[Music] hi everyone its Christina from the DIY mommy con and today I want to show you how to build a bench from kitchen cabinets I haven't shared it yet here but I have charted on my blog that we are converting our kitchen dining space to a more cozy more casual breakfast nook the reason we're doing this is because you might remember last year we converted our front formal sitting room into a dining room so seemed really redundant to have two spaces that were kind of a semi formal that both had large rectangular dining tables so we decided to convert our kitchen dining area to a really cozy breakfast nook featuring a round table and a built-in bench I've seen a few people do this on Pinterest and online elsewhere where they built a built-in window seat or a built-in bench from kitchen cabinets specifically the ones that go above your refrigerator so I wanted to give this a try and today I want to show you how I did that let me share with you how I made a bench for our kitchen out of kitchen cabinets for starters I purchased two over the fridge cabinets from Ikea we use IKEA in our own kitchen and I really love how easy these are to put together and how cost effective they are so I purchased two of the 30-inch wide by 15 inch high over the fridge cabinets this 15 inch height is perfect because you only have to add a few inches to make it be standard vent height or chair height which is around 18 inches I got the 30 inch width because two of them was a really nice fit on this wall in our soon-to-be breakfast nook then I made a base for the cabinets with some simple two by fours I just made sure that I was creating a box that was the same width and the same length as my two cabinets put together I just cut the pieces with our miter saw and it also created two braces to go with in this frame vertically so that everything was a nice and sturdy and then my husband used his large nail gun to put everything together honestly was the was the only thing that I had him help me with for this DIY because I really hate that big nailed in after we built the base a friend and I moved those kitchen cabinets on top of the base just like this just to make sure that they fit and they did which was fantastic and then I screwed them together just in the middle here to make sure that they weren't shifting back and forth and then nailed them to my 2x4 base with this finishing nail gun after that I found some trim that was the same height as my two by fours so about three and a half inches high and I cut that and mitered the corners so that I could put that on top of my two by fours to create a nice finished at base a for this cabinet I really like how this turned out it just made the bottom of the cabinet look nice and finished I love how the mitered corners look on this bench and after I nailed everything in place with my finishing nail gun I just cocked all of the seams and the nail holes and painted it white with a full brush then I put the doors on I love how this bench is going to offer us lots of storage and then I purchased a piece of foam that was 2 inches high by I've feet wide from Amazon I'll leave a link to that in the description box below I used some leftover indoor/outdoor fabric and that we had from our camper and I cut two pieces of that that were half an inch of bigger all the way around then my piece of foam then I cut some pieces to go around the edges of my foam that wore 3 inches high so 2 inches plus 2 half-inch seam allowances and then after I cut all those pieces I just sewed my gusset section here together to make sure that it would wrap all the way around my bench seat cover and then I sewed that to the big pieces just using a 1/2 inch seam allowance so that it looked just like this and I have these little corners in the corner and then after I sewed my really simple benches heat cover I just turned it right side out and after that large piece of foam inside I decided to make this bench seat covered non removable with no zipper just because it was really easy to sew plus I'm using indoor/outdoor fabric so this sort of fabric washes really really easily the finishing touch for this bench seat cover was sewing it shut by hand just using kind of a blind stitch just like this I'm really loving this neutral color too because we'll be able to change up the look of this built-in look bench with pillows whenever we want so we chose to make our bench not really a built-in I could slide it around wherever I want which I really like because I tend to change my decor a lot but if you wanted to make this more of an actual built-in you could just nail it right to the studs in your wall and this is how our DIY bench turned out I am so happy with it and I can't wait to share with you guys how I finished at breakfast of notebooks [Music] thanks so much for watching this tutorial today I hope you found it interesting let me know in the comments below if you've ever seen this done
