do you want to get more horsepower out of your a10 ford tractor my name is Rachel Kendall in this video I'll show you how you can easily and affordably get more horsepower out of your a 10-9 and/or 2n 4 tractor whether you want to take your tractor to a tractor pull and be competitive or you just want to use your tractor in the yard and have more power these tips will really help you out now you can increase the horsepower of your tractor by making adjustments to the carburetor the distributor and the governor of course there's other ways to make improvements to your horsepower but those are the three I'm going to show you in this video the first one we're going to show you is how to turn off your governor your governor has a set screw here which you can loosen up and that will increase the RPMs on your tractor so you can move that up just about one turn and then you tighten it up with the jam nut in the back like that once you have it tight then you can test it on the dyno and your rpms will increase with this test I'll show you the RPM gauge normally this tractor would run at about twenty two hundred rpms two thousand or twenty two hundred and start this tractor up there you saw that the RPM scheme passed the gauge which is really good if your attractor is not a late-model a10 and it's not equipped with a tank in the - you could use a handheld gauge like this one this hooks up into the PTO you can see the back of it there then you'd be able to test your rpms next we will show you how to fine-tune the carburetor now when you rebuild a carburetor and put it on your tractor you'd normally start with your main jet at two and a half turns out that's a great place to start but then you can start off the tractor and fine tune it to get a little bit more horsepower by the main jet on your carburetor so right now I have that two and a half turn set out when the tractor starts up I'm going to just turn this main jet ever so slightly you don't want to overdo it because you'll see a difference in the way that the tractor runs and the reaction that happens on the dyno so my sister's on the tractor she's going to start it up my dad's at the dyno and will show you how you can get that increase through your main jet now it's important to note that you don't give it too much you still want your tractor to burn clean don't have black smoke coming out to your exhaust just a little bit on the main jet does a lot of difference go ahead Hannah turn it on the pco2 turn on the dyno this is going to rev it up now we want it to be at 540 under load [Music] and [Music] there you could see the increase in the horsepower on the dyno and see that just a little bit of turning on the main jet will really make a difference in your horsepower the biggest difference however is going to be shown in the distributor in order to make an adjustment to your distributor you'll need to loosen up the bolt down here that hold your distributor in place once it's loosened up you'll see that you can move your distributor a little bit if you move it clockwise towards the engine black you'll be advancing it or towards the radiator you would be moving it so you can make those adjustments to your distributor a little bit at a time makes a big difference listen to the tractor as it runs you'll see the difference that it makes on the dyno and be able to make this adjustment on your own tractor go ahead and start your up Hanna okay so we got there pretty quickly and you can play with it back and forth it's important that once you advance your distributor you don't want to advance it too much that it's too heavy of a load and then your tractor won't start on its own so we're going to test that before we tighten up our distributor in that position so he is going to start it just at an idle make sure they will start on its own that it runs smooth at idle it's good the idle all the way down okay give it a little bit of gas but it runs really good go ahead turn it off thank you okay this one's really good where it's at in this position and you can do a lot of time tuning to your distributor and you'll see a big increase once you have that in the position that you want it go ahead and tighten it up so it stays for our final horsepower reading we're going to start the tractor up read the gauges and convert that to horsepower to see how much horsepower we've gained go ahead Hannah [Applause] [Music] [Applause] so we were reading on the gauge 450 pounds of pressure so if we put our ruler right there then this will fall right at the 540 mark that puts us at about 32 horsepower is a significant gain and horsepower my tractor has had some modifications to the engine so if you have a stock engine you likely wouldn't see that much increase in power but you definitely will see a horsepower increase by fine-tuning your carburetor your governor and your distributor so go ahead and make those changes to your tractor you'll love the improvements that you see
