I Was There When: Derek Jeter 3000

I was there and when Derek Jeter got his 3,000th hit I was there for Derek Jeter's 3000th hit I was there when Jeter hit number 3000 I was there when Derek Jeter had his 3,000 pick I was there for Derek Jeter's 3000th hit a home run off of David Price I was there for my 3,000 hit on July 9th 2011 everybody was waiting for the three thousand we didn't know when it was coming everybody was kind of you know waiting for 3000 hit the calm just kept gathering hits and gathering it's year after year he kept getting 200 hits and next thing you know is he's closing in on 3000 we all knew it was coming and you always know Derek's gonna do something amazing he definitely wanted to get it over with there was so much attention to it something that Derek really never wanted to focus on was himself and what he was trying to accomplish it was not a team goal for him to get 3,000 hit and he was uncomfortable in that situation I think that tells you a lot about him because he was so much about team and so humble that it was tough for him as in his whole career Derek handled that last week the true professional person and human being that he is his day begins with knowing that he's going to face one of the top left-handed pitchers in the league and David Price you know I just remember being on the top step and everybody's getting excited New Jersey alakazoo to rematch up with David Christ and all of a sudden boom turn the 3000 hit into a home run off of a stud picture like that vintage Derek Jeter for him to step out there and hit a home run curveball three two calendars I didn't know whether to run out on the field or wait for them in the dugout for it to be a home run that would that was terrific I think it was just pretty cool you know to see him hit the home run the left field everybody was excited it was just naturally action to go out and greet at my home plate I see the crowd erupted and know how happy everyone was in the stands it was an amazing feeling I never see get is so happy I was so happy for him and happy just to be part of it I just thought it was pretty fitting the way that it happened I would expect anything less more he has a player sometimes for doing things in an unusual way you sure did that day I mean the only other 3000th hit by a player that was a home run was his former teammate Wade Boggs one of my most memorable days as he ank you and I say that because I had an opportunity to share that memory with Navy Band I couldn't imagine doing anything else one two he has just the game of games a day that ended up getting five hits Derrick's day that day was incredible five four five hitting a home run first 3000th hit we win the game that was a pretty special day having covered this guy since he first came to spring training with the Yankees so many years ago I felt like I was a uncle it's been a way other than a writer sitting and watching this this game unfold as almost a grandfather does some of these guys are a father figure to some of these guys you sit back and you watch them enjoy and just sit back and you go son good job way to go and I came back down to the clubhouse positioned myself and waited for Derek to walk through it look at that man he said I kind of had a feeling you'd be here and I said well I just wanted to congratulate I saw the first and I was glad to see the 3000th and I know it's not the last I'm not sure you could script that head any better than what happened I mean I'm getting chills right now just thinking about it because it was such an incredible event to witness for him to hit a bottom the left was it was pretty cool it was definitely one of the highlights of my career it just was a terrific day it was a great day for the fans that had happened in New York I think was was very special although wherever you get your 3,000 hit that's that's a great thing I think of drgr I think of winning then he does everything it takes to be a winner that day the way he handled things that way and oppression is simple he was just great to see it's not about him it's about his team winning championships I always say I'm playing in the powerful moment of the baseball history because they would Mariano today we nd Jorge and Jeter to have a Derek Jeter in your organization and only be with one organization should feel very fortunate and blessed that Derek Jeter was he you
