We all love football because it’s the beautiful game, but sometimes, when players choose to be unsportsmanlike, that beauty gets exchanged for drama. Let’s now take a look at 20 incidents where footballers showed 0 sportsmanship. We’ll start with this recent one from Mbappe. The Frenchman stopped running and pulled out of the counter-attack because Vitinha refused to pass the ball to him when he asked for it. And to make matters worse, if he had continued his run, he would have been able to get to the end of the ball and get a goal for the team. That was very childish and unsportsmanlike from Mbappe. And he’s actually not the only PSG superstar guilty of something of this nature. Neymar, too, has shown 0 sportsmanship, but in his case, he did it to an opponent, not his own teammates. This happened during the pandemic season in a game between PSG and Lille. Neymar got fouled by Tiago Djallo, and the Brazilian wasn’t happy about that at all, so he shoved him. That shove earned him his second yellow of the game, and Djallo also got a sending off for some words said to Neymar. Now, with both of them walking down the tunnel, the PSG number 10 tried to bury the hatchet, but the defender wasn’t really interested in that, so guess what! Neymar shoved him yet again, and he looked like he was really ready to start a fight this time if not for the intervention of the staff. Anyway, since we’ve talked about two of that PSG front 3 already already, let us just complete the list by including Messi. But in his case, it was Messi who was on the receiving end of the lack of sportsmanship. This was back when he was at Barcelona. In one of those feisty Catalan derbies, Pau Lopez, Espanyol’s goalkeeper at the time, deliberately stepped on Messi but acted like he didn’t know. That could have caused a very damaging injury to the Argentine, but the goalie managed to go scott free for his crimes. But one person who definitely didn’t go scott free was Pepe, he deservedly got sent off for this. We know Pepe is naturally aggressive, but the Portuguese really went overboard with this one, quite literally kicking a man while he was down. Now, this next one is not as bad, but it’s definitely similar. We’re talking about when Erik Lamela stylishly stepped on Fabregas’ fingers in one of those heated London derbies. That must have hurt so bad. Lamela, come on! Where’s your spirit of sportsmanship? Well, that’s a question we could also ask Suarez because it seemed like the man never knew the first thing about sportsmanship in his younger days. What didn’t Suarez do? There were the biting incidents. Three of them actually. You definitely remember the one on Ivanovic and the one on Chiellini, but before those 2, the legendary striker was guilty of biting a PSV player back in 2010 when he was at Ajax. Well, guess you can say Suarez is a big fish, and these are just some of his shark tales. Now, in that same year, 2010, Suarez also did something else, something that will be very difficult for anyone to ever forget, Ghanaians especially. Now, we’ll be very honest with you, the jury is still out on this one. Ghanaians surely still curse Suarez and say that intentionally clearing the ball from the goal line in the 120th minute was unsportsmanlike, and that’s the only reason this one is on the list today. But left to us, it was just part of the game. He did whatever he could to stop the goal and got duly punished for it. What do you think about it, though? Let us know in the comments. Anyway, while that might be debatable, this one sure isn’t. The whole racism shebang between him and Evra while he was still at Liverpool was definitely unsportsmanlike. Suarez was accused of using racist language towards Evra, and Evra gave a big reaction. Because of that, in their next game, Suarez refused to shake Evra’s hand before kickoff. Evra reacted right there, but there was an even bigger reaction to come. At the end of the game, after Man United had defeated Liverpool, Evra went directly in front of Suarez to applaud the fans and celebrate the victory. The match officials and other players had to quickly intervene so it didn’t lead to something even bigger. Suarez was a very polarizing figure during his heyday. Great and loved by many, but also a villain in the books of many others. And you know who else is just like that? Cristiano Ronaldo. He surely has one of the largest fan bases football has ever seen, but he’s also a villain in many people’s books, and this is one of the reasons. Remember that Portugal-Switzerland game at the World Cup when Ronaldo was dropped to the bench? The team captain really showed 0 sportsmanship at the end of that game. Portugal were able to secure their most convincing win of the entire tournament without their all-time top scorer, and it appeared that CR7 was not very happy about that. While the entire team was celebrating advancement into the quarter-final, Ronaldo just walked straight down the tunnel. That’s bad sportsmanship for any player, but even worse for the team captain. But surely, that cannot be worse than giving the finger to your own fans, can it? Fabricio was so mad at his own fans for booing and whistling at him all game, so when he got fed up, he just stopped, turned to them, and gave them the middle finger. He was immediately sent off for that while his teammates, including Alisson, tried to apologize to the crowd on his behalf. After seeing red, Fabricio became even more irate. He took off his jersey and wanted to throw it to the ground so badly, but his teammates stopped him. While he was walking down the tunnel, he made some more hand gestures towards the crowd. Fabricio was suspended by the club, and he ended up leaving that same year. There was surely no coming back from that. Speaking of comebacks, though, it reminds us of how Simeone’s 0 sportsmanship moment was punished weeks later with an iconic comeback. When Atletico Madrid took a 2-nil lead against Juventus in the first leg of a Champions League round of 16 game, he got too excited and seemed to forget that they still had a second leg to play, so he performed a very disrespectful and provocative celebration. Well, in the second leg, Ronaldo made sure the Spaniard paid for his disrespect. The Portuguese scored 3 goals to knock Simeone and his men out. Oh, and trust Ronaldo to mock the Atletico boss by mimicking the celebration. Well, since we’re talking about coaches already, let’s also mention this one from Jose Mourinho. We all know how the Portuguese gaffer can be, but he surely took it overboard when he called Eva Carneiro a daughter of a whore simply for doing her job. He didn’t want her running into the pitch because of time, but she did, and he lashed out. An absolutely horrible thing to say to anybody anywhere; words do hurt. But you know what hurts more than that? Getting spat on. Could there be anything more insulting? But well, Douglas Costa was guilty of doing this to an opponent during a Serie A match back when he was at Juventus. He spat on Federico di Francesco’s face, and boy, he really handled it better than most would have. The Brazilian only got a yellow that day, but upon review, he was then handed a 4-game ban. Well-deserved. From the Serie A, let’s now move to the Premier League where we see David Luiz over-exaggerate the impact from Rafael and smiling as the Man United player was given his marching orders. That’s definitely not sportsmanlike. And that bit of playacting reminds us of the Euros when Immobile went down in the box trying to buy a penalty even though there was no contact on him. His theatrics were immediately exposed when his side scored seconds after. He immediately got up to his feet and joined his teammates in celebrating. Yet again, 0 sportsmanship there. Well, still in the Premier League, Amartey was definitely unsportsmanlike when he swung his arm at Kevin De Bruyne in a game between Leicester City and Man City. But what made matters worse and, frankly, funnier was that after the game, Leicester City’s official account made a TikTok mocking De Bruyne for what they believe was playacting from the midfielder. Considering Amartey actually hit him, you have to say that’s a 0 sportsmanship moment from the Ghanaian and peak shithousery from the club’s social media handler. Let’s now move to Cristiano Ronaldo once again. This one happened in 2021 when United were on the end of a 5-nil thumping from Liverpool at Old Trafford. Towards the end of the game, Cristiano Ronaldo took out his frustration on Curtis Jones. He first fouled the midfielder and then went on to kick him when he was on the ground. That showed a gross lack of sportsmanship, and it’s something we definitely didn’t expect from Ronaldo. However, we can’t exactly say we didn’t expect this next incident from Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The Swede, on his way to scoring a goal, stamped on Rafael van der Vaart, and that was definitely unsportsmanlike. But considering Zlatan said he’d snap van der Vaart in two, it’s not very surprising, is it? Now, what we have shown you today has been players showing 0 sportsmanship, so let’s quickly show you one where a whole team was guilty of this. Apart from the final itself, the most heated game at the 2022 World Cup was definitely the quarter-final clash between Argentina and the Netherlands. It had literally everything, and when it got to penalties, we all knew that whoever would come out victorious would really savor their hard-fought victory. Of course, it was Argentina who won, but they were not so sportsmanlike with their victory. They celebrated in the faces of the Dutchmen after Lautaro converted the winning penalty, and that actually wasn’t the best sight to behold. Anyway, we’ll end this with a 0 sportsmanship moment which you can say is a little forgivable. Out of frustration, Dru Yearwood kicked the ball into the stands, but unfortunately for him, it hit some young fans. Immediately he realized this, Yearwood climbed up the stands to apologize, but he wasn’t given the opportunity to. He then got down, received his card with grace and apologized again. For that display after what he did, would you have forgiven Dru Yearwood for his lack of sportsmanship? Let us know in the comments. Also, let us know what moments in this video were the worst.
