Look! Bob Ross! What's up? How are you? Who are you? Me? I am Antonio García Villarán What are you doing? I am painting cool trees Listen, I have come from the future and I have made an Art review about you. I have critized your paintings What do you think? About me? That's right, that's right. How do you carry criticism? I don't mind. I just have happy accidents. Pay attention We cannot deny that Bob Ross is an Internet celebrity Mainly, on Youtube. He has infinity of videos teaching how to paint snowy mountains, small trees, rocks, lakes... And, he has created the illusion of making people think they are artists for painting these things Also, Bob Ross is the King of Memes There are Bob Ross memes everywhere There is also a website where you can see the entire work made by Bob Ross Let's take a look at it right now This is the website. Here we can see every little painting by Bob Ross They are little landscapes. Very nice. If you click on any of them, the picture quality is not very good but You can see the colors he used, for example, this yellow Pay attention to this. It goes to a website where you can buy the paintings with the little Bob Ross face on them But there is something else This has left me quite amazed There is a Bob Ross' product which is incredible You can buy a body-sized Bob Ross made of cardboard, with his small squirrel You can buy this to celebrate a birthday Bob Ross-style There are dolls with big heads of Bob Ross There are blankets with his face on it saying that "You can do anything you want to do" This is your world! There are even socks with the little Bob Ross head on them I love them. I think I am going to buy a few of these. They are great. Come on. T-shirts. Of course. And the one I like the most is this one: A waffle maker with the Bob Ross face So you can eat Bob Ross' head. Don't tell me it isn't great. Well, what do you think? Look what you have done with all this merchandising Very nice What was his technique like? It was wet-on-wet. Wet-on-wet. Wet-on-wet People think this style of painting is a Bob Ross' invention. Not at all. This is something ancient. This is "Alla prima"(Italian) This style of painting has been used by artists like Brueghel, Caravaggio, Rubens, El Greco and even Velázquez This is something very common. It consists on painting when the paint hasn't been dried yet That way you can fade and blade colors He truly made this technique popular with his TV show However, there is something very important here: he was not the first one Does it sound familiar to you the name of Bill Alexander? It isn't, right? It didn't sound familiar to me either He was the teacher of Boss Ross. He started doing the same thing as Bob Ross also on television but much earlier than he did. Well, before Bob Ross started doing it in the 70s. His professor taught him everything he knew. Yes, he had German origins However, Bill Alexander also had his issues Because, on one hand, he said he was the one who came up with the wet-on-wet technique Listen up, Bill, you haven't come up with that. He declared exactly as follows: "I invented wet-on-wet." "I taught him and he is copying it" "I am not upset because he has betrayed me but because he thinks he is better than me" I mean any of them is better than the other. What they both made is a type of craftwork. They are fireworks. They are little tricks. Neither Bob Ross does it better than Bill Alexander either the other way around. For example, how do they do to paint a sky? They take the color directly from the palette, in this case, white or blue and they spread the color And I ask myself: By any chance does the sky has the same color? Isn't it true that depending on time and how the atmosphere looks like that the sky has many shades? Bob Ross, as well as his teacher, used two or three elements to paint We can find among them: crosses, shading, zizzag to make trees... And something I cannot stand: those points he made again and again to get light on trees, pressing with the brush on the canvas. Bob Ross, stop it. So tacky. So tacky!!! Bob Ross's technique was as simple as limited. He did artworks very similar one to another. Soulless artworks, they look like plastic I've already said this on the video where I talked about Hitler's paintings For me, Bob Ross didn't know how to paint I mean, you...what we call "painting" you don't do it very well, you know it, don't you? Are you aware or not? -"Bob Ross": I paint good.
-Antonio: You don't. You don't know how to paint.
-"Bob Ross": People tell me that. People are really happy And why? Why did he only paint mountains, landscapes, little trees, rocks? He never did...well, he did just once a human figure He didn't paint faces. He wasn't interested in human shape Or in other words; he didn't know how to do it His instructor even told him to leave portraits to other painter What a good advice (irony). That's the worst thing one can say He told him to paint trees because his heart was there Yes!! But hear me out Bob Ross: if you don't know how to draw a portrait then you don't know how to draw. I'm telling you this straight away Antonio: What is this? What are these colors?
"Bob Ross": This is a palette. This is the Crimson. The colors I always use. I don't use others because I don't know others. I mean, there's nothing wrong with it because all this can be learnt. But it seems he didn't want to. He didn't want to learn or he couldn't. Chill out dude, I am not going to get mad. I only have happy accidents Also, what Bob Ross painted had a trick behind cameras Don't believe he painted all these paintings that fast or that he made them on the spot In 2014, this statistic website brought out the following information: "The Joy of Painting", the title already has a lot of to say about It was painted 403 times. Bob Ross only painted 381 times What happened in the rest of episodes? They were painted by male guests or female ones. Do you know what he painted the most? Well, little trees. Little trees. The 91% of his paintings had trees Also, these paintings did not have just one little tree. Most times, he painted at least another one next to it. He said little trees had little friends I mean,we have to love him. He is so loveable Trees cannot be alone. That's not possible. Pay attention to this piece of information: From all these 381 paintingse he only did a human figure It is this one of here He didn't even paint a front shot The person is on a tree and on his back It is the silhouette of a lonely cowboy I have observed it a lot and it looks like a rabbit to me It is more like a rabbit humanoid rather than a cowboy Now I'm thinking maybe his paintings were full of people. However, people were behind trees, hidden behind rocks, diving in those lakes or behind mountains...I don't know! Another important piece of information is that he didn't paint by memory. Not at all. In every of his shows there were three paintings. The one he painted in front of the camera and the one we all saw A second one he had painted previously and he had it in front on him to copy his own painting And a third one which was more finished (with final touches) and this was the one he showed at the end and he also used it for details and close-ups. This means he did 1143 paintings during the time his show lasted on BBS. So...if he didn't paint that good and he always painted almost the same. Which is the reason of his success? Well, let me tell you His success is, in a way, on his outfit. I mean, his hair was wonderful. It became something iconic Although I guess it was a happy accident. The reason of this hairstyle was he wanted to save some when he first started. He did that permanent wave, it became the trademark of the show so he couldn't get a haircut. And there statements of him saying he hated that hairstyle. He didn't like having his hair that way. What a jail, right? His 'fro became his business' logo Are you aware of the empire they have built on at your expense? Listen to this What about his voice? What do you say about his ASMR voice? That whispered voice which seemed from someone very approachable and calm He even stated they received reviews from people saying they slept better after watching the show Maybe they meant they fell asleep while watching the show I mean, with that voice leaves you feeling conked out Also, Bob Ross was already a youtuber before Youtube existed Let's see: he did ASMR, he did collabs on his "channel" or his show He almost always appeared with a small pet, a little squirrel. He loved squirrels Now Youtubers appear with their cats or their hairless cats Kubin He always repeated things on his videos, he repeated the same things And of course, people kept that in their heads And all this with the fact he was like very friendly, right? But, there is another thing, Bob Ross was not always that friendly If you look back at his life, he spent half of his life enlisted in the Military Who could have thought that? He enlisted in the Air Force when he was 18. Yes? Our friend Bob was during 20 years doing military service and he rose to the rank of master sergeant He stated that during the army he sometimes shouted people and treated them harshly From now on you will be the clumsy recruit Sir yes sir! He said he didn't stop shouting and giving orders in the army Do I seem a smart ass to you, clumsy recruit? Do I seem funny to you? He ordered people, for instance, to clean bathrooms one! cleaning rooms two! And he even said he shouted people on the face if they were late for work So... three! He not always was that angel, celestial human being painting on PBS I have told you to choke not to do it myself So, what happened here? Well, when he finished military service he promised not to scream never again. He transformed Well and you may be thinking Bob Ross had to be immensely rich Because he did plenty of shows and he became really successful Listen, he was not. I didn't get paid at all It seems he didn't earn absolutely anything with that show What happened? You are saying you didn't get paid for anything you did I didn't. I sold books and I taught some courses It was a TV channel from public television and I don't know what he had to sign but his income didn't come from there We already know he earned money did three-four courses teaching his technique in different places He sold books and of course he sold some of his paintings Stingy! Stingy! No man! Why? I wonder now that he is so well-known on Youtube and he has a channel called "Bob Ross" where all those dividends go. I hope they are for his family. or maybe it goes to his inhirants. If not this would be... Youtube. Take care of your creators or at least their heirs. But I don't care. I don't make mistakes, right? I only have happy accidents. Happy accidents Happy accidents He is crazy I don't think Bob Ross painting are from great interest However, if you are a big fan and you want one of his paintings to say "I have a landscape of Alaska by Bob Ross" In that case you will have to fork some money out Bob Ross paintings are sold for more than 10.000 $ Another important piece of information is that the majority of canvases he painted on the show, stayed on the show. It is also known that the majority of these pieces of work were auctioned and sold by the show How did Bob Ross respond to this? Well, as he was a happy person he said that good for them and he was happy for that. Happy accidents Bob Ross did his artwork as if it was a recipe He just did variations of the same "dish" I don't consider it art of high quality level I don't consider it as something which should be at museums. Not at all. For me, it is something closer to craftwork Something similar to what people making bracelets do or similar to the ones doing pottery Or also these people which are on the streets making lunar landscapes using sprays and lids What do you want me to tell you? For me, Bob Ross' paintings are decorative pieces It reminds me to the ones grandmothers living in villages have in their living-room I mean, those landscapes with deers on them They even have they same quality of porcelain figures I don't know if you remember but during the 70s and 80s it became quite fashionable porcelain dogs Clowns made of porcelain to By the way, at the present time, I like them. They are very kitsch but they have something Let's clear this out: I don't hate Bob Ross I would like to emphasize that what he did was to introduce people to the world of painting And I consider that's a good thing itself Getting people to not being afraid at painting it's amazing However, losing the fear of painting is one thing and another quite different is to think you are an artist for painting a little Bob Ross landscape What can I say? I have to admit his shows seem self-help shows I honestly think he helped a lot of people I find wonderful his attitude on camera: calmed, measuring his words...I mean, maybe he was too soft but why is going to be that a bad thing? For me Bob Ross is pure therapy. It doesn't mind if he used paint or another thing to do it. I agree with it. I am sure there is people thankful for his videos Not only directly but also indirectly And, I am going to tell you something: I declare myself a great Bob Ross fan. What can I say? I am a Bob Ross' fan. Fan. Maybe I even buy his socks Also, do not forget that he never had mistakes, only happy accidents. Unfortunately, he left us in 1995 when he was 52 years old. Very young. What would have been of him if he was active today? ** His youtube channel will be on fire, of course. I mean it is already on fire He passed away just when he was exploiting as the icon of the period. But what we can't do?. We love you, Bob Ross. Bob Ross, say goodbye! Goodbye!
Thank you for going to the Joy of Painting,my show. It doesn't exist anymore. Or maybe it does exist on Youtube, something it didn't existed when I was alive. Anyway, I hope you like it as some self-help, right? That's right because it is not that useful to learn how to paint. See you!!
