we taking on when we begin the project so we can see we've got a little bit of rot here and these are going to be replaced these are going to be replaced looks like we have a rust issue here on the hinges so that would entail probably replacing with something stainless steel which is exactly what we're going to do and we've got some peeling paint issues up here which the new trims will take care of that rust issues on the handle so we'll replace that with a stainless steel handle and we've got some more water issues here Moisture so first thing we need to do is get this screen door off [Applause] the next step in order is to get these original wooden brick molds off doesn't really matter if we destroy them but we also want to be careful of this area in here around the door because this part is not getting replaced so we're gonna have to be careful when we take that apart so now I'm just going around with a hammer ripping off all the brick molds and if any of the pieces break it's not a big deal they're all getting replaced anyways I'm just trying to be careful not to damage the actual door casing the door frame itself [Music] so now that we have the brick molds off now is an excellent time to go around if you have a gap along here to fill this either with expanded foam or with some batt insulation here I've already already been filled I filled it from the backside but if you do decide to use foam insulation make sure that you use the minimal expanding foam because if you use the regular stuff you'll bow this Jam all the way out and you don't want that it'll be terrible this is also a good time to add some additional security to your door especially on the hinge side so as you can see here you can see see how that screw right there looks different than the others that's because that screw right there and I've done it to the middle top and bottom that screw is extremely long it goes all the way into the framing so that a bad person couldn't kick this door in or would make it more difficult and if you do that you're going to want to add you're going to want to add some shim material to that and that's the time to do it is right now if you want to add some added security to your door you're going to want to slightly tuck in some shims here and then wind some nice long screws into that jamb and you can do that at the very top and do the same thing at the bottom that will add additional security to your door to prevent it from being kicked in same thing over here on the left side and if you have a deadbolt same thing there you're going to want to shim the door in between the the casing and the framing you don't want to trim it so much that it spreads it out but you want to shim it enough so that when you run these longer screws into that framing that it doesn't suck the door in with it so this is an excellent time to do this part of the project now to add some additional security and to add some additional insulation so the next step for us right here now is to clean up all this talking and pull all these nails you'll notice that in a lot of my videos whenever I pull nails like to use wire cutters and I keep a pair of wire cutters right in my tool bag just for that reason just because they're so effective that pulling nails and they grab the nail really good you don't have to worry about the heads popping off like you do you're using a hammer claw and here I'm just going around cleaning up all that caulking just using it just using a putty knife getting it smooth and cleaned up and get all that loose caulking off this [Music] so now we've got it all cleaned up and the next thing we got to do is measure the distance to replace this board I've already done that I've got a distance of four and a half inches on this side and a distance of four and three quarters on this side and yes it's a different measurement but we're not going to we're not going to sweat that so and that's to go right over the top of this so the next thing we're going to do is hit the table saw so now I'm ripping down the four and a half now looking down the four and three quarters and the leftover for some of that will also be used for the top which is what I'm measuring now [Music] may turn off that top piece and I'm going to put a link up above because I'm doing speed cutting here and I do speed cutting on all these cuts if you want to know a little bit more about to be cutting them what that is click on the link I think you'll find a real useful a little graffiti on the old trim that we'll covering up you'll see what that says here in a minute there's our seat cutting I'll put a link up above that [Music] you [Music] this could be done without the use of a finish nailer you have to pre-drill everything and you'd want to use galvanized fasteners and for this I'm using 2-inch galvanized finish nails so there now we have all our base trims on and now we have to put in what's called furring strips and the reason we don't carry this trim all the way on to the door because what if you wanted to replace the door then you'd end up having to tear this trim off again so the purpose of this is that this stays attached to the building and this part here will be built out or furrow is what it's called as a furring strip and that will just be a piece that we rip that just gets attached to here and it's the same thickness as this material and then our brick mold will go on top of that so that's what we got to do right now so the camera didn't record me ripping down the furring strips but all it is is just a leftover from the scrap pieces of the sides just rip them down to about three-quarter inches wide put some caulking on and nailed them on like you see here so now I'm being a little foolish trying to tie this PVC trim in an honest cut pretty close not quite though so now we just measuring up the brick mold pieces and cut them to length so what I've done here is uh before I put the brick mold on I actually ran a bead of caulking on the outside edge and the inside edge on the backside is brick mold and I just tipped it up into place and I'm shooting a nail on it probably about every 12 inches on the hinge side especially because that's where the film door or that little swinging door attaches and I wanted to be rough same thing on the top kind of a different angle but you guys get an idea of where I shoot the nails in and you'll see on this next piece that I put up how the caulking will start squeezing out shooting in the side down bottoms with caulk and squeezes I'll tell what you know that you got a nice feel on please run your finger over to talk it out there and extend it all up meeting [Music] and with that we are done let me bring you in and show you we have a few more just small details to do to it but nothing major talking basically let me bring in show you how it came out so we got the screen door all back on came out I didn't really show that it's pretty basic I just replaced the hinges it just it went on the same way it came off so we've got stainless steel hinges now we went on for way about rust and replace this latch with a stainless steel latch and so we're going to put a little bit of caulking right here which is no big deal and I'll probably run a bead of caulking all the way up along that crack there and I'll do the same thing at the top all the way around but other than that came out super awesome and guess what no more painting period then that look better so that's all there is to it guys pretty straightforward I tried to use the minimal amount of tools it's possible I could have cut the 45s using the speed cutting method as I've linked in the description but I have a chop saw so I might as well use it and I could have ripped the board's down also using a skill SAR not a table setup but again I have a table saw so I might as well use it so but this can be done using basic tools just like that and no more painting which I really love so this is something you like please don't forget to rate comment and subscribe thanks for watching guys and have a good day I'm going to go toss back a cold one [Music]
