I Made My Childhood Dream Come True in Trackmania

when i was young growing up i had one of these a city carpet with things like a police station a hospital and an airport as an adult it might not look like much but as a kid i could get lost in this world for hours driving around with all my toy cars exploring the city i have very fond memories of this carpet and looking back it might be one of the things that eventually led me to loving track mania as i grew older though my imagination became less and less vivid and i lost interest in both toy cars and the carpet but in track mania the possibilities are almost endless for what you can create with the in-game map editor so a few weeks ago i got the idea to rebuild this carpet city in track mania to see if i could relive some of my nostalgic memories live in 3d this is the story of how i realized my childhood dream in trackmania [Music] first of all i wanted the track to be as close as possible to a one-to-one recreation of the carpet so i decided to start with drawing the track route in an advanced track route planning tool microsoft paint then i had to think of a route that would feel natural to drive in the game while also getting to explore most of the city after thinking for a bit i decided to go for a route that would start on the parking lot then make its way behind the gas station and the post office and head towards the hospital it will then exit the roundabout towards the fire station and take this small road around the police station before going back through the roundabout then it would continue past the post office in the church before drifting around the second smaller roundabout and going through the gas station and then it would head out towards the left i'd now reach the edge of the carpet but since the pattern on the carpet is a repeating one i allowed myself some creative freedom by finding a good way to stitch everything together without repeating buildings so the road would continue down past the airport driving down the runway before lifting off and since the parking lot and the hospital on the original carpet was a repetition i decided to move the beachy area here for the landing zone then the track would continue up to the city again through the police station and over this sandy trail past the hospital before returning to the parking lot where the journey started seemed good now for actually building the thing i quickly started building everything i'd sketched out and paint and tried to keep the proportions between the buildings and turns as accurate as possible while also making sure the lines were natural to drive and that the track would be fun to play on its own after a few hours this is what i had a full bare bones version of the track i'll be honest and say i didn't feel too good about how i was going so far you could barely make out the skeleton of the carpet but the actual body and soul of it was missing but this is where my secret weapon comes into play in order to make this track come alive i contacted age tim h one of the absolute best scenery builders in track mania known for making tracks so stunning they could look like a video game and though the carpet didn't look like much yet tim told me not to worry and quickly started working on the scenery after a few weeks of eagerly waiting i got a notification on discord the track was finally ready it was time to revisit some of my fond childhood memories almost 15 years later i felt like a kid on christmas eve ready to play the track right away but i thought better off it and decided to wait until the evening so i could experience it together with my live stream and this is how it went okay i'm excited i'm excited i'm very excited so not only did he build a map oh my god not only did he build the carpet he put it inside a bedroom that's so wild that is so so wild let's take it for a spin let's take it for a spin [Music] dude dead no no no this is beautiful oh my god this is beautiful wow that is so sick through the gas station okay past the airport there's a poster this is too wild this is actually too wild onto the path here [Music] and finish wow stop dude stop is this dude see what's over here really really holy come on dude we have enough butter in norway you didn't have to do that we have we're fine on butter sisters alright so interesting um midnight metropolis hylus that's the man on my wall wow no dude i'm stunned under the bed books what was this [Music] the blind boys magazine front page aged you went above and beyond then you went above and beyond wow i'm actually speechless like if you compare this to that bare bones track i just showed you think about the effort like the difference from what i sent him to what he made here this is like turning you know dirt into diamonds that's actually beautiful imagine you're a kid right and you're just sitting in your your bedroom playing on that carpet isn't this what it felt like doesn't this capture that like childlike joy of just driving around the carpet feeling like you're actually in the city you're that car on the carpet just like you see your entire room around you you're just lost in this world that's such an incredible feeling i i don't even know what to say can you escape the carpet oh i think you can yeah you could probably uh just explore the entire thing if you want to right you can [Music] now this looks weird man it's like a toy car on the run go under the door let me try is through a gap who would ever want to leave this place though oh okay how many of you had a carpet like this kid i feel like it's a thing of our generation like maybe almost everyone have this we have to get a good time with this i i cannot you know it's like the signature on the mona lisa has to be perfect someone makes a mona lisa you're not just gonna like botch the signature i gotta take my time with this one to make sure that's good all the time that skin this is fun [Music] okay speed make it good up that one go [Music] that was really nice [Music] oh yeah yeah we'll take that we'll take that that is good enough that's a good enough author time i feel that sufficient the perfect signature tim had blown away my wildest expectations and i almost started tearing up playing the track not only had he created the carpet but he created an entire bedroom around it making it feel incredibly real as if you were really in the car on the carpet exploring the city on your bedroom floor he had also added many easter eggs around in the room like posters and pictures and magazines and it was all just amazing talking about the building process tim said that the track consists of over 200 unique custom blocks but the scale of it is ridiculous if you try to build a track by hand in the track mania editor it will take you weeks the bedroom walls floor and roof alone make up 146 000 blocks and the volume of the room is 3.3 million track media blocks in size working in a 3d graphics program tim managed to make all of this in just about 30 hours of work creating the bedroom the carpet and all the objects in 3ds max and then importing them into trackmania as custom items and with that he managed to make what was just a skeleton of a track come to life this track truly brought back some very fond memories of my childhood and if you want to experience it for yourself i'll leave a link to the track in the
