this video was sponsored by curiosity stream you dingus I won't pay it Alok I won't that - welcome back to the workshop it's fantastic to have you here if you know that line you know Alex Steele how's it going man pretty good how are you Bobby I'm doing fantastic you probably already know Alex but if you don't he's a blacksmith on YouTube does some amazing work it is incredible the kind of stuff he turns regular old steel into so you guys probably already got the idea that we're going to be kind of go I'm gonna go move I want to go back to sort of my roots where I carved a wood and knife out of a 2x4 we're gonna do something similar to that so does that sound cool it sounds dude first thing we need to do is go get a piece of wood so let's go get one let's do it okay [Music] all right we are here at the wood store we are going to try and find a piece of wood that will work well for our sward this is cedar I think it's like a Spanish cedar it says rough cedar whatever it's gonna work better than pine so we're gonna grab one of these bad boys oh yeah you're gonna want to fight a piece something that's fairly straight that is not riddled with knots because those are harder than be a lot harder to carve so we're just gonna try to find the one that will rule them all sorry all right I think we found our piece of wood it looks good are you having some trouble there here here I'll help am i helping you there god we did it together this is why I have him here to just help carry my stuff what are you doing with paper towels but paper towel fault thank you very much okay yeah that sounds good you look like you're over hot or like a wind-up toy it's alright man with a few years of constant practice exercise that's pretty good guys there's this weird British guy following me don't don't make eye contact let's see if I can lose him oh yeah that's pretty cool think that's the stuff you like the hand-hammered yep do you ever start the day with it's hammer time in touch deuce no Tuesdays Wednesdays Thursdays it's hammer time the rest of the time let's don't get to what hammer time every time that one and then the darker one oh by the way we're gonna be making the blade from 300 that Leonidas had let's do that Thank You O's what nice people yeah just bring that with you man you just take all that crap put it in the truck that'd be great having way too much fun there you go it's so hot yes all right we're done at the wood store let's go home is that sound all right sounds good I might have anyone sweating all right let's get this started [Music] we just grab that stuff I'll meet you inside just hurry up okay we've narrowed down our Patrick whatever this is the design this is the actual sword from the movie or it's the best representation that we can find of it we need to go back blow this thing up print it off on the printer that will be our template for the actual knife or the sword when we go to cut it out on the bane saw [Music] [Music] that's awesome now that we have our design printed out let's go ahead and put it on to our board that we bought earlier and cut it out on the bang saw I didn't know that theses was gonna be involved feces you said we're gonna put it on the bandsaw wait our piece is involved typically when you poop yes [Music] [Applause] [Music] okay now that we have the outline cut out I'm using the bandsaw to actually go back and do some basic shaping all right we're gonna use my janky Colonel Sanders set up perfect do you want a nice belt sander well yeah eventually I think I might know somebody who could hook you up you got me a belt sander dealer man got a belt sander doula oh yeah so now we're gonna take it thin out the blade some more smooth it make it straight before we carve some fun [Music] [Applause] whoops break out the MIG welder sometimes this happens but it's okay we're just gonna glue it back together is you won't see this is all gonna be painted let's continue good is used [Music] all right we're done with the basic shaping with the belt sander so it's freaking hot out here I think we need to take it on into the shed to finish it up and this is a great opportunity to say the line what line yes what the real douche I'm not gonna not say the line Bobby I'm gonna say the line yeah yes you're right uh I feel very uncomfortable right now as do I okay we're back in the shed it's a lot cooler in here we need to use the rotary cava to come in and basically like look here see how it's curved there that needs to be a nice sharp in and out so we're gonna use a bit like this this guy right here come back in that whole area right there clean up all these lines then we're gonna start rounding over things just refining the shape just a little Mole so let's do that y'all all right starting to clean up those inside corners trying to square those off and refine the outside shape both of us taking turns doing some carving refining the shape of the handle doing a little sanding on the handle there okay hey okay now we've got the sward a good portion of the way done Alec is a knife expert he's going to do sort of rough in of the would you call it spine it's like the opposite of a fuller which goes in the spine juts out and runs down the link that's to add rigidity and strength to the blade am i right I think that's about right I've made a bronze as I fosston before and they had a spine running down the center used to give it a little extra strength by having some material in the center my plan is we're gonna use this beautiful belt sander we're gonna come up and down like this maybe a little bit like this look it out sounds good to me now he is putting in that spine using the belt sander and we decided it was actually easier to go back with the rotary carver with this really big bull nose [ __ ] now using my scalpel to go back and just clean up those inside edges a little bit more Sun beam you could say that now the time is very right it's the right time it's the best time I'm trying to you know drop seeds that are priming people for the next step now I was not following that yes I agree I think it's time to put some primer on it then after that we're gonna paint it and then we're gonna wrap the handle with some leather so let's go prime this bad boy you doing your weird guy weird guy okay the primer is dry ish we're gonna try and paint it now with this hammered black paint to kind of give it that rustic Forge to look and yeah hopefully this doesn't suck you gotta mix your paint gently gently [Music] he looks just like it's folded Bobby I'm very impressed thank you I forged it myself all by myself I didn't have any help at all so it's completely a solo oh hey it's a forgery to me don't like it nope okay my name is blobby puke welcome to my channel so Alec what is the next step for up mr. Duke what we're gonna be doing is we decided we're gonna put ourselves a little leather cordage on the handle I do believe that's a good idea it's gonna be a real good time it's gonna look real good little rail or little rather laughs little barrel well here I'll show you the reason we're doing that see how it's got those little bumpy ridges and it slapped in rather so let's do that okay cutting off the end of the little leather strap at a diagonal super gluing it in place and then wrapping it around the entire length of the handle gluing it down and cutting off the other end and the reason for that is when we go back with the other thicker strip it will help add those extra ridges that are in the original sword once that's all wrapped on glue it back down and cut it off you can see Alec did an amazing job wrapping that handle it's real leather so it's like authentic now what we need to do is make this look like metal so what I'm gonna be doing is I'm gonna be mixing some paints I'm going to do this in two layers first thing I'm gonna do is I'm gonna mix not as super shiny silver with the dark color go over with a paper towel or maybe a towel and some brushes and kind of blot it on as the first layer and then the second layer is going to be just along this edge and I'm going to do a real bumpy and crude to look like it's a forged knife that then only has like the honed edge and if you look at pictures and stuff that's the way it looks you know what I love more than streams curiosity streams and how curious is it that curiosity stream is sponsoring today's video they have thousands of great documentaries ranging from science nature history technology and lifestyles featuring great hosts such as Stephen Paul King David Attenborough and many more all for only $2.99 a month and if you use code Bobby Duke arts at checkout your first month is free I'm currently watching digits a show hosted by Derek from veritasium in one of the episodes he interviews John Green to discuss YouTube and how the Internet has shaped our future you may not know this about me but I love watching documentaries I love nature I love science I love technology and I love educating myself so if you are like me you will love curiosity stream so if you want access to thousands of amazing documentaries for only $2.99 a month and I know you do click the link in the description use code Bobby Duke it check out and you will get your first month for free hey guys it's finished [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] thank you so much for making it to the end of the video I appreciate it and remember all you need is a chunk of wound some paint a little strip of leather and you can make this exact sword one day that's all this took do it now do it now you can do it I promise also go subscribe to Alex Steel's channel it's amazing if you like metalworking blacksmithing artistry jewelry making he is totally an artist but with metal so go check out his channel put a link in description I highly encourage you go check it out also it would really help me out if you guys would go and grab a wood shirt they are down in description as well come on gotta help a brother out wait emergency update I got glasses actually no that's not it I have a new t-shirt design that I just launched today it's in the description as well please go check it out it's amazing it's totally got that vaporware vibe I want that I think you guys will really love it I got it on all the stuff just like before so t-shirts hoodies mugs stickers all that good stuff go check it out ok ok bye dude thank you so much thank you so much this was so much fun and safe travels back to Montaigne thank you alright guys please do it no wait [Applause] my legs
