Installing a Window Unit in a PopUp Camper

hey everybody this is hobbit and this is the third video about acs that i wanted to make and um as i mentioned in uh the other video where i went through the pros and cons of different types of acs or methods to cool the pop-up uh in this video what i wanted to show you is how i installed a window unit in the new pop-up that i have and so um i just wanted to walk through sort of the bracing of it and some of the issues that led me to choose the the window unit here is the window unit that i installed in the in the the new pop-up and the bracing is really simple it's just some two by fours and i've seen some pictures of this online but i couldn't find any videos and so i thought i'd just make a quick video on how i did it i just put these two by fours here and they um they go you know up underneath the uh the roof there and then they rest just on the lip here and then just sort of natural physics um the weight of the the ac unit keeps it in place but i'll probably put some strapping or something just in case but um this is what it looks like on the outside and you know a couple of two by fours you know maybe 10 bucks and then i just got some of these heavy duty uh shelf brackets um from lowe's they were about six or eight bucks a piece um and uh i could have done probably without those but i just wanted to i wanted to make sure i'm more of a belt and suspenders kind of guy but this is what it looks like from the outside and fits nice and snug is what the unit looks like from the inside of the camper and um you'll notice here i just have um the top part of the the window unzipped and i have some uh some foam in here that i just kind of wrapped around the edge but this works really well it just shoots air straight into the camper and it is very efficient in terms of cooling the inside of the camper the this particular unit has a digital panel so it's relatively easy to just turn on press the power and then you can hear it um in terms of the noise versus the portable ic this is substantially more quiet and um there's the added benefit of there's obviously nothing inside the camper that's taking up space and all that kind of stuff so um this is just on medium and the fan's on medium and it's on cool and i mean it is like instantly cooler in here and i really can't describe for you how how well this works even though you would you'd think that it might not just because it's literally an ac that's just pushed up against a screen um but it is it works so so well and my brother uh he had a pop-up for a long time he had a rooftop ac and his was like a 13 000 btu unit and this is just a little 6000 btu window unit and it is every bit as effective uh as my brother's rooftop ac with the added benefit of um there's nothing on my roof and i never have to worry about you know leaks from the the uh the hole in the ceiling or sagging or anything like that so um i really i really love this i think it's amazing all right i just showed you the um the setup and here it is behind me just so you can see it further but um basically like i said in the other video that that i kind of went through all the different types of acs the reason i decided to choose the uh the window unit is i didn't want to cut a hole in the floor for the portable ac and i didn't want a rooftop ac and the portable ac wasn't cooling the inside of the camper nearly as well as i hoped and um i i literally decided to buy this and try it out in my garage and if it worked i was going to keep it and if it didn't i was just going to take it back and i turned it on and i just was amazed at how cold it was inside the camper and um i turned it on and actually i left and and i went to my son's soccer practice for like 30 30 minutes or so and when i came back it was just frigid inside the camper and um so i'm just i am thrilled with this and i was really skeptical um of how well this would work just putting an ac up up against the screen but without a doubt it's it's unbelievable how well this works and so i would just highly highly recommend it beyond the cooling functionality of it and how well it cools the inside of the camper um i mean this whole setup you know the lumber and everything it maybe cost 200 bucks and you know when you compare that to the 1300 plus that it would cost to put a nice rooftop ac on um i mean it's just there's just no comparison and so for anybody on the fence about um you know whether to go with this or how to cool the inside of their camper i mean absolutely go with the window unit you're not going to use it year round it's really small and compact so it's easy to store you can keep in the camper and travel with it and all that kind of stuff and so just the the benefits of this are really limitless i could just sit here and keep talking on and on about it um and so yeah i don't necessarily like how this looks because it looks a little janky or whatever but um but i just i'm thrilled with how well it works and how
