hi guys welcome to another video i will show you how i transform this old art deco piece into a modern occasional table i don't actually know what to call this but um might be a table might be um a dressing table anyhow i started by removing the hardware and um this was a very dirty and very old piece like i said i found it by the dumpster so there was a lot of cleaning to do i didn't like the base so i decided to remove it and unfortunately it was just attached with some screws so i um removed them and with a little help from a hammer i took the base off and i just dusted it off and fixed the crack in the board with a little bit of glue i had those hairpin legs that i bought on facebook marketplace a while back and i didn't know what to do with them until now i decided to attach them just to see if it would actually look okay because i knew that it was a bit um unusual idea to combine art deco piece with hairpin legs but i touched him and i think she looked alright to me so i just went with it i used my little leaf blower to dust off the piece and then i use tsp cleaner which is a heavy duty cleaner to get rid of all of the um old dirt and um shininess and just to make sure that my um paint and my wallpaper would adhere properly to the surface because there was something attached on top of this piece i think it was a mirror there was a bit of um wood sticking out on the back of it and i just wanted to make it flush with the rest of this piece so i just used my jigsaw to cut it off and to basically make it look like it was meant to be this way once i've cut off those two pieces i use my sander to go over the entire surface and basically just scuff it up um before i went on without painting and also just remove some imperfections and dings and whatever was there that i wasn't happy with just to prep the surface for the next step there was a veneer on top of it and unfortunately there were just too many holes and pieces of veneer peeling off so i wasn't able to save it because i was thinking originally about a completely different design but um because of that i just decided to cover it all up i had to apply a little bit of wood filler to um a piece of veneer that was missing and then i just went over the drawers with my sander just to make sure that um they were all nice and clean as um there was some pan marks and um just all kinds of dirt i like to sand uh my drawers inside and outside um before i apply wax i know some people like to paint them or maybe put a liner inside but i just don't like to do it so um once i was done with the drawers i just went over all those um grooves with um sanding block and then i fixed um drawer stoppers that were missing and then i used my um other sander which is um shaped like a triangle to get into the corners and to um make sure it was all nice and tidy when that was finished i used some mineral spirits or white spirits depending on where you live in the world to clean the surface and to make sure it was ready for the next step instead of painting this piece i decided to use wallpaper and i found this really cool design that was um very typical for art deco period so i decided to apply it mostly everywhere with um pva glue and actually i thought this was a peel and stick wallpaper when i was um ordering it but unfortunately it wasn't so pva was the only glue that i had and it wasn't ideal because it's too thick and as you will see a bit later it was a struggle to get all the bubbles out and to make sure the wallpaper was flush with the surface but i guess that's just um what i had on hand so i just work with it if i ever have to do something like this again i'll make sure to use a different product something that can apply easily to the surface and um just make it easier to get rid of the bubbles as you can see i um decided to use a spray can just to um roll the bubbles out and to make sure that there was a nice and flat surface um i allowed the glue to dry and then i went over the piece with um with a utility knife to cut off or to trim off all the excess wallpaper and um when it was all dry i used a sanding block just to make the edges of the wallpaper flush with the wood it took me quite a long time to get all the bubbles out but yeah in the end it actually looked okay and um when that was all done i uh screwed the legs to two pieces of wood to make sure they don't move and then i just um clean them with sanding sponge and then i use some white spirit or mineral spirit to clean all the dust and then i used black spray paint that's very durable to give them a nice matte black um coat of paint i think i might have mentioned this in one of my videos that i like using furniture legs as a way to upgrade furniture quickly and cheaply this is also something that people who don't have much experience can use for a simple diy project um so i used um black enamel paint which is very doable so even if someone will scratch the legs they won't really be able to tell because the metal that i spray painted was already black i gave those legs a couple coats of paint and i just allowed them to dry for a few hours and then i used a sanding block and 180 grit sandpaper to go over all the edges of this um occasional table or whatever this is to make sure the um the wallpaper was not peeling off and was flush with um the wood um then i dusted it off and i grabbed some brushes and dixie bell paint in black that one is all in one paint so it's got a built-in primer and a clear coat and i just applied it to all those wooden bits that um you can see in the video just to make sure it was nicely blended with the wallpaper that's got a little black in it as well i applied two coats of paint and then i used some of my orange scented beeswax to apply to the exposed wood as well as the drawers and the inside of the piece to make sure that the drawers would slide in and out nicely and then i um attached the legs that were already dry back to um whatever we decide to call this whether it is an occasional table or a dressing table or um anything else i like applying orange centered wax to on the inside of the jaws because it just makes them smell nice when the person who's buying it opens um the drawers and also sometimes when you have old furniture it just helps to get rid of the um the smell because even if you wash the piece really well sometimes it does smell a bit funky so this just helps and then i just um clean the hardware using a sanding sponge the hardware wasn't anything special was just some metal not not brass so i just cleaned it to make sure that the wax would attach to it easily and i used um gold gilding wax just to give it a bit of um a blink and just to make it um look nicer i put it aside to dry and then i prepared the um the piece for a clear coat and i applied some tape with plastic to protect the legs that it was um sitting on and use some polyacrylic top coat this one is satin so it just it's got a little bit of shine and i just sprayed it on with my sprayer i allowed plenty of time in between for the top coat to dry as i didn't want the wallpaper to shrink because it did happen once in the past for me and then i just um applied the hardware back on and job done i just wanted to say thank you guys for watching my videos and please do subscribe and like the video if you enjoyed it and i will see you in the next one thank you [Music] [Music] you
