I watched the whole video, and I can just say the description says it all:
It boils down to the usual arguments we see here constantly, whether ACVI is soulslike or not, it's really nothing new.
My opinion stays the same, Armored Core VI is a pureblood Armored Core game, with the most refined combat system we've ever seen, and with a much better design and variety of enemies than was possible before. Rather than having enemies just move and shoot with very slight variation, they now have proper movesets and attacks that will give VI a variety of encounters unheard of.
Armored Core V and Verdict Day already had bosses with movesets you had to observe and react to, although the execution wasn't really the smoothest in my opinion, so what we see in VI is essentially going to be an evolution of that; it's not just an element borrowed from Souls games, we're simply moving forward in terms of design.
And the hardlock discussion is just as silly as it's always been - we don't know how the FCS will work in VI and how it will interact with soft and hard locks alike, how quickturning will effectively work, if and how it will be breakable, there is too much we don't know. Expressing concerns is fine, but jumping to conclusions that ACVI will play like a souls is overreacting. And he hammers down this idea that the game is made to appeal to souls fans and play like souls, and I could not disagree more.
A souls-y playstyle will definitely be available to the player, yes, and the two builds showcased in the gameplay video are definitely more towards that, but that's it: a choice of playstyle. Even the gameplay trailer showed builds that have nothing to do with it, mainly the quad and tank ACs.
"The fact of the matter is this lowers the skill ceiling of the game"
I agree with most of the video and think it's a good analysis of the changes to the mechanics and the shift in the game design philosophy that they were built out of (although my opinion is that it's a good thing), but this is just not something you can state authoritatively in the slightest. The skill ceiling may be centered around a different set of tasks, a different toolkit of mechanics and gameplay systems, but the idea that it's dumbing them down just because it's not exactly the same as it was in previous AC games is ridiculous, especially with the level of depth available in all the new combat mechanics that we've already seen.
Also, tangentially related but I've seen it a lot, I wonder why the instant reaction to hearing that they're introducing some Souls-like mechanics to Armored Core for so many people was that they were making it more "casual". Like, what, because Souls is popular? Because if there's one series of games that I don't exactly associate with being super easy it's Dark Souls.
Five seconds in and he's already talking about how people are being called gatekeepers just because they have a different opinion. I just don't agree. People are being called gatekeepers because they go apeshit if you even say the word dark souls and say that adding souls elements which really isn't even what's happening some how makes the game "casual." Whatever that means.
Here's genuinely a good tip. If you want people to listen to your arguement. Don't actively insult them to their face IN the arguement.
It's basically the same talking points that's been said to death at this point. I get having concerns but jumping to this conclusion that it's suddenly a souls game is just ridiculous.
FromSoftware has said that this isn't a soulslike nor were they trying to make it into one. They simply took things they learned and applied it to this game. It's even more mind boggling that people are jumping to all these conclusions off of 4 minutes of HUD-less gameplay.
I personally don't get boss battle complaint when boss battles in the old games for the most part were pretty plain. I dont see what the issue is if they're trying to make them have more moves than just spamming missiles and laser cannons.
Not going to watch it because I don't really care what anyone thinks at this point. The only thing that will matter is how it feels when we get our hands on it. All the bitching about speculation is just to get views, and I couldn't care less.
This whole thing has been blown massively out of proportion. AC6 is very obviously still Armored Core in all of the ways that matter. You custom-build a personalized machine and come up with new builds to tackle a series of challenges that teach you over time how to perfect your mech for the next violently crunchy robot battle. Is that not enough for you guys anymore?
If anything, this 'discourse' is making a clear distinction between fans of Fromsoft and people who only like a handful of their games. I'm reminded of the "fromsoft freak" at the end of Ratatoskr's most recent video who claims to be a huge Fromsoft fan, but has only "dabbled" in Armored Core and believes Armored Core needs to be "made more like a Fromsoft game." Let the pure insanity of that sentence sink in. Can we please not be like that guy either? When was the last time Fromsoft made a bad game? Let them cook. They've had more than a decade to perfect this formula, lets see how it works out. I for one have faith they'll deliver a great game that revives the mecha genre.
I really agree with his opinions on this.
Rather than saying anything being added is a "souls like," I would say that ACVI looks like it is leaning a lot heavier into the action aspect of the game. The series used to keep a bit of a sim feel to it. It wasn't as actiony as ZoE, but it wasn't full sim like MechWarrior. I think it used to hold a very awesome middle point. This will be a game as different as 3rd Gen to 4th Gen to 5th Gen. Not saying it will be a bad game by any means, but if it does go a lot more action, it won't be as much of an Armored Core game to me.
They are bringing a lot of it in line with modern gaming sensibilities and making it a lot more accessible. Not saying it'll be easy by any measure. Just more appealing and digestible for the majority of the population. Of course this will increase sales, and increase popularity. But maybe not my enjoyment of it.
We will have to see what things turn out to be, and I am hoping to see that things aren't as changed fundamentally as I think they may end up being.
If there is implemented a full, hard, lock to make melee more integral, I think they could have done without it and just added additional aim assist for the melee moves. But we'll see how this plays out on release/demo.
There being a healing item, and it being instant, I wish they had instead thought of a way to implement it where it had a cost, other than possibly monetary, which we have no confirmation of yet. I understand the game takes a lot of suspension of belief already, but patching up armor in an instant is a bit further than I can muster for an AC game. Especially as they felt a bit more grounded compared to a lot of other mech action games.
Again, just how I feel. I will probably end up enjoying this game , but I don't think I'll enjoy it anywhere near as much as I do other AC titles. And that will be something I'll have to live with.
yea yea. And I am still salty that CP2077 doesn't have third person cutscenes. We just gotta suck it up.
I think above average gaming has genuinely bad opinions of the armored core series.
I've watched the other videos on the channel relating to Armored Core, I disagree with almost everything that the content creator has to say. Dislikes and downvotrs from me 🤷
