Oh my, I am riding a police bike Yes, great great great! Good morning Internet! It is 08:30 in the morning and welcome to the channel So 08:30, it is about to get light now Oh today is going to be such an exciting day I barely slept last night I was just nervous So what I am going to do today If you have been following this new season then you know that this season is all about exploring the Dutch motorcycle scene but also improving my skills so that when I can start riding again on the big adventure I am going to be a better rider that is the idea, at least but I thought if I really want to become a better rider there is only really one place in the Netherlands to go and that is the place where they teach the best of the best and it is at the Police Academy So I asked the Police Academy if I could join them for a day to learn new skills and they said yes So that is where I am going now, I am going to Lelystad and in Lelystad is one of their training facilities It's about 50 minutes riding So I am now riding actually through the city in a different way than I normally do I am not following that little bridge The weather is also pretty crap to be honest but hey that is the way it is, it is winter time But honestly I don't really care so much about the weather This is day is going to be an incredible, I think definitely unforgettable day regardless of the weather I am now just standing on the side of the highway here because the police is actually coming from the same way as me So I am just waiting here and then we can ride together to the training center so There he is I'm just trying to do what the second rider is doing When he moves in, I move in I have no idea if I am supposed to do that, but okay So we are now inside the training center and I see a lot of bikes We use these bikes in the first week of the riders training To train basic motorcycle skills Riding 8 figures, slalom Stepping on and off the bike, walking with the bike, some motorcycle gymnastics. Standing on the saddle, climbing on the tank And then you also got some motocross bikes? What do you use these for? Besides working with these bikes, we also train them on these. Trial, motocross In what year did they use these? Do you know? I think.. looking at the bike.. in the 80's, early 80's My Dad used to be a motorcycle police, in Rotterdam And I have pictures that he is in the sidecar with a long baton during riots To give you and ideas of the track We are over here at the moment, just out of the frame And this is the big loop, which we are going to ride in a second So we will enter the loop over there Some nice cornering over here And a straight end where later today we will do braking exercises at high speed So today I am joining the training programme here at the Police Academy It's a three week basic course where we are training colleagues who want to become motor cops And does it matter how much motorcycle experience they have when they start? No in the beginning we see big differences in experiences Some already have their motorcycle license for years, other just start out What we want to see is that they manage the skill level that is necessary at the end of the course But all students are super enthusiastic and driven so as a teacher that is a great job to have! Is this group now at the end of the three-week training? Or did they just begin? So it's a 3-week training and we are now at the beginning of week 2. In the first week, they had their training on the CB bikes and motocross bikes I just showed you Now we are back here in the second week to do the exercises from last week at a higher level Now we are back here in the second week to do the exercises from last week at a higher level So now it's up to you to join them on that level - Exciting! So this is the general police bike right? That you are riding on? Yes, this is the standard police bike... the heavy police bike This is the 1250?
- Yes, 1250 CC We also have a light police bike, that's a Yamaha MT-07, which they use in the cities Cause what's all of this? This is the radio, the mobile phone And the actual mobile phone is located over here This is just the control panel of the mobile phone We got an entire array of blue lights Stop sign at the front Ah yes here: stop, police! We've got orange lights.. over here, underneath the helmet Stop sign at the back side So we can have people follow us Ah that's this one "Follow" And "Stop"... eventually And when you get a call for help - and you need to ride somewhere How does a call like that come in? How does that work? Attached to my helmet, there is a cable.. pretty old school Which you plug into the bike here And inside the helmet, there is a microphone And does it automatically indicate in your navigation where you need to go? No, on the motorcycles we don't have that, only on the police cars So you first need to manually enter the address first? - Yes Unless you know where it is of course, because in Rotterdam you know every single street Yes, I know it like the back of my hand And what things go in these cases? I'll show you the side Fire extinguisher, the necessary rain suit, first aid kit Not a lot of special things, oh here we've got glass hammer and a torch How much does this bike weigh?
- Around 300 kilograms Well you are going to experience this soon because you are going to ride this bike We are going to look for a suitable bike for you, we have a few different ones riding around here Super exciting! I'm looking forward to it! We are going to see what happens! - Yes let's do it! First we are going to check out the big loop ride? Then I ride on my own bike Yes we are going to see what my colleagues are doing, which exercises they are doing And then we are going to join my students They are now training with my colleague Dennis, who I am training to become an instructor So it's also his first time with the students alone Oh so that's also exciting for him then
- It's exciting for you, for him, for all of us! Well... I'm ready for it! - Saddle up - Yes So we are going to kind of have a small round the track so I kind of know how it looks like Mark gave me a radio if you can see it so hopefully I can hear him when he tries to talk to me Let's see if that works Do you always ride on the same motorcycle? - That's my bike It's really nice to always have your own bike - Yeah you have your own stuff on it You should be able to hear me now
- Yes! Great! Just follow me We teach our students here: Keep it safe Follow the indicated instruction sites So don't go crazy on the tracks by yourself We really cannot have accidents here We are now entering the big loop We are first going to ride one loop In a bit, when we come out of the long corner, you will see they are doing braking exercises So make sure we don't pass them at high speed Not too fast because they are training here So the colleagues are working here to practice braking in the corner First one of the teachers gives a demonstration To show them how it looks like Next they are going to practice this from the basics So we are braking while in a corner, using ABS if we have to That's not the goal, but if it happens, it happens On the left hand side, we have the cross terrain, the off-road terrain We are now taking a right turn here to have a look at the practice terrain, the play-ground This is so cool You are about to go and do that too, do you like that? This is the motorcycle practise plateau We are mainly training low-speed handling here Purely the feeling, there also, from throttle, brake, clutch Balancing on the motorcycle.. it's not about speed here It's not about how fast they can go around the pins or over the obstacles This is purely about the feeling of using the clutch, throttle And every now and then, somebody falls over, but that's part of the game Nice! That's quite steep to be honest.. And just flying down is not the point It's much better when you control the brakes while riding down These BMW motorcycles all have an integral braking system That means that when you use the front brake, it automatically also uses the rear brake So you will hardly see them using their foot brake High speed braking, we just take the front brake Because it will automatically take the rear brake with it It doesn't work the other way around though So in which case would you then additionally brake with the foot brake? Or you hardly use that? You don't really.. When do I use my rear brake? Only with these sharp and slow turns When I ride an 8 figure here, or slalom, I use my rear brake It's different when you are riding off-road, then you use your foot brake Right, because then you can slip a little When you block your front wheel while off-roading, then you are on the ground Yes, I saw that Here it's different, because Because you are shifting the axel load from neutral to the front wheel So when you use the brake there, you are braking on the wheel which has the biggest weight on So chances that it will block or starts to slip are minimal Look, if you brake fully and suddenly, you will go into ABS And you will ride down on ABS and you will be down faster than you expected It's better to ride down when braking then in ABS Because the ABS is constantly stopping, going, stopping, going Fun! - FUN! Shall we go and have a look at the braking in the corner exercise?
- Yes, sure! This is the parcour, where later on we will do an agility parcour at speed Under time pressure, I should say So the students have an agility parcour here which they need to finish under 2 minutes 40 And the time is not most important, it's manageable It's mostly about 'are you able to handle the motorcycle' when there is some pressure on it Not sure what we are going to do now I think he is going to give me the explanation on the braking in the corner technique Which sounds terrifying You will get the lowered seat on my motorcycle And then you are going to ride on my bike And you are going to brake in the corner - Okay... I will explain you first...
-How to do it.. You ride one loop in front..? - And you follow me And then I say, Let's go And then we do one more loop like that? - Yes, just ride a few loops, get used to the bike Yeah, okay, precisely Oh dear I will lower this for you Now the seat is... ooohhh fancy...okay Seat is on the lowest position So you should be able to reach The side standard is so far to the front! the side standard is very much to the front, it's difficult to reach.. yes now it's in Is it in neutral? Yes..okay, start the bike There are too many buttons here What did you say? - Too many buttons I don't know where to look! It's really something else, a boxer engine You will notice that you're thinking, I'm going to stall But especially at low revs, it's powerful So don't think, I'm opening the throttle completely No because then.... okay Let's wait for them, then I will ride in front and you follow me Mark is going to ride on my very dirty Ronin this happened this morning, somehow And I am riding on this one These boots are not suitable for this bike.. because I'm hitting this with my boot! Just give it a go - Yeah, I think I can just reach You go in front, yes My boots are very much in the way Oh man, what a machine, what a machine I cannot change gear Oh this is really annoying hey Oh my I am riding a police bike! This is really crazy! Well, I have to say this thing is extremely comfortable I can hardly switch gear
- It's like a tractor right? Yeah, the problem is my boots, sticking out here I can't reach it Then I will put you on a different bike Which one? That... On the R... - Yeah We are going to change bikes now because I have this There is this thing here and it just hits my boots so I cannot get to the gear It's on the lowest position That thing goes like crazy - It's a tractor right? - Yeah bizarre No, I don't have that problem on this bike We'll do another loop, so that you can get used to this bike Then we stop here and I will give you instructions about braking in the corner Now I am going to try this one How do you start this thing? There is no key Oh this is very different This is a different riding position, I am much more forward, like more sporty What are we going to do?
- We are going to brake in corners How are you going to do this? You knew we were going to do this? Did you think about it? I am thinking front brake - Front brake Considering this motorcycle, with the integral braking system, would the rear brake mean anything? Ah yes, all the bikes have this integral braking system? This type of motorcycle, yes So you don't need to use the rear brake And that results into the fact that your right leg can just stay where it is So you can keep balancing your motorcycle in the right way, with your body So you keep yourself occupied with the bike as little as possible Let's first try it, riding around 50 -60 kilometers per hour.. Is that comfortable? Then I will give you a stop sign This is quite an obvious sign, brake. What's next? I think, slowly brake So don't slam the brakes suddenly, but slowly increase the braking Exactly because what happens if I slam the brakes? Then it will go into ABS - Exactly I'm in the corner, I brake... (Sign) I pull the brakes, I notice the bike is lifting itself up I stop braking..
- No, you hold the brakes I keep on braking, straight and then I look that way Watch the side line Keep in mind that from the moment you start braking, the bike will lift itself up Once you stop, the bike needs to be fully up, or you will fall down Alright, well let's do it! Alright, yes? I'm going! Okay, there we go Fifty You see where you end up? - Yes! From here you watch where you are going Don't look into the direction of that upcoming truck Or that motorcyclist that is coming through the corner trying to be cool Then you will collide, I don't want to hit them So you come from there, you did that nicely Then you will start to brake and you notice the bike lifts itself up And then came the moment where you were like: ok, what's next? In that moment you need to make sure you are moving this way Try it now while going 60, 70 kilometers/hour. You will notice braking distance will be longer That way you will end up more to the side of the road Here we go again, faster , 70 I was switching down gear too - You shouldn't do that!! - No, no And you are trying to push the bike to the side, don't do that It's just a matter of leaning in, lift up and move away But I think, before I brake, I'm already lifting up the bike a little bit
-Yes, you are cheating - Yes I shouldn't do that I'll just let you ride a couple of loops, but I won't give you the stop sign each sign. It will be unexpected then Yes, great, great, great! Just put the bike there - Sorry?
- Just put the bike there The brakes are so incredible smooth on this bike Yes, yes, it all works electronically, you know The throttle too. You only have to move it a little bit to go from zero to full throttle It rides fantastically! - Great right? What did you think of the exercise?
- It was really great! I'm going to take you to the G-Street, that is the practice area with the parcour under time pressure The students are now working over there Cool You are also going to ride it - Yes! Within 2 minutes and 40 seconds please - Oh - It's manageable Stop the bike Get off the bike Do you know what's so cool? - Tell me You are the first one that I do this exercise with! - Really? Oh yeah!
