INSIDE KYLIE COSMETICS PART ONE: THE BEGINNING

her laughter running out she's so mischievous who are you my name is kylie kristen jenner i'm 23 years old my favorite color is pink i was 17 when i launched kylie cosmetics i'm out i'm late i'm gonna be late it feels weird that this is my life now looking back at it though makeup has just been a part of my dna i've loved it for as long as i can remember kendall was riding horses and i was like practicing my makeup at home [Music] when i was younger i had an insecurity with my lips i would go to makeup stores at the mall and just find like lip liner that matched my lip color and just would over line my lips i became obsessed with makeup in general i did my makeup so fast i'm just not feeling myself your lips look amazing really i have temporary lip fillers it's just an insecurity of mine and it's what i wanted to do we all struggle with something and when we struggle with things they kind of spiral out of control from time to time and i think that's what really happened with kylie when we got our show keeping up with the kardashians kylie was 10 years old what made it worse was all the bullying that she was at the other end of on the internet because the one thing that you don't want to shine a bright light on is the one thing that people start talking about being on the internet people will pinpoint every single thing about you and make you realize things that you would never realize in a million years every young person has these insecurities that they deal with and she managed to turn that into something positive not only for her but for other people too makeup has always been a great way of self-expression for me i just knew in my soul that this was what i was supposed to do she found something that made her feel beautiful and that made me really happy i think i was meant to feel that way to then find makeup to give me that boost of confidence i remember everyone online and my fans always wanted to know what i was wearing there's interviews of kim walking the red carpet and the first question they asked her so are you going to tell us what lip color kylie is wearing because everyone wants to know that made me realize how interested people were okay we're going to start here when i had the idea for kylie cosmetics and how determined i was to start my own business i knew that i needed my mom to help me figure this out because i was 17 at the time i remember her saying one day can we have a little meeting and i said yeah you want to have a little meeting she was like 17 16 17. and i said yes she goes i finally figured out what i want to do with my life and i said what what is it what do you want to do i mean this is like a mother's dream that you know somebody's figured it out this young and she said i want to be in the makeup business i want to be in the beauty business and i know exactly what i want my product to be i just never found um like a lip liner or lipstick that matched so i really wanted to make a lip kit where your lip liner and your lipstick they match they're in a kit it's easy for people it's one of those things that only someone who is 17 can come up with it was what do i identify in my life that i need and how can i give that to everyone else who needs it too i said well kylie you have a savings that you've earned from doing keeping up with the kardashians for all these years and i said you're going to have to use your own money if you really want to make this work because that's going to be your motivation and your drive and then i actually met with megan who still works on our team today i was so impressed with how specific she was how she knew exactly what she wanted and we're like duh the ivy but yeah it's simple but that's genius and i've been in the industry for a long time and like wait why didn't we think of that this was her idea she launched these lip kits based off a gap in the market that she found and an interest in makeup and i said okay well you better pick three colors that you really really love because this is either gonna be a huge hit or you're gonna have loads of lip kits for the rest of your life and in your garage and i said well when are we gonna start you know making our advertising campaign she goes oh no you know i'm gonna do it my way i said what's your way i didn't even look at what these other big brands were doing for the last 50 years i just knew my fans and i knew my generation and what i like to see as a consumer i was used to traditional media campaigns and a traditional way of launching a brand i was a little nervous to be honest and i said what if it's not successful she goes i know what you know i know exactly what i'm doing it was very simple was connecting one-on-one with her fans with her customers and being able to communicate with them directly when i first launched my lip kit i took a picture and posted on instagram before it launched she never held back on letting you into her life she you know has the ability to connect with people on such a real level that they feel like they know her i mean she really had this amazing relationship with the people that followed her i planned a launch event to try to sell all these lip kits that i got and at the time i thought it was so many lip kits three shades and 15 000 units in total that's actually a lot quite honestly you know in comparison to what would an industry stand to be we all got on the website at the same time and it wouldn't load and i thought the site crashed oh my god no one managed to buy anything because the site crashed watching the site go up and then just watching everything i mean it was gone something was really wrong with the platform oh my goodness this whole thing is just crashed and then i get a phone call and they said oh no we sold out of everything in less than a minute this is just so excited kylie jenner released her lipstick at 9 00 a.m this morning and the kids sold out in just a matter of minutes she just announced it on social media my lip kits are up and within seconds it was gone and i was like what we should have ordered more lip kits oh no it started off as lip kit by kylie then when i realized after the first launch that it could be something that i've always dreamed about a real cosmetics line then i changed it to the cosmetics i remember talking to chris after that saying you need to scale this like there's something here i've never seen something like this before after that day we realized that we were onto something [Music] you

Why is her suit so large

Instead of chasing the hype her brand had in 2016, she should put out products people actually want to use, and listen to the few makeup fans she has left. We don't need another neutral makeup palette with two or three pops of color... I also don't really use liquid lipstick anymore, and the hype for that is dead, but she's relaunching them? Her brand isn't innovative or creative, and it's priced way too high to be so mediocre. I got 10 free Kylie Kosmetics items in two Ulta orders, and none of the products wowed me. I ended up putting 8 of them in my donate pile lol.

Here’s the thing, when the 3 older sisters did that “Khroma” line, they had a kit that had a pencil with liner on one end, lipstick on the other end, and a matching gloss. (I know because I had one and it was the nicest nude ever) So I really don’t think the idea is as original as she likes to claim- they just changed the gloss to a matte liquid lip.

Oh wow! I haven’t watched KUWTK in a long time. It’s interesting to see how her filler looks on her face when she moves/talks.

“Starting from the beginning” feels very - remember six years ago when the brand was a big deal??

Thoughts:

1) WE KNOW! I know about the insecurity, I know about the units, I know about “her own” money, I know about the website crashing. I know they story already. This is why I am losing interest in the fam because they refuse to open up and will only give us the same old sanitized overproduced bullshit. Like come on. There was NOTHING else about the beginning you want highlight? Like she could even talk about how she didn’t know how formulation worked, how she didn’t set out to make money, who the key players were and what they did, she could’ve spoken about so much. 2) she is going to sell this as something she did for the betterment of the brand rather than the lawsuit. Which I understand but I feel like the people buying KC won’t know that and it feels a little like false advertising. 3) I get the strong feeling she knows exactly how people feel and how we are getting bored of her otherwise this series wouldn’t be happening. Don’t get me wrong she is going to spin this as though this is such a huge business and she’s so successful. But I think she knows that unless she shares something that makes her look interesting (I.e leading the video with storm’s cuteness) this business is going to continue tanking.

Overall- 2.6/5 I am still bored but happy to have something to look at from Kylie that isn’t just sexy photos

Edit: ALSO! The fact that the “working in the office b-roll” was from that one YouTube video where she went into the office was extremely interesting considering the assumption that no one actually works in that office

Y’all remember in like 2016 when everyone thought they can get this transformation by over lining lips? I remember three of us in line at Mac trying to buy whirl and it was sold out.
