our staircase looks antique but it's very much 21st century originally in old staircases the newel posts held everything together here the newel posts are just helping the railings to stay in place Reilly was here last week helping the followed it all together let's watch before we get started with the handrail we have some prep work to do first we have to remove the temporary handrail used during construction next we add the trim moldings along the walls then we remove the protective tread covers from the stairs now we're ready to get going we've already got these balances and railing in place but what they really needed to do first was to get this new post set which is critical and what you want to be careful of doing is making sure that when it's in this nosing does not come proud of the newel post and its sentence so that the opposing nosing also lands in the same spot which is puts us where Dale is going to get our last new posts for us right now now the way the fellows from Port City staircase have assured that we're going to be centered where we want to be is they have lined up the newel posts so dead center is on the line of plaster right here they've done the same thing on the opposing wall then we're ready actually we're ready right now we can go ahead and cut our nosing which they've laid out ahead of time for us all these dowels they started from a center line and went left and right ok now this should fit right in there and you can see now with this into a post in the correct spot a nice square fit on both ends and the inlet closing is not proud of the new post that can go right into place ok now Dale can finish this up by putting the the apron underneath it with the moldings you know that last piece he's putting on is just a three quarter inch scotia before Dale sets the ballast is he puts a little glue in the dowel holes the balances are all dialed on the bottom end now he's just setting the balusters all you really need is the glue on the bottom to hold them you can see on the profile of this cap there's an area here that's going to receive the top of those balusters now just drive a screw through the newel post to catch it that's good and snug now we just glue a plug in the newel post and tap it in first Dale checks to make sure each balusters is plumb and then nails it the last piece is to go into these Philip pieces and they'll just go in between each balusters at the top okay well now we're ready to put on this rake rail which is going down the stairs and really the trickiest part of this is getting this angle cut on them honey how do you get that cut yup well we calculate the angle by the rise run of the stair bob let's pound simple enough okay now we just attach it the same way we did previous ones for the three inch screw it's good top now we need one on the bottom okay forget the balises up top we've all been dialed in and secured now but the ones on the bottom down the stairs you've cut the dowels off that's great right yeah well we had to do that these are all cut to match the specific rise and run of the state uh-huh okay aren't you worried about them spinning around not really on a squirt out top application you can see the rails plows and once they put in a plow this square top holds them pretty securely in place so that's going to be good and secure okay and the way they've laid them out is you can see the face of the balusters here lines up with the face of the spirit board all the way down and then the other one just centers on all of those why is he handing on the bottom we hand nail the bottoms and then set that nail because you really don't get a good enough bite with an air nailer okay so now we just add Filip pieces between these ballast is to finish it up well that's a lot of stair rail to get done and a half a day and it looks terrific thanks a lot Jeff thank you okay
