everybody at just 16 my next guest was diagnosed with breast cancer and in the two years since she's used her personal battle to raise awareness about the disease amongst teens please welcome today's extraordinary team our Shauna our Shauna how did how did you discover you had breast cancer when I was 12 my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and at that age I was thinking you know cancer meant death it was really really difficult but thank God that she pulled through and that she's now cancer-free she had always told me how important is to be aware of my body and to do regular self breast exams so because I did that I found a lump in my left breast it wasn't until after the surgery that I found out that the mass itself was benign but the tution around it was cancerous and I was only 16 at the time how'd you take that news um well it was it was overwhelming I was just about to start my junior year of high school so I was really excited for school you know go into class but I had to get ultrasounds and then surgery and then go to school it was just really hard to deal with that I'm I just remember my doctors telling me that if I didn't get it sooner it probably would have spread but I am now cancer-free so spend two years it's it was really difficult but I did a workshop to empower young women because I couldn't find any information about young women having breast cancers tell us tell us about this workshop my workshop is called be pretty and pink it's for middle school and high school girls who have dealt with breast cancer in any way um it's mostly to empower them tell them about how to do regular breast exams so it's it takes two seconds three fingers and you go around and then you're done and I did it mostly because I've been a Girl Scout for 14 years and I wanted to earn my gold award which is the highest whether you can get in Girl Scouts oh I did that I did the workshop just so that I really could just bring awareness to the community Wow this this workshop now though has gotten national attention yeah I'm sitting next to you so I guess what you talk about but I really honestly didn't think it was going to get this far I really just wanted to bring it out into the community I was on the news I was in newspapers and magazines but I just really just wanted to bring awareness um I remember many times where I had to drop my mom at the bus stop to use our car or I would ride the bus or practically beg people for rides just so that I could bring it out into Cleveland so you're just starting college right now uh-uh how do you juggle it all well I am a psychology major and dance minor at Baldwin Wallace University it's nothing like high school not even close but it's just it's just great for me because I want to be a clinical child psychologist and I just want to help children as much as I can so being there just helps me learn how to do that also the workshop helped me really figure out what I wanted to do because I was working with young girls and just being there and doing the workshop made me realize that I still want to do more workshops still want to help out with cancer and probably make be pretty pink into a nonprofit organization but I really don't honestly have the means to do it because my mom and I are just using our one car and I'm in college and she's not so well but you know there's there's always a way to make something happen you seem like a pretty uh pretty driven person first of all you accomplish a goal did you get the award the girls come yeah Aaron my go-to word you got it and you know see is it
