in the Bay area, protesters try to take over the port of Oakland for several hours earlier this morning. They're calling for a cease fire in the Middle East and an end to U.S. aid to Israel. KTVU James Torres has more from Oakland. >> As early as five this morning, hundreds of people marched, chanted and carried large flags. >> We're at the port specifically because we're saying no to all U.S. commerce, so long as those dollars are being used to fund a genocide. People here at the Port of Oakland say they support the Palestinian people and want an immediate cease fire. >> They accuse the U.S. of supplying military aid to Israel and say that is contributing to what they call a humanitarian crisis. >> That's what this shows, is that this is a reflection of the groundswell of solid charity that Palestine has been gaining across the world. The people of Oakland are joined by the millions who have been demonstrating every single day since October, saying enough is enough. In November, protesters organized a similar demonstration, saying a ship at the port was bound for Tacoma, Washington, where people thought it would pick up military technology to send to Israel. >> Organizers say they are at the Port of Oakland this morning to stop that from happening. We need to stop this genocide. >> We need to stop U.S. aid to Israel, and we will absolutely not allow our own port to be complicit in this genocide by allowing the transport of arms and military equipment to Israel. The Jewish Community Relations Council responded to the protests at the port, offering a statement to KTVU saying in part that the attempted shutdown of the port of Oakland is the latest example of protesters stoking tensions and threatening the existence of the State of Israel. >> These demonstrate do nothing to bring the Middle East closer to peace, but they do make Jewish communities feel less safe. By about 9:00 Saturday morning, the people with flags and drums dispersed. But they say if they disrupted business at the port today, then their mission was a success. >> The people have had enough that they are saying no to war, no to genocide.
