good morning I'm Judith latina from Kramer school this is my first grade class room 108 would you say good morning to our visitors and so today the purpose for our filming is for our boys and girls to show you how to do readers workshop in a wonderful first grade way and also to show you what the flow of our guided reading lesson looks like so we're going to go ahead and get started okay boys and girls today we've been busy working on our th sound so I want you to get your mouth ready stick your tongue out and make the sound perfect I'm looking for th words and I I'd like you to clap when you see a word that has our new th sound ready good this then thank you for not clapping her does not have the th sound that great water does not have our th with good then good ha that's a hard word pass sink what is a pass put the picture in your mind of a path and then take a look and see if this is what your path looks like great write the word path on your friends back so that you can learn how to spell the word path erase it great spell path hurrah check it again perfect I'm looking for the word this tell me when to stop ah great I'm looking for the word whiff tell me when to stop ah good that's the word with excellent great job I have a mystery word in my mystery word box and so I've got it I know you guys like this I've got a couple clues and I want you to listen for the clues and then you're going to talk to your friend about the word here we go first clue this word has a th at the end second clue these can fall out when you're six years old the mystery word begins with Talk time blow it release tea great you guys got it I've got a second mystery word here we go second mystery word this time it ends with a voiced th thank you for that you do this lots and lots of times during the day and it begins with this blend per tuck No time top-1 wasn't it I heard kids saying brush and then somebody's partner said oh it can't be brush because brush doesn't have the th ready blow it release oh I heard bathtub I heard brush your teeth that sounds like a whole sentence I didn't hear anybody get the correct one ready to give it a try th at the end BR at the beginning somebody just said it breathe breathe there it is breathe write it on your hands so you don't forget breathe it is a big word time stand you're going to get your wipe off boards your markers and your eraser come back to the carpet I would like you to choose sorr th words to write on your own clear on what to do it's a four-minute job go you better get one oh I see people coming back already fabulous you're writing your choice for th words go perfect back nice one minute what you got a good go you've got two minutes to write them in your literacy notebook I love when kids know what to do perfect quick quick quick literacy notebooks everybody move perfect thank you fast finishers let's get our words quick quick quick one minute good some excellent good I like the work good and thank you for that th practice this week during readers workshop we're working on a really cool skill it's been tough it's been tough I want you to look and think about what our focus skill is when you know it give me a thumbs up oh there it is author's purpose all right open up your schema box think about all the things you learn so far on Monday and Tuesday about author's purpose teach time I heard words like this inform great entertain perfect what was that tough one persuade persuade that's right I have a little YouTube video to share with you guys there's kids in another school that are working on author's purpose let's listen in because picking one thing like mere critters do is they ask themselves what solvers purpose this helps you think about why the author of the story I and I think about why the book was written I think about the book that be with it to persuade inform hmm you guys were right on point with author's purpose weren't you you'll need your author's purpose PI waiting for Julie's bet wonderful so I picked three books today you've read all three books and we're going to talk about the reason the author wrote the book authors purpose so here's our first text it's called snakes I'm going to show you some things in the book that might help you remember about authors purpose oh you notice the label thank you ah ah snake facts wait so good readers asks themselves this question what is the author's purpose why did the author write this book talk to a friend because it was right this table just ended and time move your clip to the correct letter blow it in got it you sure release if you said inform give yourself a paddle on the back that's exactly why the author wrote it so did the author inform you about snakes yes so that's why the author wrote this book it taught us about the backbones of snakes so the author did exactly what he wanted to do here's my next book click clack moo moo cows that type you read it yesterday it was our mentor text click clack moo cows that type tack ty move your clips raise if you said 'i entertain stand now not everybody said e and that's okay because there might be two purposes right okay why'd you say e entertain oh this book made you laugh did it make you laugh we were cracking up yesterday excellent be seated if you said P stand now now you need a reason to support that answer why'd you say P oh the the cows try to change here's mine that's right that's what persuade is give yourselves a pat on the back beautiful be seated wow that was fabulous excellent you guys are learning a lot about author's purpose please stand drop your pipes off at your desk and meet me back on the carpet all set great let's sweet let's start again read them in your mind perfect I'm going to read something I'll do the reading you do the thinking why did the author write this passage here we go today's weather will be cloudy with a chance of snow the high temperature will be 42 degrees the low is 29 degrees there is a possibility of two to four inches of snowfall what is the author's purpose why did the author write this we've never seen this before and you may raise your hand if you think you have an idea to make us change our minds do you agree no neither do white we're not changing our minds anything we're not changing our minds here we're thinking about hmm I just learned how cold it was yeah I just learned that it might snow in forming agree Oh couple people said yes check it out yes that's correct stop all right not too bad let's try this one Frosty the Snowman had a magic hat when the blacktop was put on his head he came to life he could walk and talk and sing what is the author's purpose hands up if you think you have an idea author's purpose entertain why turn around turn around it made us laugh if you agree with Elijah say I agree let's see if he's right perfect great job turn and face this way you guys are doing great with author's purpose mr. Meyers mr. Myers and I are now going to read a book about author's purpose here comes mr. Myers Oh somebody said we can look at both books so mr. Myers and I looking pretty snazzy there Thank You Paula we're going to read our mentor text today and we do have two copies your job is to figure out the author's purpose hey little ant hey little ant written by Phillip and Hannah hosts hey little ant in the clip can you hear me can you talk back see my shoe can you see that well it's gonna wish you flat oh that's a problem please oh please do not squish me change your mind and let me be I'm on my way with a crumb of pie please oh please don't make me die anyone knows that ants can't feel you're so tiny you don't look real I'm so big and you're so small I don't think it'll hurt at all what what what oh my goodness but you are a giant and Giants can't know how it feels to be an ant come down close I think you'll see that you are very much like me are you crazy me like you I have a home and a family - you're just a speck that runs around no one would care if my foot came down Oh big friend you are so wrong my nest mates make me cos I'm strong I take our nest and feed baby ants - I must not die beneath your but my mom says that ants are rude they carry off our picnic food they steal our chips and our bread crumbs - it's good if I squish a crook like you hey I'm not a crook kid read my lips sometimes ants need crumbs and chips one little chip can feed my town so please don't make your shoe come but all my friends squish ants all day squishing ants is a game we they're looking at me they're listening - they all say I should squish you yeah stop bum I can see you're big and strong decide for yourself what's right and if you were me and I were you what would you do and what would you want me to do should that and guess wished should the ant go free it's up to the kid not up to me we'll leave the kid with the raised up shoe what do you think the kid should to talk I think author's purpose its May June ah thanks for noticing mr. Myers in character so I love the thinking signal on Waseem beautiful I can tell he's thinking author's purpose what's the author's purpose why did the author write this book if you said inform stand now nobody who is right excellent the author did not write that book to inform if you said persuade stand out oh I see a stander mm-hmm I see some Sanders remember if you're sitting stay seated all right why are you standing why are you standing somebody jump in why are you standing because the ah the aunt was persuading the boy not to squish you're exactly right great job be seated if you said entertain stand now couple people for entertain all right entertain why funny it was so funny did you laugh at the boy I did did you laugh at the ant were you entertained wonderful excellent job stay standing and everybody please stand when you do your reading you're thinking about you might be thinking persuade authors authors purpose that's the purpose for you to be reading today you already picked your books guided reading groups will be called shortly go thank you for tuning in hope you enjoyed our session
