I’m crying again...

[Music] i'm not sad a lot i think because i drink so much coffee i get dehydrated and it makes my eyes water i know people think i'm crying all the time and he's not i'm not such a shame such a shame it is no no but he plays it works out doesn't cry he wasn't crying no it was midnight we were shooting at midnight because we were trying to rush to go to the airport in the morning which is reshoot the whole thing that's what i said i said re-shoot it but it played out everybody's like poor will oh god yes everybody's like poor will poor will poor whoa gotta make it serious not funny and i made it too serious i think i'm sad and they thought he was saying no it's like they love they love they sell some will whatever they love they sell some will whatever my becoming a mental health advocate stemmed from the trauma and loss i experienced after my dad died by suicide i experienced a serious low point in my life and i found that the most healing experience for me was committing to service around causes zach is on the board of bring change to mind a non-profit founded by glenn close that works to end the stigma and discrimination surrounding mental illness thanks to bring change to mind every year my siblings and i get to present the legacy of laughter award to an individual in entertainment we feel embodies the best sparks of dad still living and bringing joy but as family that gets asked about the word legacy a lot we decided that this year we'd like to honor one that was being built with kindness unity and love right in front of us this year we wanted to honor the entire smith family as individuals and as a whole for their long-standing and continued contributions to the world you've held ground-breaking open discussions about important topics like family career and mental health in a world that often expects silence from its most visible citizens your charitable acts are many and varied from feeding the homeless helping inner city youth programs fighting aids in south africa and bringing safe water to those who need it most and while doing all that you still manage to entertain and inspire millions with your talents through your films through your talk show through music laughter and your clear and vibrant family bond thank you to will and jada for your irreplaceable contributions to this industry the landscape of which would undoubtedly not have been the same without you but more than that thank you for also raising a second generation that is a true testament to you both in trey jayden and willow from one genie family to another thanks for sharing your phenomenal cosmic powers with the world so what's up jayden's not here jayden is certainly not here this is a clovid situation his covet test didn't come back and he doesn't want to be around anybody without it so where are you in the house darling this is gonna be the worst award accepting of a family ever so jayden is here okay so our family is being honored and we want to say thank you to to cody and and zelda and zach from one genie family to another it's one of the great joys for us as a family and a facetime to accept the robin williams legacy of laughter award using laughter as as a a force for good as a family you got it jaden yes thank you robin williams was an absolute master of human connection there's really nothing like laughing with someone when you get a joke with someone it is the fastest freeway out of being strangers there's really nothing like sharing a laugh that tears away all of the the ego people don't look good when they laugh it's like everything gets ripped apart and you're you're exposed to someone and what you think is funny and someone else who thinks that same thing is funny and you connect eyes in the middle of that space there really is nothing like that in in human connection he's back here he's backlit we need to get you to uh there you go how are you feeling oh jayden don't be sad the whole thing is about laughter apparently they met to send us the award and we were going to accept the award in person but because of kovid in the same way you couldn't be here because of govit the award couldn't be here because of kobe i just can't like i can't oh wait hold on so let's do this jaden use your face put your face closer to the camera and then we're gonna put the award under you like you're the award too okay cool this is cool all right see there it is wait hold on we can do that we can we can put that in there we can put that in there all right look at that so that's a little genie magic do you see how i made the connection between robin and robin williams playing the genie media playing the genie then i did that and then i said genie magic i thought it was great that was great that's very funny this family made a differently with this family happening you don't have to put shoes on either you can keep your shoes off because it's your house and you have pretty little feet thank you look at that they like little 10 little pieces of candy [Laughter] the hardest time i've laughed have always been with will great comedy has to have a component of love you can make somebody laugh you can be harsh and sharp or what have you but when you can make somebody laugh in a place of wanting to uplift them or make the world a better place that's a different kind of comedy robin you could tell that he loved people because this comedy was always based around joy this is a great honor that we we were honored as a as a family because of the the work that we do and that was one of the things you know with this family's had a lot of uh left oh you want them higher sorry there's been a lot of laughter in this house with uh robin williams trey was what flubber was oh that's crazy that he's impacted our lives all of us have been impacted by robin definitely he wanted you to laugh it's almost like he needed you to laugh and however brief the moment was he was always scanning for what is the interaction that the two of you could have that would be memorable and magical this family's had a lot of laughter and some hard times yeah and some hard times you know but i think that the the difficult conversations that we have are always cut with the the idea of laughter yeah you know and i think part of the the the focus that um as a family we've done around the ability to be able to talk wide open yeah everybody is struggling with their mind right and you know some are having more difficult times than others but to some degree we are all trying to figure out how to be in this world and how to manage our minds in this world how to balance our pain and how to balance our pain and i think i think part of the um it's just now i'm feeling weird and my shoulders starting to hurt but so i'm like ah this little phone i gotta get i gotta get in the gym to glenn close and williams family thank you what you've been doing with tens of thousands of high school kids across the country for the the past decade is so inspiring sometimes the biggest part of anyone's problem is you know finding a a safe place to be able to admit that you're struggling to be able to say that you have a problem from our family we are humbled deeply honored thank you so much thank you thank you thank you [Music] i see what you're saying about the shoulder and you're young and it should be burned right you know you
