i can't do this i can't do this anymore this can't happen nope it's not happening right now hey guys editing ava here how you doing i'm sorry about this and i'm also here to apologize for the horrible lighting that was in this video um i filmed it at about like 2 p.m this week and the lighting was just not it um and i i would refilm it i would redo it but i honestly don't have the time like i genuinely i would but i don't have the time so uh enjoy a low quality video of me ranting about one of the worst books i've ever read in my life uh again sorry about the lighting i will do better okay thanks hey hi hello uh my name is ava welcome back to my autobiography this is my booktube channel where we talk about all things bookish both good and bad today we're going to be talking about the bad the first book i read in december um i started reading it in november but i kind of it kind of traveled on to december was a very popular thriller novel that is very well received across the bookish community in general i heard about it on tick tock um because that's kind of where i am this is like where i started off in the bookish community my friend loved it so i decided to give it a shot it was horrible the book that i read was as you could probably tell from the title of this video we were liars by e lockhart god just to give you a brief uh just a briefing on what the book is about in case you don't know it is about this girl named cadence her family owns a private island off the coast of martha's vineyard or something like that just somewhere somewhere near there some are rich somewhere fancy and she goes there every summer with her family so you can already tell this is going to be a bland-ass story something happened when she was 15 on the island that she cannot remember and nobody is telling her no one will tell her what happened to her and they all say you have to figure it out on your own you have to realize what happened on your own so she goes through the entire summer uh trying to figure out what happened to her and she eventually finds out and that's the book that's what the plot is just so now you're all caught up now we could talk about the atrocity that was this thriller okay i made notes what we're gonna be talking about in this video today is the characters and character development the plot and the plot twist i would talk about the setting but the setting is pretty straightforward the setting is just uh basically on an island that off the coast of martha's vineyard i don't remember the name of the island because i honestly couldn't care enough the spoilers will be happening about halfway through the video so i'll let you know before then uh i'll put the time stamp here i guess i can do that is that a thing i'll figure it out i'll see what i can do first we'll be talking about the characters and the character development so the main character is her name is cadence she goes by katie she has selective amnesia because of something that happened to her when she was 15 and she doesn't know what happened to her she doesn't recall anything that happened to her when she was 15 all she knows is that something happened some kind of head trauma or something that made her forget overall she's pretty she's a pretty bland main character um she doesn't really contribute that much she doesn't have much of a personality if i might add she's very spoiled she's her mother's daughter and she is our main character i guess even though she's probably one of the most boring main characters i've read about in a very long time next we have gat gat is the love interest of the story he is the nephew of cadence's aunt's husband if there is a word for that i will put it there they are not related but like he got married into the family or something so they have this whole like little romance but gat is one of the more toxic love interests i've come upon he is in a relationship pretty much the entire first summer that they met and probably for longer with this chick from the city called raquel and katie is like i'm so mad at him for like cheating on me and not telling me about her but i still love him she's in love with him the entire time basically even though he does all this to her it's not ideal but i mean katie you do you girl i don't know gatt is a mess he doesn't know what he wants and he is the only minority in the entire book uh he's indian american so yikes next we have mirren miren is the best friend type she is katie's cousin uh they're very alike they do everything together um mirren is very bland she i think she has the most personality out of any of the of the cousins of the liars as they call themselves um she has the most personality but at the same time like there's not that much there i don't know if i'm being honest i feel like the mothers were better developed than any of the liars but that's just my opinion is it though and next we have johnny johnny is another cousin he's the fourth liar uh the most unimportant i might add he kind of does nothing to contribute to the plot he's just kind of there he kind of just reminds me of a golden retriever which we will come back to later in this video later in the plot uh golden retrievers show up he's just kind of like a big dumb dog boy doesn't really know or understand much of anything he doesn't really he says some poignant things here and there but he doesn't add anything to the plot he's just a third person to that it's it's like a bigger friend group cousin group whatever and finally we have who i consider to be a main character uh cadence's mom her name is penny she's referenced to as mummy because it's in katie's point of view um which i thought was kind of odd because this is america like mummy's an english term so i don't know that was interesting to me she's just kind of like an emotionally closed-off like i don't really know how else to describe her she's very into her money she's very into appearances she doesn't do much for katie it's very clear that she loves katie because katie's her only daughter um but other than that she's just kind of very involved in her inheritance and it's not super like it's not the best parenting um i might add next we'll talk about the plot there wasn't any that's the whole section that's all i wrote there wasn't any then i wrote four privileged kids got to frolic on a private island for 250 pages that was the entire plot the underlying plot was that katie was trying to figure out what had happened to her but she wasn't really making an effort to find out like she was just kind of going about her day and just doing things and asking people here and there what had happened to her but nobody would really talk to her up front like it was just the same cycle she's like i wonder if this person can help me and then she goes up to them and says hey can you help me and they say i'm not supposed to talk about that and then they walk away and then she's like darn and then she goes up to another person like hey can you help me and it just keeps going on and on and on until finally she remembers and it is uh mind numbing i can't okay there wasn't a plot that's all i gotta say next plot twist is coming now so you can leave here if you haven't read the book or if you're wanting to read the book there's going to be spoilers here i'm going to talk about the plot twist which is a highly anticipated part of the book yeah cool and if you're here to stay stick around because i don't know i don't know what this is i don't know what's happening anyway the plot twist good lord okay so so there's five parts to the book and we don't really find out fully what happened to katie during the fifth part of the book so i have to kind of struggle through all of these pages of nonsense to get to the finale and i was mostly reading it a because my best friend really loved it and she said that it's such it's so worth reading and it's just so good and i would love it and b because i'd seen it online so much like on goodreads on tick tock on like some on booktube not really it's mainly on tick tock so i read it and i was so bored but i kept pushing through because i wanted to know what had happened to her so i finally got there and i was like huh i guessed that i made a pr i made a list of predictions that i sent to my friend and on the top of the list of predictions it said they were dead the whole time and that is exactly what happened it is revealed at the very end of the book that um katie and the liars uh gat mirren and johnny all set the main house on the island on fire and the dogs were trapped in it and that was really sad their golden retrievers two of them were trapped in the house was really sad but then she remembers that the other three liars were also trapped in the house and this entire time this entire summer she's been interacting with ghosts the ghosts of her cousins and of her first love which i guess is kind of sad but i was so out of touch with all of the characters that i honestly couldn't care less that sounds so mean but they just meant so little to me that it didn't it they didn't matter i sound like such a monster so i don't i didn't care if they lived or died but i was sad that they died like do you get do you under do you kind of get my logic is coming from also just reading the words that e lockhart was writing like she's a good writer i'll give her that she knows how to pull on heart strings i was reading it i was thinking of losses that i've endured in my life friendship losses like family losses deaths whatever um and it was sad it was the way that she wrote it was really sad and i did like the ending i'll give her that but it was just so predictable i don't understand i've seen so many people post like this book made me break down in a parking lot and sit on the ground like i was sitting in my bed and i was like huh and then i turned the page it just it wasn't anything special if i'm being completely honest so i want to read to you my my goodreads review because i thought it was really funny but i couldn't read it before because it has some spoilers in it here's my review this book made my brain melt out of my skull i genuinely don't understand how people enjoy reading it i picked this up because i bought it because it was popular on tick tock big mistake and my friend really loved it so i thought it couldn't hurt it hurt a lot i didn't connect with any of the characters whatsoever miran and johnny especially were barely developed i felt like the mothers were better developed than the main characters the only characters i genuinely gave a about were the dogs and they died in a fire gat was toxic as all hell and cadence was unreliable and if i'm being honest annoying well i generally like an unreliable narrator katie made me want to rip my eyes out every other page i'm so positive part 5 was in my opinion the only well-written section of the book it did make me sad not because i sympathize with the characters but because it reminded me of losses i've endured in my own life lockhart knows how to pull on heartstrings i'll give her that that ending raised my rating half of a star in conclusion i hate it here yes so i gave the book one and a half stars um i was going to read it one but then the ending raised it half of a star because i like the ending like i felt like it was it was well-rounded wow predictable it was written well uh everything else was just bland as hell it was it was i can't i'm so angry i can't even form words i felt like it was just a very generic mystery like i was expecting something really groundbreaking maybe that's part of the reason why i didn't like it so much because i went in expecting so much of it and i really didn't get that but i mean i don't know i'd like to bring your attention to the fact that i'm wearing a t-shirt with two penguins on top of a water bottle because after reading the atrocity that was this book i think that it's important to bring some good into the world like i will raise awareness by wearing this and i will also raise awareness by saying how awful this book was so there you go i've contributed for the day that's all i have for today um this was a mess uh i'm kind of all over the place today if you couldn't tell there's a lot happening in my life right now i'm being honest uh college stuff and everything so i'll be attempting to post regularly also thank you so much for three subscribers like that i did not mean that to sound sarcastic i genuine thank you so much just genuinely i didn't think this anything was gonna come out of this and i did not expect to get even a single subscriber this quickly it's been like a week or something like that's insane thank you so much let me know if you liked this book genuinely i i know this is an unpopular opinion i want to know your opinion as well so yeah let me know i don't have anything else to say i'm reading a good book right now actually which i needed yeah i'm reading this book words on bathroom walls by julia walton i love it i love it i'm so happy that i like a book now i like it hooray i will see you guys with my next video i have no idea what it's going to be i plan these out like 12 hours ahead of when i film them so yeah bye
