hello and welcome to another royal reviewer channel episode today we take a look at the royal vault saint george's chapel is a place of worship for the queen and the royal family as well as a church serving the local community built by kings shaped by the history of the royal family and still the location for both splendid royal events and private family moments so george's chapel at windsor castle in england is a chapel built in the late medieval perpendicular gothic style it is both a royal peculiar a church under the direct jurisdiction of the monarch and the chapel of the order of the garter it is located in the lower ward of the castle saint george's castle chapel was originally founded in the 14th century by king edward iii and extensively enlarged in the late 15th century it has been the scene of many royal services weddings and particularly in the 19th and 20th centuries burials although occasional monarchs and their consorts were buried at the castle from the 15th century it wasn't until the 19th century that's in george's chapel and the nearby frogmore gardens superseded westminster abbey as a chosen burial place for the british royal family the royal vault of windsor was created between 1804 and 1810 for george iii who died in 1820 and is one of three kings buried there also interred in the vault are george iv and william iv others buried there include george iii's wife queen charlotte and their daughter princess emilia george the fourth daughter princess charlotte and queen victoria's father the duke of kent the queen's father george vi was buried in the vault but was later moved to the king george vi memorial chapel which was built next to the north quiet isle between 1968 and 1969 the vault lies 16 feet below ground and is a stone lined room with a small altar at the far end which measures around 25 meters by 7 meters along each wall are shelves to hold coffins close to the entrance of the vault is a plinth on which the latest arrival is placed the coffin will either be moved to either a side shelf or final interment elsewhere in the room it was originally lit with oil lamps but this was changed to electric lights at the beginning of the 20th century it has not received a permanent residence since 1930 both the vault is used during the royal funerals at windsor after the funeral service of the royal the coffin is usually lowered by the electrically driven platform down to the corridor and into the vault the coffin will remain there until transferred to its final burial place phillips mother princess alice of battenberg who was born at windsor castle was laid to rest in the vault in 1969 but her coffin was later moved to the russian convent on the mount of olives near jerusalem in 1988 she had wanted to be buried near her aunt grand duchess elizabeth of russia the solemn moment the duke of edinburgh's coffin was lowered into the royal vault has been described by royal commentators as unique the duke of edinburgh's funeral took place on saturday the 17th of april 2021 at windsor castle when millions of viewers watched as his coffin was lowered into the vault beneath in george's chapel by an electric motor phillips coffin was put into the vault on a catapult in the choir and draped with his personal standard and decorated with a wealth of flowers and his navel cap and sword the interment normally takes place in private therefore being televised for the first time in history was a very poignant and unique moment while cameras did not capture the entire process tv coverage did show the start of the duke of edinburgh's coffin being moved down cameras then panned to bugles and bagpipes being played in honour of the duke's life when the footage resumed in the main chapel the coffin had fully descended into the vault at george vi funeral in 1952 the king's coffin was lowered into the vault but the proceedings were not televised so the working operation of the motor has never been broadcast before there are currently 23 bodies laying in the royal vault those are princess emilia of united kingdom in 1810 princess augusta to jesus brunswick in 1813 princess charlotte of wales 1817 the stillborn son of princess charlotte 1817 queen charlotte of the united kingdom in 1818 stillborn daughter of ernest augustus king of hanover in 1818 george iii king of the united kingdom in 1820 prince edward duke of kent 1820 prince alfred of great britain a re-burial in 1820 prince octavius of great britain a re-burial in 1820 princess elizabeth of clarence 1821 prince frederick duke of york and albany in 1827 king george iv of the united kingdom in 1830 william iv king of the united kingdom in 1837 princess augusta sophia of the united kingdom in 1840 queen adelaide of the united kingdom in 1849 king george v in 1878 princess mary adelaide of cambridge in 1897. francis duke of tech in 1900 princess frederica of hanover 1926 prince adolphus duke of cambridge a re-burial in 1930 princess augusta re-burial 1930 and finally prince philip the duke of edinburgh consort to queen elizabeth ii in 2021 prince philip the duke of edinburgh joins 24 other royals in the vault on decent george's chapel known as the royal vault before he will move to a side chapel with the queen when she passes prince philip has joined 24 other members of the royal family lying in the vault under saint george's chapel his body will remain there until transferred by lift upstairs to a side chapel when the queen dies then the devoted couple can be laid together in the same final resting place as her father george vi her mother queen elizabeth the queen mother and with the ashes of the queen's sister princess margaret the royal vault is 70 foot long and 28 feet wide with space for 32 bodies along with two sides and 12 in the middle royal vault lies 16 feet down and prince philip the duke of edinburgh's coffin will have been lowered via a pulley system onto a marble slab at the bottom
