hello welcome back to our channel! If you're new  here, I'm Shaneen, this is Adrian and we live in   the Japanese countryside the number one most like  asked question when people realize that we live   in Japan in terms of like daily life is what is  the grocery shopping like what is the food like   so today we are going to take you on a tour of  our local supermarket and show you what a Japanese   grocery store looks like. So we're going to one of  the only grocery stores in the city that we live   in, there's actually two, but there's one called  Happy Town or Polka that is really close to us   it's a little bit smaller but we're gonna be going  there. I love polka so it's on the it's on the way   between me and my route to school so i'm in there  about every day grabbing something it's kind of   how you do Japanese groceries it's hard to do them  all in one go the uh the carts are even tiny so we   usually come in and out three or four times a week  it's rarely just like one big grocery shop. Look at   the size of the carts here! and then your basket  just fits perfectly like this and it's so small. So they have just loads of fried and  pre-cooked meals that you can come   and just grab just endless look there's salmon  uh some of our favorite torikatsu chicken katsu   over here you have pre-made kind of bento meals oh  some tempura 480 yen oh here's a classic bento box   you can get it for about 480 yen which is  like five dollars canadian great price and   if you make your way over here you've got your  onigiri section not a lot of stock at the moment spaghetti and all the way over here you have sushi i sometimes get these for  lunch these are really good   actually i get this one for lunch this is great  oh that does look good salmon with some mayo and   onion on top it's really good i love this nice so  this is how they do bread here so yeah you just   buy it by slices so like this is four slices five  slices and it's all the same size but it's just   like how thick of the slice that you're gonna get  so the smallest size you can get is four slices   and then the thinnest slices you  can get is ten and it is 138 yen   we're gonna get some english muffins so these are  the english muffins we usually get they're 188 yen   so these are little pre-made sandwiches that  have different stuff in the middle this one has   pudding this one has matcha this one apparently  has noodles in the middle like dude does it   actually have this in the middle i do not know but  they're just like pre-made sandwiches and then you   have your regular like egg and stuff like that of  course you can't go far without finding an pen man honey jams something that might be harder to find  is peanut butter but you can usually find it at   some supermarkets you can get a squeezable  corn and mayo tuna and mayo i've never actually   used this but i mean i feel like it actually i  feel like the tuna nail one wouldn't be that bad   so this is the cheese section so this is sour  cream it's 258 yen for a tiny little thing   and then we also need you just straight up  cheese too right i actually really i was   surprised i wasn't expecting there to be much  good cheese here that's what i've been told   but i actually really like this shredded cheese  right here yeah we'll get one of these 338 here like i wonder if these are any good yeah they  have some dessert cheese cheese spreadable cheese   i think that's quite expensive i  don't i don't have blue cheese so yeah   natural cheese set for 780 and that is not a lot  of cheese so they have a lot of pre-made coffees   and so they're just so easy to grab and  drink in the morning when you're in a rush   but here we have the milk so we usually get a  small one like this for to use as our coffee   creamer so it's 198 yen for half a liter we  usually get the ohio milk which means good morning   and it's 188 yen nice so the eggs come in  tens and they're really good here they're   super high quality and we really like them so we  usually end up getting 20 at a time because we   just go through a lot of eggs they don't have  much of a cereal section at least at this one   i usually grab this for my cereal  these are 258 yen for hash browns   striking off the list so this whole section  here is all like microwavable easy meals   kind of more for like bentos because everything  comes in just like a pack of sticks and then   you just break off a little piece of it and it's  supposed to be easy for like making bento boxes   um we've tried out a few of them and  they're yeah we don't really eat them i'm gonna pick up some nice edamame we're  gonna be making a salmon poke bowl later   the ice cream in japan is amazing and they  they go hard on it so this is all ice creams and it just it's honestly like a  whole aisle itself of just ice cream   actually it keeps going all the way around this  is mochi filled with ice cream these are so good   there's just like a little pack of two it's 98 yen   nice yeah you can get some tiny pizzas  here they fit in our tiny little microwave   oven you're looking at about 298 yen and our place  sometimes has these stickers here so that five i   can't read uh the other kanji but it means fifty  percent off all right we got the wiener section   uh they love absolutely love sausage or wieners  so this is a pack of they're like really tiny   tiny wieners 270 again i haven't tried them  yet but yeah oh and then this is their bacon   which to all the bacon lovers out there it just  wouldn't do it for you some ham this is a soy meat   so if you're vegetarian it's hard when you're  eating out but when you're grocery shopping   there's stuff like this so this is like a soy  meat tankatsu um these are soy little meatballs   i mean there's not a lot but there's at  least not a soy chip or is that just chicken   no no it's just that's just chicken oh yeah they  have these chickens and they come in bags we've   never gotten one we have no idea the quality  of it but they don't look that appetizing no   all right we're gonna go get some chicken this one  yeah that looks pretty good yeah that's probably   what we need i mean it's great it's fresh and  uh it's very affordable piles now some fish   i bought this one time so it's uh so and they were terrible they were okay i  don't want to say terrible but alarmingly scary this is sashimi style salmon it's so good really  high quality so we usually we're making a poke   bowl tonight so we're gonna get this one so  here we have the drank section pocari sweat   and aquarius are a sports drink that are supposed  to rejuvenate electrolytes and whatnot oh yes in   japan they love tea tea all day every day just  cold tea hot tea it doesn't matter next you have   your individual coffees huge fan honestly georgia  cafe au lait so good i'm also a huge craft boss   fan uh would recommend trying it out we have some  juices truthfully have never tried calpis soda   but it i have it's actually it's actually really  good it looks like trash but it's actually good   and a questionable name calpis soda we have some  energy drinks here and then this is kind of your   pop selection not much so there's a mattia cider  which is a cider type canada represent right there   canada dry and of course can't go anywhere without  seeing coke all right next we're here in the   alcohol section let's just get a brief kind  of look at some of the prices so wine here   can range anywhere from hundred yen fourteen  dollars you can get wines as cheap as five   dollars for a whole 750 ish milliliter bottle and  this is a tiny grocery store but you get quite   quite a few options they're not the greatest  ones we've tried and sampled some of them   but you can even get wine such as yellowtail  here and so then on the other side we have beer   as well as chuhai which so if you don't know  what a chu hi is it's basically a sake high   ball so i am a huge fan of these bad boys  so you can get a 500 milliliter nine percent   chew high for only 150 yen which is just  an outrageously good deal and i love the   taste it's such a strong lemon there's uh  so many different flavors too okay only   only in japan can you get four liters of alcohol  for 30 dollars like look how scary this is   good oh my gosh it's just like in a plastic  bottle yeah there's more on this side sake sake they love whiskey here too so they love these easy blend coffees  that you can just add hot water to all   individually packed of course and we got some  matcha here okay we're in the snacks aisle   just show some of our favorites maybe these are 108 yen these are my favorites they're  just like veggie straws i guess these are good too   a little corn ring oh sorry potato rings   these are really good these are cheese  umaibos they're kind of like cheesies they're 98 yen there's a quick brows of the candy section   all small packaged none really higher than 200 yen  they have a small little chocolate section here we really like these these are good  these are good we get those a lot   we don't really need any right now but  oh baby we're in the cup noodle section kind of looking at these prices i really  like this brand i truly don't know what the   kanji is so i don't know what it's called  but uh it's equity something's a goodie   we need tomato juice for a lentil tortilla soup  that we're making so we're just gonna get this one you need a coconut milk so it's 328 yen which  is kind of expensive but yeah i think it's more   like a specialty item so it's a bit pricier and  then to our left i have this is like honestly my   favorite things they have these pre-made curries  that all you have to do is heat them up we're   going to get a couple for some fast meals for  the week we really like this butter chicken one   so should we get two yeah let's get two  we also need some canned tomatoes 98 yen cutting down the sauces some dressings on the right cool towers of soy sauce so 300  yen for massive amount of soy sauce   one of my favorites okonomiyaki sauce used for  the one and only okonomiyaki pancake so one thing   that that's expensive here is like this is like  10 beans and it's 118 yen so you can't just buy   like a can of beans or anything they're all  pretty expensive so that's one thing that's   a little different so this is the seaweed that  we usually get it's 258 yen and it's really good some tofu in their prices about 68 yen for tofu that's pretty dang good  they have an aisle of usual cleaners and bathroom   necessities okay we're heading  into the veggie section what do we need today 298 yet not bad we just  activated the second cart mode 128 yen bean sprouts or moyashi are very  cheap here 28 yen for a pretty good amount so we're getting cucumber how many do you think  like three yeah i think there are 60 again   and we need bananas pop bananas nice so they're a  bit smaller and there's five of them it's 258 yen and we're getting some  broccoli for 198 yen a piece so usually we wouldn't get one of these it's  literally like two dollars for one lime but we're   making a lentil soup and we really need it so so  there's like a local section in our supermarket so   we're getting green onions from there sometimes  the fruit here gets outrageous so one melon 3980 yen forty dollars for this melon  thirty dollars for a small size watermelon   wow oh my look at what is this this  is forty dollars they look like little   mini orange things does anyone know this is  this is forty dollars for this little pack yeah and they look like the same thing so i don't  know why they're so expensive might just be a gift   box so we're getting some mekong or some oranges  they're usually really cheap because we they grow   a lot in this area so we're getting a big bag  for 498 yes so apples are really expensive here   i love apples though so every once in a while  i'll splurge and get one but i'll usually get   like one of these almost like yeah it's like  three dollars from one apple but it's massive   so it's like two snacks so yeah that's true yeah  so we'll just get one actually i want this one this one looks a little better okay so i think we're all done  so we're just gonna go pay so you just put your basket on  the counter and then they scan   the items and reload them  into a new basket for you you pay using the machine and then you take your  basket to a bagging counter where you bag it   yourself okay so we just got back home and all of  those groceries the bill total was like 10 388 yen   so that is this much canadian and other currencies  as you can see the plastic packaging in japan is   out of control like everything is individually  packaged even bananas which don't need to be   in any plastic are individually wrapped so we  try to get things as much as we can um without   plastic but it is really really difficult here the  plastic is is insane so it's kind of hard to tell   price wise like compared to back at home because  everything here it feels like it's just smaller   like it's in smaller sizes so in terms of price  i feel like it's somewhat similar obviously like   the fruit and veggies and stuff like that  is kind of outrageous and there's lots of   import stores like we buy all of our coffee and  find like lentils and beans and stuff like that   chickpeas which we can't ever find in the grocery  store we go to a place called Kaldi coffee farm   get our coffee there and all of that stuff so you  just kind of have to search and we can find pretty   much anything so also if there's anything that  you can recommend to us in the grocery stores that   we don't know about and you think is a hidden  gem please let us know because we're still new   still figuring out what to do with the  vegetables... thanks so much for watching   this video feel free to like and subscribe  and we'll see you next week okay bye bye yes
