hi I'm Donna Jordan from Jordan Fabrics today I'm going to show you how to make a quilt called entwined and this is from the quilt Factory Deb Grogan designed it and it's got all kinds of interesting shapes in it and I've got everything we need to get started this is a layer cake pattern and I've picked one out from Moda Fabrics called chickadee so let's take a look at all the different prints I I think they're nice and colorful which is what will look good in the patchwork so we've got lots of different colors here lots of different stripes and flowers and all we need for the patchwork is the layer cake and a background and I'm going to use this nice off-white one our first move is to cut up the layer cake squares and it's not my pattern so I can't give you all the sizes but Deb grogan's patterns are always very easy to follow and they tell you exactly what cuts to make good foreign all the layer cake squares are cut and I went ahead and cut the background as well the next step is to make half Square triangles with these squares now since there's so many here's what I do when I have a lot that are going to be done using the same method I will lay out quite a few squares here on my table because I need to mark across the back of these on the diagonal so it helps if you put them all over your cutting board then get your ruler and I'm going to draw a faint line from corner to corner here but if there's a lot of them laid out I don't have to move the ruler very much they aren't exactly lined up they're just kind of lined up so I'm just going to adjust the ruler every time and draw on the back of all of these I've got all the squares here at the machine so I'm going to take printed square and I'm going to put a background square right on top of it and then the line is pretty faint but I'm going to stitch a quarter inch away from this on both sides my presser foot is slightly narrower than a quarter inch so I'm going to stitch down here and then turn it around and if you're not sure exactly how big your seam allowance is here you can always check it after you're done so I have a little tape measure right here so I'm just going to fold this in half and I know my thread is light but I can put my drawn line right there and I can see that those are a quarter inch away so it's always a good idea to check before you start a huge stack of sewing to make sure you are using an accurate quarter inch seam allowance once those are all stitched up we need to cut them in half right across that line we drew earlier I like to lay a whole bunch out again on the table because it just seems to save a lot of time so I've got all the lines going up you got to leave a little space between them but when you do this it really saves quite a bit of time so I only have to make a cut here then I just move this a little bit if that's in the way give yourself a little more space because there's quite a few of them and we want to do them as quickly as possible I always seem to be not in a rush but I want to get to the next quilt project the next step is to iron all of these open we want to iron towards the darker side I know these are both kind of light but we're going to iron towards the print so put the solid down on your ironing board and then peel it open and the reason I'm kind of peeling it is because I want that seam to stay straight and if you're not careful you can distort it as you open it so I usually use a dry iron and then add a little bit of steam so every time light fabric down peel it open press a little bit with your fingers so that seam stays nice and straight and the last step is to cut off these little corner pieces these are called dog ears and I use scissors and just trim them both off and that reduces the bulk in our patchwork done and I'm going to I'm going to 12 of the ease and I'm going to try to pick a variety of colors they don't have to all be different but let's try to get 12 different ones and then we need two rectangles and we'll get two different colors there also the first step is to take two half Square triangles and we're going to sew them into pairs so for this first set I've got the dark or the prints together and I'm leaning over that way and I'm going to stitch here foreign next we need two more and the darks are going to be touching again but it's leaning the opposite direction so we'll sew these together and the last thing we need is a pair with both lights together and we need to make four of these pairs so there's the first and I'm just going to chain piece all of these [Music] and there's the fourth one I'm going to take these over to the ironing board before we put the block together so we can get those seams nice and flat these blocks with the print in the middle I'm putting the seam allowance to the left on both of them foreign the ones that have the light in the middle two of them are going to go to the left and the other two are going to go to the right and that way when I put everything together and have our seams nesting here's what the block looks like you will have to check the pattern I'm not doing this from memory I did look at where everything went so I've got this seam allowance is going that way so I picked let's pick a block here this one is also going that way so I'm just going to pick a different one where that seam goes up there we go so that seam allowance is down that seam allowance is up then we've got another plain piece that goes here and one of these like this and I think I'm going to put one with the seam allowance down this one goes here and then we've got one going like that and one going like that so it's kind of a puzzle piece can't really tell what the quilt's going to look like yet but we're going to sew all four of these and then all four of these and then we'll put both halves together I'm going to stack this bottom row up a little bit so it won't move while I Stitch the top we'll put these two pieces together first so all we have to line up is that very center intersection right there and you can see the seams are going in opposite directions makes it very easy to get them to match foreign this row to the right and we'll do that with this whole top row so now this came from here I'm just going to add that next piece there's the fourth and final piece in that first row thank you now I'm going to use the exact same procedure to make the bottom row but I'm going to press all the seams to the left which is the opposite direction there's the last piece on that row now when we put these rows together top seam allowances are going that way the bottom seam allowances are going that way makes it much easier to match and get everything laying nice and flat oops came unthreaded that is the whole first block I need to make 16 of these so I'm going to go ahead and get those all stitched up I've got the blocks all done and we're ready to lay them out and see if the pattern lives up to its name intertwined so every block gets laid exactly the same way we're not twisting anything we're not turning once I get them all laid out I will probably trade some around to make sure I get a nice balance of colors but I can already see these Pathways showing up it's very very fun there's the last two blocks and the colors are pretty well balanced even without me moving anything around so all I have to do now is Stitch the 16 blocks together then there's a couple of borders there's a very small border first and I've used this purple one that we've got in the patchwork and then I'm using this for the outside border because it's cut larger I think it's cut four and a half inches that's a nice large scale print then I can get it loaded onto the quilting machine now that the quilt is loaded on the machine we need to pick a thread color I've decided I'm going to use something pretty light because I don't want the thread showing much on the white and any of these will work I don't think there's a wrong choice they're all going to fade in to that white background the blue is nice because we do have a blue border the pink is nice and soft and we've got so many pretty flowers here that will work now I often like to see how the threads are going to look on the back and this is what I put on the back of the quilt so these will show a little on the back and that's good I like the quilting to show on the back side so let's see I think this blue green I think I'm gonna go with the blue green it looks great on the back shows a little bit doesn't show much here but we'll show a tiny bit and that'll look really good for the quilting pattern I've got to go with something that has flowers this is called wild roses I like it because it's nice and dense and even but you can see the flowers and leaves very clearly thank you foreign the entwined quilt is all done and now you can really see these long pieces of Patchwork they're around each one of the rectangles it's very very cool I was a little worried when I got started that some of my prints might be too light and wouldn't give enough contrast to make the pattern show up but it really shows up very nicely even with all these varieties of colors the quilting with that light blue thread looks really good I can't see it at all on top of the patchwork but it makes a nice shadow effect here in the light areas and on the back side I used thread color that's slightly lighter than the blue here look you can see all those flowers it looks very nice one of the best things about this pattern is that it uses one whole layer cake with almost zero waste and we only used a yard and three quarters of the white background and then just added those borders around the edge now the pattern does call for you to put some cornerstones in the four corners of the outside border here but my border was a big large floral so I decided to not do that on my version but you certainly could add those if you like it's 76 by 76 so it's a nice big throw size and of course if you wanted to make it bigger you can use more layer cake squares thank you so much for watching our video today we hope you enjoyed it we sure appreciate you spending
