Installing Active Directory on Windows Server on Virtual Machine (Home Lab)

foreign guys welcome back to the channel and for today's video we will talk about active directory Basics and I will also show you how to build your own active directory in your home lab so you can practice on your own and all you need is a computer and the internet oh before we get started with the video and the tutorial and the basics of active directory I would like to mention that this video will be divided into two parts first part of the video is showing how to install active directory in Windows 7 in a virtual machine and part two will be talking about active directory Basics from creating OU users groups and how it's typically used in the workplace also please don't forget to like this video and hit on the Subscribe button if you're new to the channel and if you like it Tech and unboxing videos now let's get started with the part one of the video so accept actually is one of the top skills required when applying for jobs and it's really important to know the skills the directory is a database and set of services that connect users with the network resources they need to get their work done in short it enables admin to Grant permissions and access to network resources active directory stores objects that can be users groups like accounting HR sales engineering I.T devices like computers printers servers and applications and if you're new to IIT and want to learn the top skills and the basics you can absolutely make a home lab so you can practice on it so let's begin the video by installing virtual machine first and then Windows server and then active directory hello guys so for this first part of the video we are gonna do three things and the first one is to set up the virtual machine and then next is set up Windows Server last step is to install active directory so active directory tools can only be installed in Windows Pro and Enterprise so if you are making your own home lab you are most likely using your personal computer and you are using Windows home so you're not going to be able to install active directory so for this training we are just going to use Windows Server so you will also be familiarized with the Windows Server environment so now let's get started by setting up your virtual machine if you already have a virtual machine in your personal computer you can skip this part but for those who doesn't have a VM let's get started with this first step okay so if you open your browser you can Google VMware workstation player download and when you click on that you can scroll down and if you see this workstation for Windows if you have a Windows machine you can go ahead and click on this if you have Linux click on this one so let's go and download it and just remember where you've downloaded might be safe to just save it on the downloads okay so when it's done downloading you can click on it okay so we will just install it now just click on next accept next and just click on next until it installs and finishes so you will now see this VMware Workstation icon and just open this and this will prompt and just click on continue because your using it non-commercially and finish and we can now create and open our virtual machines so now that we have our virtual machine ready let's now move on to the next step which is to install and set up Windows Server so you can go to your browser and Google Microsoft Evaluation Center and click on that and when you go to the top and see Windows Server you can select the Windows server and let's go with server 2019 because that works better than 2022 for virtual machines in my experience so just click on that and if you see this download the iso click on that next and just fill this up and when you are ready just click on download now and after clicking download now this is going to show and we just want to select English iso download 64-bit Edition and just save it under your download so it's easy to remember and this usually takes a little while so it depends on your internet speed but let's get back to it when it's done downloading all right so if you have finished downloading the iso for Windows 2019 it will show in your downloads and then we can go ahead now and open up VMware again and this is where we set up our virtual machine with the Windows Server image so what you want to do next is to click on create new virtual machine and then you will choose this one I will install the operating system later this one doesn't really work well so when you click on this click on next and click on Microsoft Windows and the version is Windows Server 2019 because that's what we're going to use and click on next and if you want to change this go ahead and just check the location if you're fine with that click on next and I think this is going to be fine for our practice home lab click on next and if you click on customize Hardware this is important uh sell that new CD DVD you have to select use ISO image file so it can load the iso that you just downloaded for Windows Server so you can go ahead to the downloads and click on the iso image and make sure that the path has been populated with the iso image file and click on close and click on finish and you should have your virtual machine created in here so if you right click on this and go to settings if you check you should have this in here to make it work okay so now let's power on your newly created Virtual Machine by pressing this power on icon here or right clicking and selecting power on okay so you just have to enter any key and it will start the setup and just click on next and click on install now all right so let's select this one the desktop experience because you want the display and the graphical environment for this and click on next click accept and next and just select custom and you could go ahead and click on next here and that is just gonna install everything and just wait for it to finish all right so when it's done installing it's gonna restart the virtual machine all right so now we can enter the password for the administrator just enter whatever password that you want in here and click on finish all right so we now have our Windows server on your virtual machine and that's all we need to install active directory okay so now let's move on to the very last step for this first part of the video which is installing active directory so if you go ahead and press Ctrl alt delete here on top of the virtual machine to log in and type in the password that you just created for the administrator here let's maximize this and as you can see you are now in your Windows server so the server manager will pop up when you log in and this is what we need to install our active directory tools so if we go to manage add roles and features we can now add active directory in here and if you can click next here and make sure that role based or feature-based installation is selected click next and you can go ahead and click click next here as well and look for active directory domain services and click on ADD features and make sure that this is checked and click on next and next in here as well and next and if you see the install button here ready click on that and it's going to start installing active directory tools on your Windows server so this is going to get exciting because we are gonna start our home lab for our training for active directory here okay so when you see that this has finished do not click on the close button here yet we have to click on promote This Server to a new control a domain controller so we have to click here and this will give you three options and we want to select this option add a new Forest since this is a very new server and a very new active directory that we are going to install we should add a new Forest to this and we should name our new active directory domain name to like uh ad lab dot local of course you can use any name that you want this is just an example and you click on next here okay so let's select in here for the forest functional level the highest that they have even if we have a Windows Server 2019 let's just max this uh specification in here and let's just uh unclick this because we are not gonna install this at the moment and go ahead and type in the password for the admin here click next and this should just populate with the name for the domain that we assigned earlier okay so now we see the name we can click on next okay so let's just leave the defaults here click on next and make sure that everything is correct and here it has the correct domain name and if everything looks good click on next and it's gonna check if you met all the prerequisites here before it's gonna install okay so you should see here there's a green check mark it means that it means that all prerequisites pass successfully and you will now be able to install at active directory here so go ahead and click on install and just wait for it to finish okay so when it's done computer will restart so you can click on close here and it's gonna restart to install active directory tools okay when it's done restarting let's log in again and as you can see now it has the domain name that we assigned to it ad lab before it was just administrator so it means that it worked and we have a new domain controller now so just type in a password and if you go to the server manager again you can see under Tools that you now have the different active directory Tools in here and what we need to use for this training is the active directory users and computers and if you see here you now see the assigned name that we have named our domain controller which is AD lab dot local so if you see that it means that it all worked and you're all set for your home lab all right so part one of this active directory Basics tutorial is done if you want to learn now about basic active directory like creating OU users groups and the typical application for how to use active directory in the workplace check out the next video for part two alright so if you see the users here you can right click on it and you would see new in here and there is a lot of options on what object you can create under users so there's computer there's contact group there's printer user
