hi welcome to chops garage well a very windy chops garage and a subject of today's video this Ford Focus and why I am never going to distant sell cars ever again this is chops garage the real life car trading Channel let's get into it now those you that watch the channel regular will know this car we bought it off one of our subscriber is a fantastic 1.6 turbocharged Ford Focus estate on a 2013 it has got a full service history including its belt and water pump and it's in fabulous condition we uh got this car in we put it out for sale less than uh £500 less than Auto Trader recommended for this car um and it's just everybody who seen it just think it's it's a fantastic looking car obviously as soon as you went out for sale the phone started to ring and we had one chap who was very very keen on the car now I will point out this here that with all of my cars I take about say 30 photos of the car which I put across my website or Auto Trader but I also do walk around videos if you want to see the walk around video on this car which is going to be relevant to this video it's over on my other channel CG Car Sales I'll put a link in the description down below where I put up the videos the walk around videos of my cars but what I'll tell you now is when I do my walk around videos what I do is I say we're going to have a look around the car panel by panel and I literally go in front of the car and I will go by around the car panel by panel as I said pointing out the headlight any stone chips lower chrome grill literally every wheel every panel of the car we'll look down the side of the car we'll go up close I'll point out any marks at all because the biggest complaint you get in this game is when people turn up to look at cars and they aren't as described my conversion rate of people coming to see cars they've seen in the video and then and purchase them is is probably 99.9% it's Mega High people always come along and say James the car is exactly as described and I've never had a situation where someone's got a car taking it home and gone oh he didn't point out that blemish the other blemish and so forth so that's the way I do business it's worked really well for me today I put the advert up with the video on it and all the photos phone started ringing straight away one guy absolutely adamant that he wanted this car he loves Fords he knows forwards he knows this combination is a bit rare and he said I want the car I want the car I'm going to get a train and I'm going to come down and I'm going to get the car off you he said I'm going to put down the deposit I said no problem to you seen the videos yet seen the photos yet no problem at all he said I'm going to come down and on the train no no problem at all he said can you get itot for me so I can drive it back with a fresh mot and I did say on the sale I'd do a fresh mot that's no problem at all so I took his deposit just1 holding deposits all I charged took the car down got it moted now as it was down getting his M I started to get phone calls from the chat saying that it was too far to come down by train and he was arranging with the AA to pick up the car now I'd never heard of this before apparently the AA do offer a pickup service I think they Outsource it to other companies so he said he was going to have it picked up and also he needed Finance so he was going to sort Finance out now one thing absolutely could reassure our customer about on the Ford Focus was its history because before I bought it of course I did my car vertical car vertical for those who don't already know is the largest online database of vehicle information available it's an essential check to do before purchasing any car check out our focus's car vertical report here's the report back for the focus we've got a green tick for theft a green tick for mileage a green tick for finance and a green tick for damage meaning it's got a completely clear history as we scroll down we can see it's never been recorded as stolen it's got a mileage graph that has no strange Peaks or troughs indicating any kind of roll back or anything no Financial outstanding on it and it has nothing on the damage records meaning there's never been recorded as an insurance write off but we know that so many cars do have a hidden history that's why these checks are so important look what somebody found when they checked checked out a car they were considering buying on car vertical so this focuses report came back as a green tick for theft a green tick for mileage and a green tick for finance but it had a yellow warning for damage if we scroll down car vertical even has pictures of this car and its damage State at auction and you can see it is a seriously heavy impact car verto confirms that this car was not only damaged once but twice and it was category s structurally damaged so this is something you absolutely would want to know if you're going to look at this vehicle in a repaired State because its value is at least 30% less than the equivalent non category damaged vehicle now the great news is if you want to do your own car vertical on a car you've already bought a car you're going always the ones that end up being Troublesome and we're starting to now he's changing his mind he's not coming down to see the car himself he's getting it picked up now he's not paying up front he's getting Finance done so this just all adds complications and these are the kind of things that can hold up a sale while somebody else walks along who's local has the cash and is ready to buy the car there and then but I'd taken his deposit the car was down getting mot so I stuck with the deal he ended up having this problem getting Finance I said well do you want to deal with my finance company I gave my finance company his detail said to my finance company to be honest I don't have time to be running uh all the checks this that and the other if you can find in finance fair fair dues I'm not P about commissions keep the commissions to yourself there's too much in the sort of law with finance that I really don't want to get involved with although I have got my Consumer Credit license so I let the two of them deal with each other directly and they secured in finance great he then said he sorted with the AA the pickup of the car and it was going to be on the Friday the car I was taken down for well I'd already known actually this point I think that the car had passed its Mt advisory 3 straight away no problems at all because the thing is mint so he said it's going to be picked up on Friday so I came in on Thursday got the car revaled after picking it up from theot got all my paperwork ready together for the driver to sign off on the condition of the car before it went down to him confirmation the finance company were transferring the funds in time which they had done so we all good to go so Friday I've got the car inside when I when prices are when spaces are premium I need to get some cars inside the other cars that have been cleaned but I kept inside cuz I wanted it even though it's going to be transported all the way to London on a transporter I wanted it to at least leave my place mint and I do photographs and videos to prove it left mint from my place anyway Friday came and went and the car wasn't picked up I chased the guy up said what's happening said oh they let me down they're going to pick it up on Saturday I said Saturday I wasn't coming on Saturday I've got no appointments I was going to spend some time with the family went oh yeah the only time they can come down is Saturday so okay I'll come in on Saturday cuz again I wanted the space I wanted the car gone and I wanted the space so I came in on Saturday we got to about 2:00 in the afternoon and I told the chat I had to leave at 5:00 on the dot I said where's your Transport company he said oh they've let me down again why he hadn't ranged me to let me know I this I do not know so he said right they've let me down again they can't actually pick up this Saturday I went flipping out I said well I can't keep the car inside any longer I've moved other cars inside it will have to stay out until pickup he said yeah I'm going to try and range on Monday for a pickup I said look do you want to use my guy I'd actually given him Adrian's details before and said he's not the cheapest but he's 100% bulletproof labo I said do you want the details of my guy so he said yes I'll have those speaks to Adrian and Adrian arranged he's going to pick out with me 8:00 on Monday morning so that's again bit earlier than normally cuz normally go to the gym we the dog first in the morning but came in early to get the car loaded up with Adrian so that he could get it down to London for this Chap and this guy was so thankful because he was going away on Wednesday he was going away on holiday and he wanted the car to go away on holiday and the way it was looking with the AA Malak he wasn't going to get it in time so he was so grateful that Adrien was able to come drop having it and come straight away on Monday and pick up the car Adrian as always here at 8:00 on the dot picked the car up loaded it strapped it down beautifully had all the paperwork ready to go for the car so bear in mind this point this guy has had already seen the full walk around video that I put on my site for everyone he's seen all the photos he's phon me up and asked me a lot more questions about the spec exact specs even down to what the color code was for the car he wanted to know the exact code for the color of the car to make sure it was the one he was expecting confirm all the features of the vehicle all of those things I then did him a specific walk around video when he said he was going to have it transported I said right I'm going to do you a specific walk around video of the car all over again so you're 100 % what you're going to be getting so you know if there's anything specific you want me to show you and he was like no no it's all right just yeah if you can just do me another walk around video so he had a second walkaround video specifically for him so car's back to this car's been loaded up Adrian's gone up to London gets out there about 3:00 in the afternoon I start getting phone calls I start getting phone calls I start getting emails from the guy uh get a hold of him James I'm going to return the car why why are you going to return the car well I'm going to turn the car because it's had paint workor and you didn't tell me and the boot lid is rusting I'm like right okay one I never had any paint workk done on the car at all I didn't if I'd had paintwork done I told you but I literally NE had nothing done paintwork one of the few cars I've had to do no paint workk to at all I had no paint workor and I said boot rusting I said the thing is mint it's you know for a 2013 the thing is mint now bear in mind he'd also said to me on the phone ear I'm not expecting in an early conversation I understand it's 10 years old I'm not expecting to be Immaculate he said but it does look like it's in good condition and and I said yeah it is and i' done him another video so now he's saying the cars had obvious paint workor he says it's obvious even the driver can spot it well I spoke to Adrian afterwards he said he made no comment about it at all he said no it's obvious there's been paintwork done and I think he said it was the rear passenger door and he said and the boot lid is also rusting let's just take a quick look at this a second now I just want to recap exactly what he said he said is it's obvious that the door has been painted it's full of filler full of mud he said and it's been badly painted and you could see it so let's go up super close because again those you watch the channel know that I do paint cars myself and normally if there's cars I'd paint I'll spot it I'll spot it straight away so here is the rear passenger door on this side I don't actually recall which one it was they said now if we're looking down here we can see the reflection shows no lumps or bumps there's no sanding marks in the paint at all it is all in good condition so it can't be that door so if we go around to this door let's have a look at this one again we look at the door here I cannot see now the orange peel is slightly greater on this door than it is on the other door I'd say yeah I'd say possibly there's orange peel but there is absolutely no no sign of any sanding marks but there's absolutely no sign of any sanding marks or filler maybe that is ever so slightly ever so slightly duller than maybe than the other side but this is the level of video I did you know go and watch my video on my channel you'll see this is the level of video I did for the customer so can I categorically say that door's never had paint no but would I ever say to someone I can guarantee you the car has never had paint I'd never say that if a condition of sale on this vehicle was it'd never had paint at 10 years old I'd have said no I can't sell you the car because there's cars sitting on four quarts that a year old have had paint right rusty boot let's have a look at that here we go right so admittedly I don't think I'd spotted these before but you've got a stone chip there you see that's just being touched in couple of stone chips have been touched in there if you look along the edge of the boot here that is not a rusty boot that is a couple of stone chips on a 10-year-old car comment down below I think this is utterly ridiculous I honestly think it is and this is the problem you have with people and used cars the way he approached me at first was why you know this car's had paint why have you not told me seriously you walk around this car you video this car there is no way you're going to say specifically it's had paint on that door if that is the door we're talking about I'm assuming that's the door we're talking about versus the others and to expect a car this age has never had any pain it's utterly utterly ridiculous he was on the phone saying well you know I spent good money on it and I can't afford to be then having to have the door painted and the boot painted I'm like what are you talking about if you had those things painted and you took the car into a supermarket car park tomorrow you'd end up with more chips and it's I don't I don't know I'm just comment down below maybe I'm being unreasonable I just think this is utterly ridiculous now here in lies the problem with distant selling cars so the law says that he can return that car for any reason whatsoever it doesn't even have to give a reason within 14 days because the law treats this sale this distance sale of this car the same as if you bought a pair of socks off of Amazon you come you don't like the look of them you send them back now the buyer is responsible for the transport to get the vehicle back to me but they can they have to be refunded in full the invoice they've paid so if you've put the delivery on your invoice for this car so say this car was what was it £9,000 and you had £500 to get it delivered to London 95 Grand if he returns the car you have to refund 9 half Grand which means you are £500 down on this car straight away because he's decided he doesn't like that stone chip on the boot now your car hasn't gone up £500 in value so that's £500 you have to eat and a lot of these cars that could possibly be after all of your costs the only margin you've got in the vehicle now I to now I totally understand the law is there to protect Rogue sellers that tell somebody they're having something they've not but in this scenario I don't see where you going to find a better condition 2013 Ford Focus estate you've had a couple of videos walk around videos in detail you haven't said if you'd said to me like I said can you guarantee me this car has no stone chips has never had paint if I'd have said it's never it's got no stone chips it's never had paint and it arrived then you'd have a right to return it but that isn't part that wasn't what we agreed as part of the sale now I'm lucky because I told him I don't do distance selling I don't deliver cars to people so he paid Adrian directly himself to have the car delivered there was never any delivery fees on my invoice whatsoever all I have to do is refund the value of the vehicle now I can't make any deductions at all because he didn't put any miles on the car he sent it straight back so I'm not legally I can't even I can't hold his deposit even though I had the carot specifically for him I can't withhold any monies obviously people like to have a brand new Mt on the car for themselves when they buy it hopefully we'll sell this one straight away with the new M on it already but no I can't recoup any monies at all from this whole Fiasco when as far as I'm concerned I've done Absolut nothing wrong had I paid Adrian for the delivery and that had been on the invoice of the customer customer as I said I would have been down that money and I'm afraid guys this is why when it comes to car dealers so many you meet Are No Nonsense No Frills uh take me as I am kind of attitude because this does happen an awful lot I'm afraid you get these kind of things happening a lot in the used car game because no one is responsible for any of their own decisions anymore in this world it's always somebody else's fault and somebody else's problem you can buy anything you like at any time for any reason and it's somebody else's job to mop up after you if you decide you change your mind this along with people dumping bad part exes on you with the problems without telling you and going after you for warranty claims of things that are totally unreasonable for cars of the age they're the things that make you as a car dealer just become quite hard hardened and quite tough and I'm afraid I'm now taking that line you know I've had I've done uh a few distant sales in my time and theyve always been a pain in the ass um I've lost money on them before with transport costs coming back because it was on the invoice I'm not doing it anymore I am not doing it anymore if you C if you want a car one of my cars you need to come on site you need to look at yourself I'm not going to I don't want to assume what is it going through your mind at all you need to come here you need to look it over you need to sign the paperwork here and say you're happy with the condition of the vehicle simply not worth the hassle anymore again I totally agree that if I'd miss sold the vehicle in some way if the car had a made your fault then you know yes I need to take a financial hit but as far as I'm concerned this car is exactly as described in fact probably better than described it is in fantastic condition you won't find one with a better service history I don't think you're going to find a 20131 in better condition than this and like I say I bent over backwards to make sure he knew exactly what he was getting when he was let down by his delivery companies I helped him out I helped him sort out the finance but again that's the lesson to all of you out there when you do too much for a sale that's the ones that always bite you in the bum anyway as always like I say the purpose of these videos is to give those that have an interest an insight into what it is like really working in the car trade now before everybody gets in the comment of course we make money selling cars that's why we do it we just as I want to point out as always don't make the fortunes people think we do and get away with blue murder this idea that dealers manag to sell faulty cars and just pocket a bucket load of cash is utterly ridiculous when you got people returning cars for a stone chip but as always get into the comments I will be interested in your feedback we got another viewing in this car but luckily I left the AutoTrader advert up I didn't end it which meant I would have had to repay for another advert now off the back of that I have had another customer who has an interest and is's going to come and physically see the car at this site on Thursday so fingers crossed we get it turn around quickly cuz I really don't want that fresh mot ticking away also I can't fit the car back inside now so I don't want getting dirty and and messy again and I also don't want to be continuously cleaning it over and over so fingers crossed that sale go through so often in this game you'll find the second sale touchwood and I should touchwood by I say this is smooth as you like and it ends up being a lot easier than the first one you worked harder to get in I'm going to say again as well anything that's got anything a little bit special about it it's a little bit nicer it does cause you more hassles I'm going to tell you again that the easiest cars to sell are the sub five grand small CC petrol car because they are people's everyday transport it's not this emotional purchase they're not investing in something that they think is uh some special kind of a car or whatever they want a car they can get in get to work safely and every day reliable it's going to start from it's going to be economical and they're just they're just they're just sorry to say it better people to do business with anyway as always massive thanks
