I Gave My Prius Nitrous, and The Engine EXPLODED! Fast and Furious Fail

let's me you need some nitrous better not leave and button whoa oh Jesus hello welcome to who V's garage and apparently it's bringing your kid to work to him because my daughter Ellie is here she just graduated from kindergarten the other day congratulations Ellie and her summer program doesn't start until next week so she's with me today it's daddy dick here in this video and I told Ellie we were making a video about the Prius and she didn't even remember this car right no you don't remember this car and that's okay I've forgotten about this car I'm sure most of you have forgotten about this car but I bought it a little over a year ago for only $1500 with a dead hybrid battery I got a bunch of replacement cells to rebuild the battery pack myself and this Prius was back in business but I wasn't done yet I decided to give it a fast and furious theme well well not at first at first I wanted to make the Prius cool so I did a custom interior TVs lowered it Michelin tires custom wheels but then I decided it needed to be fast and furious so I got the orange paint job to pull my man finger just like the Supra from the Fast and Furious and then I added nitrous this was all about six months ago and I haven't done anything the nitrous tank is installed I push a button I switch it on and it goes but I never filled the tank with nitrous the last time I've driven this cars over six months ago during my bachelor party which was a lot of fun this was the backup car we brought on a trailer so if one of my friends cars broke like my friend Bob with his Lotus then he got to drive the Prius on the pig trail this great twisty turny windy road that we chose to go drive on for my bachelor party it was tons of fun and since the Prius got back from that it really hasn't moved and actually it doesn't start the battery is dead again but not the main battery but the normal 12-volt little car battery it's are you bored okay she's fine it's a normal battery it's a little smaller 12-volt battery that is completely dead so the car wouldn't start I'm a little scared to jumpstart a Prius so I've had the trickle charger on it for the last few hours and hopefully it turns on do you think it'll turn on Ellie you think it'll fire up I think so it's a Toyota so let's see I won't bump into you okay so far so good we have power key goes in things and bones it's live Eliot runs yes well that was a lot easier than I thought way easier it started right up I'll wait for the battery to charge a little bit and then we'll go get some nitrous or this thing and actually now I think about it I don't know where to go get nitrous in Wichita Kansas so I'm gonna have to do some googling while the battery is charging but at least she runs again okay Ellie I found someone that sells nitrous it's actually a Ford dealer but it's way out west but at least we can fill up that bottle right next to your head oh don't worry nitrous is a fluid in our gas I don't know in movies it makes the cars go really fast it's used for the plot when you push a button and then you pass cars and also it explodes but they really don't explode nitrous oxide it cools the air it makes it more dense and cooler denser air makes a car go faster much faster hopefully it doesn't stress this Prius engine though because I have no idea how the priest is going to react to nitrous life if it will blow up I I don't know but we don't have to worry about that bottle exploding next to your head I know that I'm not worried about that I've been driven this thing in a long time forgotten how much attention this think it's where everybody's looking at it and laughing I mean I get a lot of attention and say the rolls-royce of the McLaren but it's different it's not people going has he tried by alright good thing you can go up to the parts people and say I like some nitrous please le don't hold it by the net I don't know I learned it from king of the hill and handling propane and propane accessories grabbing food - and then the megalomart exploded wow that's a random memory you need some nitrous ok the nitrous is full we can go [Music] no no no no no hey no don't want to drop it we do not want to drop the nitrous all right I'm just gonna make sure it doesn't leak alright yeah but better not leak [Music] what the hell that's cold all right we might have issues with this fitting here maybe it's not supposed to be finger tight all right well we'll go home and I'll tighten it properly and here we are three days later and it is not stopped raining I want to push this button so bad but it will not stop raining it rained out the drag strip for me to do a quarter-mile time with the Prius it's rained out me being able to just drive it and push the button a normal pavement and now I'm leaving on a nine-day trip tomorrow and it's still raining and I can't wait I have to push the button I have to push the button ok I've downloaded a velocimeter that measures zero to 60 in quarter-mile time I'm on this closed Road and I'm going to get a control first for this Prius just normally I'm not going to push the button yet because I don't want to do it after I push the button in case I blow up the motor so here is a normal run in my Prius three two one go or a 30 we're at 40 finally hit 60 and the velocity meter laughs that I downloaded it didn't work so it's raining the app isn't working I should probably abandon this video but I have to know if the button works and the flight I'm going to Europe to the Monaco Grand Prix the flight leaves in like three hours so I have to do it so there's knowing to be no statistical data on wet roads in pouring rain because it won't suffer a ting but I don't care I am pushing this button I've got to push it so let's turn on the nos yeah all right it's open I'm hitting that button and I'm gonna floor it and then I'm going to push the red button and we'll see what happens I'm gonna wait till I'm underway just like a fast and furious here we go and button whoa oh Jesus oh I just blew the motor I just completely blew the motor oh my lord I push the button and a horrible noise came out from the engine and it went bang a big bang and we've got engine problem low oil pressure I just blew this engine by pushing the button for one second amateurs don't use nitrous oxide you'll blow yourself to pieces uh-huh so the question is will this thing limp in battery mode to somewhere where I can leave it but we're already losing the battery Oh knee up okay this is it this is it oh no okay I'm just gonna put it here I'm just gonna put it here Oh No well that's the nice thing about having a hybrid is you have a little bit of powdery power when you blow your motor with nitrous to you uh what am I gonna do now because I don't have time to call triple-a oh wow there's oil there's oil pulling out it felt like a rod went through the block and there's just oil pouring out of this car enough to make a little rainbow trail going down the road here this is definitely the dumbest thing I've ever done so there's anybody else in the world dumber than me that thinks they need to put nitrous on their Prius don't it'll just kill it I can't call my wife to come pick me up because she left her phone at work and her friends taking it to the airport to meet her at the airport so I can't call her for a ride even though she's two miles down the road so I'm going to have to abandon the car and do an uber well at least it quit raining it did quit raining what a cruel cruel into this Prius or is it I kind of feel like I have to fix it because that was a really horrible thing to do to it one second on nitrous and it exploded violently hopefully the uber will let me go for a ride to see what I threw onto the road thank you for watching and I know the comments section is going to be filled with how much I am a and I know I know this I know that I am I know howdy so I'm a dumb youtuber and I put nitrous on my Prius I pushed the button and it lasted one second and exploded on that road back there would you mind before we go in that direction I'm pretty sure I ran over one of my Pistons or a rod or something can we go check it out back that way yeah if you don't mind I can make all kinds of jokes right now yes I just don't think you're be sure so the other thing what we learned is just cuz you see stuff on YouTube maybe we should not do this your Prius you know it's dead yeah you're kidding me there's what what is this that's my oil filter and part of the block it just immediately shelled that and then I ran it over what are these we have another piece right here [Music] [Applause] and another piece here or more Oh yeah that's that's those are rocks so that's it all right well let me throw this off the road thank you very friendly uber driver oh it's all right I need to throw these bits off the road sue done poke somebody's tired [Music]

I bet these engines are only just as tought as they need to be, so I guess they might not handle much load over stock, making them stronger would only worsen their efficiency

This reminds me of a friend in California in the early 2000s, when everyone was into those pocket bikes with the weed-whacker motors. You couldn't "legally" (term used loosely because those bikes were never strictly speaking road legal in California anyway, but the laws were muddy enough that some folks genuinely believed that a 49cc motor was legal) put a bigger motor in, but you wanted more power, so what do you do?

The friend in question came up with a solution... take one of those pocket tire inflaters, powered by 12 gram co2 cartridges. Put a hose from where the schrader valve was into to the top of the carb, and then replace the co2 cartridge with a nitrous oxide cart from a whipped cream machine (iirc the cartridge sizes differ slightly so some modifications were required).

The idea was: hold the throttle open with one hand, squeeze the nitrous with the other, and enjoy the extra horsepower... I remain utterly unconvinced it actually generated any power (don't you need additional fuel with the nitrous?) but it destroyed a 2-stroke engine in pretty short order.
