[Music] well we're here at the kingston penitentiary this is going to be a last little tour before we head back apparently they recently renovated it the tour is going to be about 90 minutes so we'll show you some highlights the kingston pen first opened its doors on june 1st 1835 and finally closed the door september 30th 2013. they say it was closed due to political agenda everybody was being moved over to milhaven [Music] all right let's head in and check this out [Music] super solid in 1913 the women inmates moved into building a3 the first separate facility for women in canada known as the female department of the kingston penitentiary [Music] the buildings you see in front of us make up the main cell block it is directly associated with the prison riots of 1932 1954 and 1971 which led to major changes in the penal code practice the main cell blocks construction the subsequent economic benefits and the resulting influx of inmates and personnel had a significant impact on kingston [Music] [Music] when an inmate had contributed one of the many rules and regulations they were sent to the hole inside kingston pen and they make any sentence to a maximum of 30 days in one single stretch one person at a time inside not much room at least you get some fresh air and some sun [Music] check out what this is karma and justice vengeance is mine the walls inside a solitary confinement they all had hard work lots of interesting things written [Music] we're on our way to the central cell block where during the riot of 1971 500 inmates held six guards hostage and tore the 136 year old prison apart in the dome inmates held a kangaroo court for undesirables and here 11 prisoners were tied to plywood chairs and beaten while rioters watched from above [Music] where are you [Music] [Applause] here we're heading into the shops building which housed the various trades operated by core can limited the year kingston penn closed 2013. prisoners were paid seven dollars per day to work in the canvas shop metal shop and woodworking shop products made in these shops were sold to both the public and the federal government [Applause] [Music] now we're making our way to the recreation yard here the fence you see allowed the prison to manage outdoor time for the general population by splitting them into two groups they had special turnstiles you see here to facilitate secure re-entry into the cell block murals in this indoor basketball court they depict heaven and hell joshua saw a basketball in this room here and he wanted to go shoot some hoops in the distance you see the exterior of the main dome [Applause] good luck trying to scale that wall [Applause] [Music] private family visits pfvs allow inmates and their families to spend time together these visits help inmates keep and strengthen family and community ties pfvs can take place for up to 72 hours every two months unless otherwise specified in an institution's standing order in a closed visit there is a physical barrier between you and the inmate you are visiting closed visits are not regular visits they usually occur after a threat risk assessment is completed due to either suspicions or concerns for the safety and security of the institution i didn't believe a man existed who could not be stopped by a slug from a stop by a slug from a stop by a slug
