one of the hardest things about being a father is learning to pick your battles it's not easy there's no instruction sheet that comes with being a father you have to learn as you go [Music] now we should have been testing last week but it's not like billy hasn't been working hard we've all been working hard but there's other people that have been working just as hard and maybe harder perry stanley has busted our ass twice in a row at marion and both times we had the better lane he showed up friday night at marion testing like we should have been testing and he couldn't even get down the track friday night he took the car home worked all night had a whole rear end out of that car tore apart came back and won the whole event on the other hand we had to come home and find out what in the hell was wrong with this truck in all honesty we should have known what was wrong with that truck by wednesday of last week but we didn't go testing and we paid the price for it rather than harp on the kids i decided we just all go out to lunch today together you got a chauffeur today yeah you got gaffed last night before oh my god now i may look and seem like a grumpy old bastard but the priorities that i have at my age are just not quite the same priorities that my kids have in the middle of the night while they're playing video games my focus is on what's causing this problem with this truck so first thing today i'm on the phone with nlr i'm on the phone with jose from forest inductions and they led me in the direction that i needed to look to find out what is going on with this truck i mean it's just like i mean this is blowing it out the main function of it should be to pull vacuum to pull it closed right vacuum pulls them open you let off the gas the vacuum increases it pulls them open spring pressure keeps them closed and the vacuum up well spring pressure holds them closed initially and then boost pressure holds them closed against boost so that's what i was telling you a few weeks ago that when it's sitting there idling right and you set the trans brake and you come up on boost there's no there's no air pressure against them you see what i mean it comes up slowly but when you're going down the track and you pedal that thing real quick and you've got boost pressure in this charge pipe 20 or 30 pounds of boost pressure in that charge pipe and they they open under vacuum and then when they have to go close the spring pressure in these things isn't enough to close them and then you've got this massive boost leak that they're you know they're leaking can't close fast enough i mean it's not only a boost leak it's a vacuum leak as well when it's idle and that's why i had to turn the idle mixture screws out when we were up there the other night i mean that's terrible it's sealing in here that's terrible why don't you go ahead and take those off and we'll take them apart what we found was the blow-off valves that open when you close the throttle the blow-off valves are intended to open and discharge boost pressure out the side of the uh the cold side plumbing and keep excessive boost pressure from bending the throttle blades in the carburetor or in the throttle body or if your fuel injected whatever and they use a spring tension to initially close the blow-off valve and then they use intake manifold pressure to hold them shut against the boost pressure that's in the system the problem is ours were as you could see in the video were leaking like a sieve they were in terrible condition and we had no idea they still operated and as long as the uh truck was idling and then you bring it up on boost like you normally do with the trans brake we had no problem um the problem is is when you've got 20 or 30 pounds of boost pressure in that charge pipe and you close them and then have to open them back up really quick the spring isn't in good enough condition to close them and then as bad as they were leaking um the manifold pressure couldn't get ahead of them and hold the piston shut against the o-ring or against the flange and so basically what had happened was when billy peddled that truck in the middle of that wheel stand uh the blowout blow off valves open boost pressure escaped and then when he got back on the gas the blow-off valves never fully closed so the turbos are trying to make boost the controller is commanding dome pressure and the turbos are spooling the beat hell but there's such a gaping hole in the charge pipe that the truck wouldn't build more than 17 pounds of boost now in my video from last week i made mention that i was more confident in the tune-up in this truck than i had been in a long long time and rightfully so what we didn't realize was that at this point in time billy had a co2 line to one of the wastegates that was damaged he made his first pass right off the trailer with a damaged co2 line to one of the wastegates and on only 20 pounds of boost the truck made its fastest ever off the trailer pass at marion county [Music] i was expecting a little bit more boost for some reason we put air air on instead of the co2 i think it's making a little less boost than what i command but it still went a really good number so you had to lift too didn't you no i just short shifted it oh i never lifted it oh yeah i left on like nine pounds brought in 20 by 200 feet i short shifted it and it went back down to 17 pounds and went right to 20 right at the end and uh that's the fastest it's ever been on 20 pounds going into round two we both had a feeling that something wasn't quite right i had to turn the idle mixture screws out to fatten up the carburetor in the pits before we headed to the lanes and i quickly realized why it melted a vacuum line going to the wastegate it's probably gonna make more boost now so i'm gonna turn it down a little that's why i wasn't making boost second round billy was the first pair out and the truck was at the ready line and we were just waiting for them to call us to the starting line for round two and that's when he decided when he pulled up there he decided he'd better pull the hood off and look at this thing close because he knew it was idling way too high and he knew that i had to turn the idle mixture screws out we both knew in the back of our mind there was something not right but it was getting worse and as he pulled up to the ready line he could tell there was absolutely a problem so he pulls the hood off of it and we start looking at all the vacuum and co2 lines on the truck and he notices that the one to the passenger side wastegate the line that goes from the from the vacuum block to the wastegate is cut it's almost cut in half now we're sitting at the ready line it's second round and uh we've got jeff thomas and it's a pretty fast nitrous mustang you know we definitely knew that we were going to have to do better than what we had uh to feel like we had a chance at jeff so we didn't have any extras extra push lock line or co2 line however i knew that when i put that air tank in the bed of the truck last week that i always route the lines with a little extra line so that there's some give and take in case something gets pulled or tugged on it doesn't pull the line tight so billy ran back the trailer grabbed some tools and i shortened the line from the tank into the cab cut the excess off and used the excess to repair the co2 line up front barely in time to put the hood back on and for him to gather his thoughts and realize i've got a major problem now this is why the truck wasn't making as much boost if he had left the tune up in it that he had in it it probably would have wheel stood even worse than what was about to happen in round three billy put the same exact tune up in it for round two that he used in round one and the truck picked up four to five miles an hour in the back half jeff had some problems with his car and the nitrous never came on so that brings us to round three and unfortunately we draw one of our friends perry stanley who has an extremely fast big block twin turbo nova that uh had beaten us the last time we were at uh marion actually that was a time we the truck ran out of turbo we barely turned it up to run perry and it ran out of turbo so we lost that one and as we're pulling up there keep in mind that we are very good friends with perry i feel we are very good friends with perry perry in my opinion is a very respectable person he's a very hard worker we have nothing but mutual respect for one another however somebody in the crowd is chanting something about nut swingers and and whoever this clown is has nothing to do with perry has nothing to do with his wife and his boy has nothing to do with him okay uh i'm actually helping line perry up i'm helping perry do his burnout and backing him up because there is a mutual respect and um unfortunately whoever this was got under billy's skin by yelling where's the nut huggers and this that and the other the guy was just up there trying to rile up some side bits trying to bet against billy so billy decides he's going to take a shot at the tree and he's going to put this thing to breast once and for all and he damn near dead [Music] they got under billy's skin just enough to make him pull a trick out of his hat and he almost pulled this deal off unfortunately the truck got up a little bit too high and when he peddled it it never came back he was very pissed now i could see he was upset but i didn't realize why he was so upset we lose all the time it was the comments made about the nut huggers and the side bits and all that that got under his skin and of course i was up there helping perry do his burnout line him up so i didn't hear or see any of it so i didn't understand why he was so mad when i got back but i finally figured it out it's part of the game guys you can't let that get under your skin so anyway that's what happened and today of course we dug into this thing and found out these blow-off valves were the cause of the problem there why the engine wouldn't come back under boost so we dialed up chad roberts up at on three performance who has bailed us out i don't know how many times god bless him and uh he did it again today he said bring the cold side up uh i'll put some new blow-off valves in this thing we'll get it all situated i'll turn it around you'll have it back tomorrow so me and billy grab the cold side off the s10 and we head up there and i have a little conversation with him about how pissed i was this morning when i watched his video and he blames that carburetor because we get this all the time every five comments it's time for efi it's time for this it's time for that we could have put efi on it and if we wouldn't change those blow-off valves it would've made a damn bit of difference [Music] so i woke up this morning i watched your video you really pissed me off news flash right because you got out of the truck because you got out of the truck you like probably something with that carburetor i don't know if it's a carburetor issue when it's up like that literally lit let me ask you something junior do you think any of that fuel was dribbling out of those boosters when it was on 20 pounds of boost probably making 1200 to the wheels climbing the ring gear at 200 feet and dragging the bumper was that the carburetor's fault you think there was any fuel coming out of them boosters then or just when it's standing straight up and down are you oh my god it's probably not that it's probably just the blowout it's definitely the bill so we make our way up to sunbury to see chad roberts and bob morrison and get their take on this situation maybe we can get bob to clean up your uh your uh your uh it had good gas here and then i ran out of gas right here that's what happens when your welder runs out of gas in a yeah he is he's mad as hell look at him he's mad as hell shuts up immediately yeah no there he is he's still mad he's still mad he's still a man [Laughter] i used to have a bunch of pressure trying to do it yeah but now it's like can you see it yeah i'll go show you ours versus that so chad and bob both agreed after looking at these completely junk used up wore out overheated blow-off valve that that is most assuredly the reason this thing wouldn't come back under boost after billy peddled it on that wheelie so it wouldn't have made any difference we could have put ten thousand dollars worth of fuel injection on this thing and had we not changed those two blow-off valves it wouldn't have made a damn bit of difference we get this crap every time something goes wrong everybody blames the carburetor wrong again [Music] there's denny on his hands and knees yep buffing the 55. you don't still smoke do you oh what the hell's matter oh my lord
