Cardinal Hayes High School star and soon to be UNC Tar Heel Ian Jackson Ian Jackson isn't your typical Cardinal Hayes High School basketball player and the basketball player my goal is to be a number one draft and not going to college that's two years from now um just understanding I'm still going to play in the moment so I'm still in high school I still got things to do here some basketball and sports accounts from YouTube to tick tock call Jackson the greatest basketball player to come out of New York City kind of trying not to looking too much but I must be grateful for it to be recognized as I can be one of the best players to ever come out of New York it doesn't seem like anything stresses them out to his credit he's pretty laid-back kid pretty humble kid it's been a unique season for head coach Joe lodes with college coaches attending almost all their games when the coaches come around it's weird it's like the kids realize right away you see him all of a sudden they start running a little faster and playing a little harder but it seems to have helped the Cardinals what are your goals while you're still at Hayes are the winner is moving on the championship that's why I fight uh familiar with each other in comparison to New York a lot less busy I feel like New York is a lot more active than Jersey is um you know always like people hopping on the trains and all that like not a lot of people do that in Jersey as much as New York and I feel like like I said with Jersey I feel like New York people got a different attitude with them too it's like every state got their own type of Personality really you don't really go to New York not really I I do live really close to New York but I don't I don't really go over there unless it's for like basketball or something like early in the morning or something or like two days not really but that that like waking up early and all I didn't start to like high school or maybe like yeah like high school but like for me as a young kid it's like on the weekends you know you wake up you're excited you're like what are we what are we doing today with your friends and then what your dad tells you now you can't go out at this time you got to go to the gym that's like like dang I don't I don't want to go to the gym right now I want to hang with my friends but waking up like crazy schedule didn't start till like high school what was your schedule High School I started doing like like two days um I would have I would have workouts and then I'll have practice and then after practice I have to get extra shots up so I feel like in my trainer he's like he he makes sure I stay on top of my stuff but you don't let me slack at all so Not only was it my parents hard on me but my my trainer as well he treats me like I'm his little brother and make sure I'm doing what I've got to do are there like other motivations like you kind of want to take care of your family or you kind of just love the game really just loving the game I feel like with a lot of players everybody's like main reason they want to take care of their parents but like for me it's like my parents really don't need me to make it like they're gonna be fine so it's really just me loving the game and me wanting to do it for myself like no one really pressures nah I feel like that's something a decision I make of my own to keep going like if you stop playing basketball I feel like my parents and my coaches would definitely be disappointed because I put a lot of time hard work and effort into all of this and it's like if you if you was doing all that why stop so like I mean I feel like now I'm I'm too deep in to stop I'm doing it for myself at this point I'm doing it for my for my my family my coaches because they all been through the Journey with me like we all put a bunch of time into this [Music] definitely a lot of a lot of their time they they spent a lot of their time taking me to tournaments practices missing work missing family events stuff like that yeah you know they got to take time off to go travel at the tournaments that they got to stay like four days away I feel like those are big sacrifices [Music] [Music] thank you [Music] going into my high school year I played in like a summer league game and I'm playing against the oil the older dudes bigger dudes because I'm used to Middle School basketball you know they just bumping me around like I'm not there pushing me around I'm getting tossed around so I was like I told my dad like I like that like we gotta do something about that so that's when he started taking me to the gym and that's when I started to get stronger and being able to hold for my own out there so that was like one of the biggest like reality checks I've had probably um they probably expect me to just sit in the gym all day and watch basketball all day like that's not what I do at all I like spending a lot of time with my friends because I don't get that much time to spend with them so what I do you know I really take advantage of it like this summer I feel like the longest I've been home in a in a row was like five days I've been on planes almost every other weekend traveling going all over the place I don't really get to see my friends it's like when I'm not in the gym and I'm with my friends I like to spend as much time with them as I can so to clarify even though you have had a decent life you're still not rich yet nope not at all got a long way to go you think that makes it even more humble yeah definitely you know growing up you see all these like cartoons and shows and that's like that's always like every kid dream be rich and famous with all these cars big house I feel like I actually have a chance to be there so that's that's something I'm gonna take advantage of like I have that opportunity I'm gonna make the most of it [Music] [Music] I feel like money for for high schoolers like myself has just like become a new thing so like you know when I've been playing basketball the last however many years it's been I've never been worried about money so I don't know why I would change my mindset now and like my parents my parents always tell me they're like just take care of your business on the court and they're gonna handle everything off the court like don't even worry about that what do you think and what do you learned from like the past New Jersey that were like hot in the city some some players there was reasons to it um they didn't stay focused and some it's just like not everybody as good as all these players were not everybody is like that being not for everybody there's other routes you can go and still be professional and play basketball but like I feel like everything happens for a reason everybody everybody pass is different [Music] um I want to say God but like jersey with hoopers especially real supportive like you if you tough you got a lot of people in your corner because now you representing the state and right now it's a big debate on what state is the best hoop state so like if you tough in Jersey like they definitely gonna let you know like like you him like they gonna they're gonna make sure that you feel loved [Music] why sometimes yeah I feel like if you fall into the social media hype and all that you start like your head start blowing up and you and then that's when you start losing focus you know you start doing things that you're not supposed to be doing and that's definitely something that could cause you to to fall off [Music] you know my coaches always teach me keep working hard um really like not with basketball like you're not always going to be the star like you are back home like for my AAU team or for my high school team like as you start to get older like it's not everybody not everybody is the man where everybody where you're taking 15 20 shots a game it's fun while you're young but like it really become a business as you get older and that's not for everybody [Music] thank you
