hello everyone I'm Landon Tucker with my no you're charging and today we're taking a look at the difference between a full hybrid and a plug-in hybrid it's come along with me and let's examine what exactly the differences are for the purposes of today's video we've got a lexus RX 450h provided by hearing your Lexus of Jackson and a BMW II Drive x5 the plug-in hybrid provided by hearing your BMW of Jackson so let's dive a little deeper and see what the differences are now to be honest I really like the looks of this vehicle I know that not everybody would agree with me but that's not unique to the hybrid this is something that all Lexus vehicles have done with this spindle grille so if you want Alexis you kind of have to get used to it now that we're past that I'd like to get one thing out of the way a hybrid vehicle does not mean that it is an electric vehicle there are some people that would argue otherwise but all you need to know is that a regular hybrid vehicle like this or even think of a Prius are not plug-in vehicles you do not have to charge a battery on this vehicle so how does it make you get better fuel economy then you might be wondering well it's pretty simple when you're driving and you're slowing down you use the physical brakes to slow you down and that produces extra heat that's dissipated and wasted well what if you could capture that energy and then use it to accelerate again well that's exactly what a hybrid does this hybrid has a small battery pack that when you're slowing down captures the energy from slowing down and doesn't use the physical brakes as much or at all in some situations that's because the electric motor can also act like a generator when you're slowing down and then when you accelerate again or you need extra power the electric motor can provide assist and actually drive you on electric power for a short distance this all works together to give you very good fuel economy especially in city driving where you're stopping go a lot now if you're on the highway a hybrid doesn't give you as good a fuel economy difference as it does in city versus a regular gasoline vehicle but if you have a city commute at all you'd definitely be wise to consider the hybrid or some more electrified type of vehicle now I mentioned the Prius earlier don't think of the Prius when you think of this because this vehicle has 308 horsepower that's actually 13 more than the gasoline version of this car and this only runs on gas as well but because you get that extra performance from the electric motor you actually get better performance now let's take a look at what makes a plug-in hybrid different from a regular hybrid now that we've established that a hybrid is simply a gasoline vehicle that gets better fuel economy than its gasoline-only counterpart let's take a look at a plug-in hybrid the next step beyond a regular hybrid if you notice here I have a charge port this is where I can plug in the vehicle using the included cable I don't have to have any special equipment in my house or anything expensive to be able to charge this car it is a three prong outlet just like your laptop plugs into that means you get a full charge overnight no problem now this car has about 16 miles of all-electric range before you have to switch over to the gasoline engine the car does it all on its own nothing special for you to do and you might say well that's a little bit short range you know that doesn't seem like that will cover my daily commute well there's a couple things first if you can charge at work that would be able to give you a lot more range on your daily commute and there are a lot of other plug-in hybrids that you can get that have ranges up to 53 miles of electric range such as the Chevrolet Volt or the Honda clarity which has 47 miles of electric range that I just reviewed a couple weeks ago that means that you don't have to compromise when it comes to the luxury quiet power and fuel efficiency of an electric vehicle or the range anxiety that you get with an electric car because if you want to drive this car on gasoline no problem you can drive it its whole life on nothing but dinosaur fuel and it won't be a problem you don't have to plug it in but by plugging it in you do few benefits namely torque right off the line really fun drive quiet acceleration and lower running cost the more that you drive on the electric power the less you're using the gasoline engine and what that means for you is a longer life on the gasoline engine and less oil changes because an electric motor doesn't have a oil that needs to be changed so you get a lot of benefits for having a plug-in hybrid so when you're looking at getting a new vehicle and you're thinking you may just want to get a hybrid or maybe you think an electric car just won't work for you because the range isn't enough consider a plug-in hybrid because you can do all of your daily driving on electricity if you find the right fit for you and then if you need to go farther just put gas in the tank and it will keep on trucking this has been a Magnolia charging video by Landon Tucker please like and subscribe our videos
