let's go [Applause] hi this is Bill for Sparky Channel and I'd like to welcome you to the 2022 ideal National Championship where some of the best electricians in the nation compete for six hundred thousand dollars in cash and prizes this round is the semifinals of The Apprentice Division and this is Jordan finfrock is one of 10 contestants that has made it to the semifinals and only five will go forward to the finals here's a drawing that has been given to the contestants this is a sub panel you just saw Jordan taking the cover off of this subpanel and the contestants are two run feeders to the sub panel and then they are to install three circuit breakers and then they are to install these junction boxes and they have five junction boxes and one for a light a total of six and they are to drill holes through the studs and they are to run wires from these circuit breakers this circuit breaker right here is 15 amp and they are to run wire to this receptacle and this receptacle for that circuit this circuit breaker is a 20 amp circuit breaker and it's going to come down here with the 12 gauge wire and it will serve this 20 amp receptacle this third circuit breaker is 15 amp and it runs down here and it goes to this three-way switch and then this three-way switch and then the light these boxes only have to be roughed in for this contest that is he doesn't have to actually install the receptacles and lights and switches he just has to get it ready for the drywall we call that rough again and then there's placement of the boxes these two boxes must be 16 inches above finished floor to the top of the box here and here these three boxes must be 48 inches above finish floor to the top of the box this light box right here must be 80 inches above finished floor to the middle of the box here Jordan is getting his feeders from an overhead gutter where they had been stored in a previous round he'll be installing them in the sub panel after getting his feeder wires out of the gutter he's going to screw the lid back on now Jordan Will terminate his feeders in the sub panel it's very important in a sub panel that you put the neutral on the neutral bar and the ground on the ground bar and they must never be connected together in a sub panel foreign wire which we call an equipment grounding conductor on the ground bar foreign has finished terminating his feeder wires and now he's going to start installing his junction boxes he's checking the drawing that I showed you earlier and he'll be putting the boxes at all the proper locations thank you all right next time that's Tom Kennedy in the background he's a professional contender in the professional semi-finals they are working on different projects but they're working on the same structure now Jordan Will drill holes in the studs for the non-metallic cables the upper holes will be for the upper boxes and the lower holes will be for the lower boxes now Jordan will knock out a factory knockout from the bottom of the sub panel now Jordan will start running his 14-2 with ground cable to the bottom two receptacles foreign [Music] foreign the 14-2 with ground from the light box to the second three-way switch it's on a different circuit from the receptacles he was running the 14-2 with ground cable two just a moment ago but it's the same kind of cable foreign and he'll run it to circuit breaker number one which is 15 amps Jordan is competing for forty thousand dollars for first place twenty thousand dollars for second place or ten thousand dollars for a third place now he's running some more 14-2 with ground cable to the first three-way switch box and then that's going to go to the sub panel and then those wires will go to circuit breaker number five so the wire that he's running right now is coming from the first three-way switch box and it's coming down here through the stud and it's going to come in here and go to this lower circuit breaker you see this is number one this is number three and this is number five that's why I said it's circuit breaker number five so this is 14 2 with ground right here and these receptacles for 14 2 with ground and this wire going to the light is 14 2 with ground so we ran everything that he needed to run with 14 2 with ground that cable going between this three-way switch and this three-way switch will need to be 14-3 with ground he'll need an extra conductor so the conductors will be red black and white for this run and then you see but that's a different cable so he's going to do that later and then this middle circuit breaker here this is 12-2 with ground to go to this 20 amp receptacle now Jordan has grabbed the 12-2 with ground cable and he's going to run it to that middle upper receptacle which is a 20 amp receptacle and then it's going to go over to the sub panel and it's going to go to the middle circuit breaker which is the number three circuit breaker and that will be a 20 amp circuit breaker you might think that these guys would run all of circuit one and all of circuit three then all the circuit five but that's not how they do it they run all of one kind of cable and then all of another kind of cable and then all of the Third Kind of cable it's faster that way you have to know what the circuits are very well but you'll pick up speed if you just run all of a certain kind of cable even though you switch from one circuit to another while you're running all of that kind of cable foreign 15 minutes into the competition now he's adding cable Staples to secure the cables [Music] lots of progress on this one I feel great you feel great that's what I'm talking about that's a better attitude yeah is that the difference you got a plan today um and I like the attitude thank you knock it out foreign now that Jordan has all of his cable Staples nailed in place he has grabbed the 14-3 with ground cable and this is the one that has the extra conductor he will run it from the first three-way switch box to the second three-way switch box the red and the black conductors will serve as what we call traveler wires to help the three-way switches function correctly Jordan will now land his hot wires to The Breakers his neutral wires to the neutral bar and his ground wires to the Ground Bar in a sub panel it's always very important to separate the neutrals and the grounds here are the three Breakers Jordan will now use an ideal Torx screwdriver to torque down his breaker terminations and he'll torque down his ground and neutral terminations now Jordan is putting the cover back on the sub panel Jordan will now get his grounds together and push them in the back of the box but he'll have one bare ground pigtail sticking out of the box for his three-way switch he will be installing standard three-way switches that do not need a neutral so he'll get his neutrals together strip them put on a wire nut and put them in the back of the box now he'll jump over to his second three-way switch and do the same thing foreign as a reminder only five pros and five student apprentices will advance to the finals going to be slashed by 50 now Jordan will start working on the circuit that includes the two lower receptacles he has just gotten his grounds together and he has one bare ground wire protruding from the box and now he's going to work on the neutrals he's going to strip off the ends and now he's going to create a pigtail for his neutral wires foreign pigtail which will serve the hot terminal of his first receptacle as a result he has wound up with a nice ground wire a white neutral wire and a black hot wire for his first receptacle now as Jordan looks over his plans you can see Tom Kennedy the pro working on his side of the little garage and working on his professional project Jordan has completed the project but he's looking over his paperwork to make sure he has done absolutely everything it's very important there's going to be judges looking at it in a little bit and checking to see if everything's just right so now he's going to check over everything make sure everything's roughed in properly and he likes it he likes it he's going to go to the cart there and look for the little timer and hit the timer that's it he's finished okay Jordan's done [Music] now the judges will come around and judge all 10 semi-finalist apprentices and we will see which five apprentices are going to the finals welcome [Applause] [Music] [Applause] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] thank you and the last finalists in the game for up to forty thousand dollars let's congratulate [Music] [Applause] let's give it up to our top wow [Applause]
