[Applause] [Applause] is [Music] [Music] [Music] if you would at home whatever you're doing [Music] you know the family sometimes you might be sitting there together you might be scattered and we don't always know if everybody's following these instructions at home but we do know that there's a good portion of you who are if you would please close your eyes wherever you are right now and raise your hands to the heavens because i don't know if you can feel the presence of god right now the same way that we're feeling it in this house but i know that god is there just as heavily as he is right now in this building so would you raise your hands and i want you to speak over your home wherever you are and i want you to say god ascend to the throne of our hearts right now god we want to lift up your name we want to lift up everything that we have to offer it at your feet to sacrifice every distraction to sacrifice every worry that we brought in with us everything that is built up and accumulated to god we're laying it at your feet and we want to declare you lord in savior of all do that in your home would you just raise your voice just a little bit say something to god to let him know that you believe him you take him at his word and he still has every authority over your life in jesus name in jesus name [Music] we didn't expect to be back online only right now and i know that it causes kind of a disruption in our plans and we do so somewhat begrudgingly i get that i understand that but i don't want us to discount the possibility that god can do something more through you at your home right now than he's ever done in any sunday and any service that you have ever attended if you allow him god can move on your heart right now so i pray that every person in your homes if you have your family with you if you're by yourself i want you to plug in for just a few moments here as i'm about to preach but quickly we do have a few announcements we want to let you know we remind you that our turkey giveaway is this saturday the 21st if you ordered a turkey to pick up and deliver yourself you can pick it up this saturday at 9 30 a.m next sunday we are planning to be back together in the house of god and having our communion service that is the plan and this wednesday we're still trying to determine exactly what we're going to do but keep your eyes on the announcements online look at our social media accounts monday and tuesday we should have something to go by at that point but we also remind you if you're a person that sees all these announcements if you know somebody that doesn't get on social media doesn't look at any of this i want you to do something for us pass the word on to them give them a phone call or a text message something to let them know what our plan is this wednesday so that they will have an idea of what's going on and lastly our midweek service thanksgiving week is going to be moved to the tuesday of that week november the 24th at seven o'clock p.m so just keep that in mind that's coming up thanksgiving kind of snuck up on me this year it seems in some ways that this year has dragged on but for some reason the holidays are now upon us and we got a little ahead of ourselves my wife sherry has already decorated the house with christmas uh decorations we have the tree up the lights are shining through the window and are trying to spread a little early holiday joy so i think that's okay maybe that offends you maybe not who cares all right but i'm going to speak on this subject with you today if you only knew it's considered that job might be the earliest written book in the bible it might be the longest standing book in the bible written earlier than in these other portions where it's a story of a godly man who had a lot but everything that he had was stripped away from him satan believed that job if he was given the opportunity and he had any sort of cause at all to do so would curse god if only god would lift the hedge of protection that he had placed around job if every blessing was taken away from him if god lifted that hedge of protection the job would curse god's name and he would turn his back on the one who had blessed him with so much if every blessing was removed would job turn from god in the story of job it's often kind of painted as this depressing picture and look you can read about what happened to him in the first few chapters you can listen to the conversations you can hear a state of mind and you might get the impression that yes it's a depressing book but there's so much more to this to the story of job into this entire book in the bible that has such an uplifting ending and if you just pay attention there's so much that we can glean from this book and because of its tone some people steer away from it at times but i would i would argue that it's something that you should return to often because there's so much good in it when god did indeed lift that hedge of protection away from job and his family satan began his work immediately he did not waste any time job quickly lost his 7 000 sheep he lost his 3 000 camels his 500 yoke of oxen 500 donkeys his servants were killed and then worst of all his 10 children in one fell swoop were killed in the house where they dined together after that satan said look i know that he's not cursed you yet but if you lift the hedge even more and allow me to get to his body to his health if you let me attack him directly he's going to turn on you so god lifted that head just a little bit more and then his own health declined immediately he was covered in boils and tormented by the pain and to kind of summarize it he lost his health he lost his income he lost his family he lost his possessions and suddenly the man that was referred to as the greatest man in the east was nothing all the blessings that he had built up were gone everything turned in an instant i won't discuss the first 37 chapters in detail i wouldn't do that to you i'd encourage you to read this this beautiful book again but if i could summarize it in exactly one word you could summarize the book of job in this word why why why did this happen why is this going on right now what did i do i was making sacrifices for my family i was trying to live a life dedicated to god why did any of this happen in chapter three job begins his his questioning and question after question began with that word why he started it off with a pretty despairing comment he said why did i not die at birth if this is what awaited me why did i live at all why was i ever permitted to be born i wish that i had died the day that i was born he begins to break and he begins to crumble a little bit and in chapter 7 he starts directing directing these questions at god and saying what have i done to you why are you targeting me he has his say and he says it out loud and he says it at length and he wonders why and then job's friends get the microphone and they step up and they have these big long speeches it almost sounds like they had a lot of it prepared and then they wonder aloud why what did you do to deserve this because clearly clearly you did something to deserve all of this why the whole book over and over again why why why and then god is over to the side he's sitting this out he's silent until suddenly he makes his appearance in chapter 38 and part of what i like about this passage there's certain things where you get a a glimpse of the character of god and it reveals a little bit more of who he is and i like this passage because it reveals that god has a little bit of a sarcastic side it reveals that god has a little bit of a sharp sense of humor when it comes down to it it starts in 38 verse 1 then the lord answered job out of the whirlwind and said who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge now gird up your loins like a man and i will ask you and you instruct me where were you when i laid the foundation of the earth and just in case you missed it pretty much god just told job to put on his big boy pants and buckle up he said tell me if you have understanding who said its measurement since you know since you know this is where the sarcasm comes in since you know since you know so much and you're so brilliant or or who stretched the line on it on what were its bases sunk or who laid its cornerstone when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of god shouted for joy or who enclosed the sea with doors when bursting forth it went out from the womb when i made a cloud its garment in thick darkness its swaddling band and i placed boundaries on it instead of bolt and doors and i said thus far you shall come but no further and here shall your proud wave stop he's telling him i set all of this around you and i put it perfectly in its place and i said this is where you stop where were you where were you with all of your intellect with all of your questioning with all of your knowledge that you claim to have with all of this insight where were you when i did all of this have you ever in your life commanded the morning and caused the dawn to know its place that it might take hold of the ends of the earth and the wicked be shaken out of it for four chapters god steadily puts job in his place and after all of that job responds with five verses after the realization of who and what god really is hits him directly between the eyes the first words that escaped his trembling lips where i know that thou canst do everything job suffered with a sickness that often plagues a lot of us i say that probably the majority of us are not immune to this problem it's called the dunning-kruger effect to put it in as simple terms as i can although it misses some of the depth of it people who are bad at something are more likely to be overconfident in that area while somebody who is an expert in that field understands how little they actually know so they don't get overconfident about it you've heard somebody say before look do you know what like you might ask them do you know anything about about putting a toilet together and they might say i know just enough to be dangerous it's true if you know just enough but you really believe you know what you're doing it's actually dangerous it's the dunning-kruger effect it's the person at the dinner table thanksgiving's coming up who everyone knows is wrong wrong about what they're talking about but for some reason they're so confident when they deliver that opinion that everybody either believes them or they just leave it alone a little bit and say look you're not going to change their mind just let them be wrong but they're not just wrong they're loud wrong it's the dunning-kruger effect so job and his three friends for 34 chapters and his wife also for 34 chapters were loud wrong and all too often that's a lot like us you could say it this way we don't know what we don't know god tries to give us hints every now and then hints about what he thinks and about what his character says and about what he is going to do and he says look i know that y'all have it all figured out i know that you've got the understanding that even i god above do not have but listen to me isaiah 55 8-9 it's one of my favorite passages for my thoughts are not your thoughts nor are your ways my way says the lord for as the heavens are higher than the earth so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts and what happens is we get this denny dunning krueger effect going on and we start asking the questions and we say god look look i know i i've heard that passage of scripture before i've heard it so many times and for some reason the preachers keep on bringing it back up i get it i've heard that before but why covet why 2020 why are we suffering why why don't you see my struggles why don't you hear my prayers and god's looking down he's like you say my prayers don't you mean you're whining and we're like god no it's not whining it's supplication i don't know if you're familiar with this term god but it's supplication is what we're bringing like that sounds an awful lot like whining right now actually we have this effect where we think some reason that god is worthy of being questioned that god is worthy of being asked why would you do this don't you know what i'm trying to do and have you not seen what i'm walking through right now it's a dunning-kruger effect i've seen something over the years and i've seen it sometimes in myself and i want to address it and try to dig it out and get it out of the way but i was reminded of it the other day it's been several weeks ago now i was in a gas station waiting in line there was only one person working at the counter and i'm standing in this line and the man at the front of the line pulls his mask down and he says i'll take i believe he had 20 20 he ordered 20 of these lottery tickets he's scratching win tickets and he took this long line of these tickets and he went over to the other counter that didn't have an attendee there and he starts scratching out every single one of those tickets he would look down and just went down the line and he's joking and laughing with people around he's barely even paying attention to what he's doing he's just talking and just scratching and scratching he's like yeah yeah how's everything been you guys still staying busy blah blah and he just keeps on going down the line and rolls up this line and just scratch scratch scratch scratch and then finally at the end he does something that kind of blew my mind he's just smiling and talking and all these tickets that he just paid for he takes that entire line and he says well y'all have a good day and he walks the door and he throws a trash can as he leaves that store he didn't even act upset the way that he acted was he never expected to win anything this is just what he did this is just he just went down the line and scratch well it's good to see you throw it away and all too often i feel that's how our prayers have become we say maybe today and we scratch and we're just talking well it's good to see you this sunday it's good to hang out with you a little bit i wish that we were back in one service now yeah it's great it's good to see you well didn't win today you take care and we say i'll see you next sunday i didn't really expect to win anything today but i just went through this motion this this pattern that i'm doing over and over again i didn't really believe that god could answer this one today but just maybe just maybe i have this one in a million chance of something happening but hebrews 11 and 6 says without faith it is impossible to please him for he who comes to god must believe that he is and that he is a rewarder of those who seek him by faith noah being warned by god about things not yet seen in reverence prepared in ark for the salvation of his household by which he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness which is according to faith faith is a substance of things hoped for the evidence of things unseen you have to pray like you believe it you have to expect like you believe that the prayers that you have invested the prayers that are being stored in heaven the tears that you have cried out being stored in vials are going to come to fruition if we believe there's no room for worry there's no room for doubt there's no room for the questioning why we can still be like the one who jesus himself said has more faith than anyone he had ever seen to say god i believe but help my unbelief and i'm going to pray like something will happen i'm sending out a reminder today at the end of a very difficult year that god has been good to us throughout this season but no one is going to lie to you today there have been issues that's why you're sitting where you're sitting right now there have been issues there have been trials there have been worries there's been so much and i mourn the men and women of god the people that we have lost during this season but as far as i'm concerned the long-term effects that it could have on our faith is just as damaging if not more so than the problems of this season the pandemics and protests and politics the mask and no mask and mask and no mask and back and forth the mainstream news and social media censorship politicians trying to cancel thanksgiving and christmas not their thanksgiving and christmas are thanksgiving and christmas a worldwide rise in domestic violence three times as many people being diagnosed with anxiety disorders this year four times as many people developing depressive disorders this year yes the church's trajectory is still upward and onward but we would be lying if we said that there were not many individuals dealing with the effects of worry of anxiety of doubt struggling day by day and i've spoken to so many of them lately i don't betray the trust of this person i'm not giving any details they were not a povc member but somebody called me not long ago now and they asked me can you please speak to my family member can you talk to them because they're struggling right now and they're worried and they're shaking in the house because the anxiety has built up to a point where they've been online and everything they're reading and everything has them so shaken up that they cannot even stand they can't do anything they're just shaking in fear and dealing with all of this so i had to talk to him and my heart went out to him but i reject the idea that nothing can be done i reject the idea that god is not completely fully totally aware of what's going on and also has a plan for the church during this season it is not a time for us to buckle under the weight of worry and stress and fear but a time for the church to rise up and say god i don't see everything i don't know what you know if i only knew a fraction of what you were trying to speak into my life right now i'd feel fine but god for right now i will trust you i don't know what i don't know so i'm going to believe you let me remind you in first corinthians 9 and 11 as it is written eye has not seen nor ear heard nor have entered into the heart of a man the things which god has prepared for those who love him but god is revealed to them through his spirit god has revealed to them through his spirit for the spirit searches all things yes the deep things of god for what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him even so no one knows the things of god except the spirit of god we don't know what we don't know but the holy ghost knows and it will always no god spoke to job out of a whirlwind there is a rushing mighty wind that wants to move through your home and bring back a sense of peace and security our response to this chaos is a direct indicator of where our trust actually lies i'm going to say this again our response to all of this chaos is a direct indicator of where our trust where our belief actually lies do you find your trust wavering are you fighting the negative flood of worry and of doubt then let me make a suggestion get off your phone turn off your television get out the word of god and don't even get out the one that's on your phone get this one out because nobody can send you a notification that appears at the top of the page and all too often where the bible loses that battle for some reason get out the word of god and start to believe every word let god tell you who he is my god can do all things my god can do all things there is nothing that is impossible for him nothing too great nothing too difficult nothing beyond his power let god tell you you don't know what you don't know but if we only knew god if i only knew here's the thing about job's problems they were not imaginary they were very real and you might feel like you've had a difficult year but your year was not even nearly as bad as one day in job's life his friends came to see him because they heard about what was happening and when they walk up on him they see him cutting off the boils with rocks trying to ease the pain and trying to do something they saw a man with his garment renting his head shaved and sorrow written all over his face a man who lost his ten children his ten blessings from the lord his problems were real but job's reality was never permitted to be used as an excuse for his indignation against god not once god was silent for a while and he let him spill out his heart but at the end he said do you not remember that i am the source of every blessing and every good thing that you had and i can give it back just as easily as it was taken we are more than conquerors through him that loved us somebody needs to get a conquering vibe back in your house to say i'm not bowing down to the negative news to all the stuff this just garbling up this year i'm not gonna bow to it any longer we are more than conquerors through him that loved us the issues might be real the problems might be real the hurt might be real but our god is every bit as real job's issues were legitimate but god did not coddle him he simply reminded him you don't know what you don't know but if you only knew if you only knew all you would have to do is say there is a god that i cannot see but i feel him in this house right now i'm trembling behind this pulpit because i feel the presence of god there's so much that i don't know in so much that i don't know that i don't know but there is a god there is a god who can do anything [Music] i said it before joe's problems were very real [Music] i don't want you to misinterpret what i'm saying so hear me out there has been a shift in our culture over the past few decades terrible things happen in our world where sin has its way terrible things always follow things that blow your mind you don't understand how how something this bad could be perpetrated by another human being another person of flesh and blood but you hear the news stories and you hear about crime and you hear about violence and you hear about human trafficking and you read these stories and if it doesn't break your heart something's wrong these problems are very real so don't misinterpret me however however our culture has put a premium on victimhood it's put a premium on you understanding that not only are you a victim but that your victimhood is something that you should wear as a badge of honor as you walk around and say look look at this with no desire to make your way past the victimhood look at this look what i've got but i'm carrying around with me if you deal with worry and anxiety and stress you're supposed to say look i deal with this but do you fight it joe was never allowed to use his reality as an excuse for his indignation we've worried this year you think we're exempt we've worried this year pastor my dad over here he's here with us in the building started for us last year with my brother worried about him worried that his life was possibly coming to an end worried and praying and saying god please show up and then this year begins then i was worried about my wife after giving birth to our third child worried about her worried about my son who developed this issue and then we worried the doctor said if this progresses his kidneys could begin to shut down worried about it worried then in march about covet worried about the church then worried again over my parents as they as they were diagnosed with coed worry worry worry and it kept creeping back in and trying to push through the door into our homes so we're not exempt and i've been very honest with you over the years about my own struggles about dealing with depression and anxiety in my own life i could wear it as a badge and say hey give me a little attention i'm not saying that's what people do don't don't misunderstand me some people do but i'm not saying that's what's always going on don't misunderstand i'm saying don't wear it as a badge use it as a call to bear arms against an enemy that would try to label you with something that god said is never his will when job heard god speak from a whirlwind and put his greatness into perspective job had just a few sentences that he could manage to utter in job 41 1-6 job answered the lord and said i know that you can do all things and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted who is this that heights counsel without knowledge therefore i have declared that which i did not understand things too wonderful for me which i did not know hear me hear now and i will speak i will ask you and you instruct me i've heard of you by the hearing of the ear but now my eye sees you therefore i retreat and i repent in dust and ashes [Music] today i am not telling you if you have been dealing with fear and anxiety and worry and anger and rage and indignation and all the things that are building up in people's spirits it's happening all across our country and even our world i'm not telling you that it's not real i'm telling you that it's not something to accept job ended his short response to god not by saying i get it now not by saying look okay i see now and he did say that to god but that's not how he ended his response to god speaking out of a whirlwind was to repent you want me to make you feel better i'm not going to make you feel better i don't have that capacity you want to feel better you want to feel secure you want to feel like god still has it under control first of all hear and accept his word and his declarations of his power and everything that he is capable of second repent second repent of every moment where your faith was shaken enough that you had the audacity to look up and say god why why why we don't know what we don't know but if we only knew today i will lead you in prayer but i will only start your prayer today i will lead you in prayer and publicly repent of my own worry my own doubt my own contempt and anger not just in god but over circumstances all around that have tried to find a gap in the walls of our hearts but remember right now to repent is not to wallow in sorrow get it out to repent is to turn away and to leave that mindset behind to march away in the opposite direction away from fear directly to boldness away from doubt directly to belief away from anger and back directly to peace god remind us of who you are remind us that there is so much that we don't know that we don't know but if we only knew where you are right now i want you to raise your hands if you are physically able i want you to get down on your knees in your home and i want you to raise your hands and surrender and start to put god back in his rightful place of honoring your life say god i don't have all the answers god you've heard every thought in my mind you've seen every moment where my faith was shaken when i was weak when i said god how long is this season going to go on i don't know but father i know that i can trust you i know god that you hold every answer to every question that is poured out of me but god i do not hold contempt and i'm not going to worry today my home is not going to doubt or fear but god we are going to accept that there is a god above who can do everything so god speak out of your spirit today let that rushing body wind flow in this house and in every house where somebody is watching right now god let your voice be the only thing that we hear go ahead and pray in your home as those singers are going to sing they're going to sing a song of faith of declaration of the power of god i want you to declare it in your own home no more fear no more worry god let it be [Music] done [Music] you take what the enemy is for me [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] everybody [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh [Music] me [Music] i'm [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] is [Music] and the lord restored joe's losses when he prayed for his friends indeed the lord gave job twice as much as he had before then all his brothers and all his sisters and all those who had been as acquaintances before came to him and ate food with him in his house and they consoled him and comforted him for the adversity that the lord had brought upon him now the lord blessed the latter days of job more than his beginning [Music] whatever you are worried that you are losing [Music] expect for god to bring twice as much if you've worried about losing one kid expect for both kids to come back to god if you've worried about losing your job expect for the next one to be twice the job that you have if you've been praying for health for your body expect for your entire home to be lifted up in health and peace and joy it happened when joe prayed when he called out to god call out to god and accept the promises of his word father we don't know what we don't know but if we only knew we declare it right now in the name of jesus christ [Music] is [Music] [Music] is [Music] is [Music] [Applause] [Music] is [Music] [Music] did you take what the enemy meant for me what the enemy meant foreign and every time you make a way i am [Music] foreign [Music] god [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh [Music] is [Music] let's go [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] this
