[Music] hi everyone i'm getting a cat i'm so excited i don't have a cat or a dog or anything at the moment so this is quite a big new pet for me so today i just wanted to go into a haul of all of the supplies that i've purchased for the cat and also there's going to be a few controversial things i suppose brought up in this video because you know they are one of the most popular pets so people have a lot of opinions on how to care for them i'm gonna put time stamps there for in the description so you can just skip ahead if you don't want to hear me discussing a part or if you're interested in my views on that part then you can you know skip over to it and watch it so the first thing i'm gonna talk about a little bit boring not gonna lie we got four waterfalls now this one is controversial because a lot of websites claim that cats prefer and will drink more flowing water than standing water there have actually been a couple of scientific studies done on this and the conclusion that those studies show was that cats do prefer different methods of drinking such as a bowl specific type of bowl the material of the bowl and even a fountain and there was another study done where cats drank slightly more from a fountain but they also said industry that they played with the stream of water so it couldn't necessarily be concluded that they drank more because they were also swatting at it and making it go everywhere basically so for that reason i've chosen not to go for a fountain purely because putting sources of water in different areas of the home will encourage the cat to drink because there's more opportunities for the cat to drink in especially if there's a multicat household where the cats are confined to different parts or territories of the house for that reason i didn't want to run multiple fountains the running costs alone but also the issue of cleaning it every day as far as i'm aware the kitten is not used to fountains it is used to standing water however i've got several different methods in my mind of how i'm going to test if the cat prefers running water and that is when i turn the tap on if they come and play with it and try and drink out of it and another is the fish tank currently has cycled safe water in it because i've had the fish for a while of complete quarantine and the cat if it wants to drink out of there because it's got flowing surface then i'll know that it would like a fountain and in which case i'll purchase the fountains that needs to go around the house i did get four bowls of those and to go along with the moisture idea we are feeding the cat wet food the reason i'm like so concerned with moisture is because cats tend to drink less and it can cause bladder and urinary issues as well as chronic dehydration affecting all of the body i hope for lily's kitchen nature's menu and wainwrights because i liked all of the ingredients and i liked the composition of all of the nutrients added and the reason i'm not feeding a raw diet is simply because i feel like the cat will get everything it needs from a pre-made cooked and complete diet you need space in the freezer we only have one freezer i don't want to run a second freezer just for cat food there is salmonella risk etc different bacterias risked on raw meat now whilst that still exists for kibble the risk is significantly lower i'm not saying a raw diet isn't right for some cats or like if you do feed raw then that's the wrong option obviously it's not it's just not right for us i'm also feeding a complete diet so when you check the packets you want to make sure it's complete and not a complimentary food that just means that every meal encompasses all of the nutrients that the cat needs and i am going for a pre-made food rather than a homemade food now that's simply because i am not a cat nutritionist i do not know how vitamins and minerals react in a body and how they are absorbed by the cat i do not have in-depth very knowledge of a cat therefore i cannot make an effective diet for the cat at home i'm not saying every homemade meal is unbalanced but i'm saying that it's very often that homemade meals are unbalanced so you might feed one that is completely balanced and that's great for you however i do not feel i would balance the meal adequately enough when it's already been done for me and pre-made and i can be rest assured that all of the nutrients on there are in the food and they're on the bag and they have been analyzed food is a hot topic so hopefully no one comes out on my floor i am gonna feed some dry food now i did already say it's gonna be wet food fed and it it's gonna be like food fed however i've got a lot of enrichment activities that would not go well with wet food so i'd have to feed them treats and i want their mind to be stimulated so i'd have to give them quite a lot of treats for them to be able to be sat there for a while trying to get the food out so i've gone for applause kitten food this is quite a high protein diet it's 38 and then that's going to be used in the enrichment that can't have wet food added to it i do have a licky mat which could be used for wet food one of the enrichments i got was a trixie board another one is the cat its senses sort of food tower also got the nina otterson cat disc thing a little cat it ball treat dispenser and a kong forage mat which has like little little pockets and stuff that they can like pull treats and food out of or toys and things like that as for treats i went for lily's kitchen i got a couple of flavors i got the fish one and i got the chicken one some of the treats i looked at would be like prawn and stuff but then when i looked at the ingredients it was like it was like 50 chicken and 4 prawns so if it was something like that i didn't go for it but i've tried to incorporate enough flavors that the cat won't be picky oh that's another thing i'm feeding a different variety of cat foods and one of the problems with doing that is if they're not used to the food so they will be introduced with food slowly to make sure the tolerant of it and then they've got a wide selection because to me a wide selection of food is good for enrichment purposes and you know flavors and stuff like that senses smell i also got the creamy sachet things because i thought that would be good to put on the licky mat and stuff and there's just a bit of a different texture to like hard treats so i felt like i could use those in different enrichments and stuff i also got a kitten toothbrush and toothpaste i'm going to try and make sure that i brush their teeth every single day to make sure that they don't have dental disease down the line then for toys i just got like a selection pack of different balls it's got like crinklies and bells and there's a little mouse in there i got a duck that hangs on the door frame so the cat can play with it and i'll swing around and that'll keep them occupied without me having to wave around because then playing with it will make it bounce everywhere i got um a trixie ball on rollers and it's a three tier as well and i thought they could hit that and play with it as much as they wanted on their own but also i'll play with it with them as well because they're unlikely to want to play with it when they realize that the balls just go round in circles that might be one that they grow out of but if they do that i'll just donate it to a rescue got a mouse that when you pull up the string it like vibrates it only does it for a minute a little bit disappointed with it not gonna lie but maybe it'll be hit and maybe we'll get one that works for a bit longer hello i've switched locations because my boyfriend came home and wanted a shower which was too loud for the microphone i also got some bubbles um with catnip in it that one was inspired by my mum she posted a photo of oscar the dog playing with bubbles and i thought it was really cute so i wanted some for the cat to play with i thought they'd be fun to catch we also got a wand and that's got three interchangeable little pieces on the end i thought that would be fun to play and they also got some dental sticks which have got a silver vine in it which i saw um hubble from emilyology her cat went kind of crazy for them so i wanted to try some too i also got the cat dancer which is like a piece of cardboard on the end of a wire and i was worried that the wire might maybe hurt them but i think i'll be fine because loads of people have been using it and saying that it's like the cat's favorite toy but you just sort of bounce it and it's got erratic movements and it kind of looks like a moth flying around so i quite liked the look of that and i went for that we're also going to go to pets at home soon and buy some more things because i feel like the toy box also got lots of treat dispensers in it they need like more little little bits you know so i was going to get sort of a con kicker or something like that or like a big fish or just some more like soft toy stuff that they can like really throw around but the last toy i wanted to talk about is maybe a little bit controversial all those things again i'll link some papers below that is a laser pointer now the reason if you didn't know why a laser pointer is so controversial is because in dogs it can cause ocd related symptoms where the dog continually chases the light i'll try and put like an example on the screen now i'll have taken that from other youtube videos which i'll link below but you can see with that behavior that's not really normal and a lot of the times it can be caused by playing with laser pointers with the dogs now a lot of people are now concerned that it's going to happen to cats as well however a lot of cats the laser pointer is one of their highest reward items and they get a lot of exercise out of it so for those cats it's a massive benefit to have a laser pointer but other cats get frustrated that they can't can you hear the guinea pigs squeak in they can hear me talking and they're just chatting away back um a lot of other cats can get frustrated that they cannot catch the dot a cat has a sequence of events where it stalks its prey it tries to catch it it haunts them so it catches them and then it can eat them and if you play with a laser pointer that doesn't allow that cycle to finish then they get frustrated and they show signs of stress and sometimes that stress can be so severe that it causes ocd related symptoms such as the looking at shadows or overgrooming personally for me i'm gonna try the laser pointer because what i've got in mind is sort of hiding little bits of food like wet foods and stuff letting them chase the pointer and landing on the food so then they can eat the food and it's sort of a chase catch eat system which is rewarding and not stressful but if they do get stressed by the laser pointer of course i'm not going to use it and it'll just be left in a drawer accidentally got a christmas one so you've got the normal little dot but then you can have like a snowman and a christmas tree and stuff i had no idea it didn't even say on the box that it was christmas related but when it came i was like oh maybe it said in the description but i didn't read it obviously got the litter box which i went for a hooded one and i know a lot of the rules is you should have a little box per cat plus one so if you've got one cat you want two if you've got two cats you want three the litter i went for is cat's best because it's sort of a natural product i suppose but it's still clumps so it still allows you to use a little scoop which is another thing i got and keep them clean and i also read lots of good reviews about how it wasn't smelly and stuff and instead of having a second hooded litter box i wanted just an open one so i already had one from the guinea pigs so i just made that into sort of a little kitten tray that i could move room to room whilst we're slowly letting the kitten explore different areas so it's got somewhere where it knows it's literally it's not gonna be intimidated by having to like push a flap open or whatever although when it comes it could just easily be able to use the one in the kitchen and just be fine so we'll see where that goes but i was thinking i'll just get another hooded one if it starts using the one in the kitchen no point buying two for now if it doesn't use two this is another controversial thing but the cat's gonna be an indoor cat so i do have a harness for it so we can take it outside and i'm hoping it will come in the garden with me and i'll sort of be like if it tries to jump the fence and go anywhere i'd be like no come back however so it's got a bit of freedom in the garden to just kind of chill because i feel like even if it climbs up onto the top of the fence or whatever as long as i've got my eye on it and i'm still watching it'll be all right maybe that's been hopeful and the cat will just run into the abyss but in the uk it's more usual that you would keep a cat outdoors um and it's kind of considered cruel to keep them inside but if she never ends up being harness trained then that's just that oh oh well we did get a catchy as well that's in the living room we got that one from wayfair because they had like a nice selection that was pretty cheap now it's not the biggest country in the world might not hold an adult cat and i've heard people say like their cat scratched it all up and like it died if she does that i'll consider it like the kitten tower so like it's kind of small but it's like quite good quality i like the quality i think it's good it might last it might not i'm not gonna be too upset about it if it doesn't last we also want to put up like little shelves and stuff for the cat to like go across our little tunnels up in the air because they do like to be quite high and it's going to be an indoor cat so we want as much enrichment and climbing opportunities as possible i've also set up like shelving units where they can like jump to the top of the shelf and i put like blankets up there and maybe some toys and stuff like that i've got a slicker brush to brush the cat i do have lots of other different brushes and grooming stuff from having a dog in the past and also having the rabbits they have different brushes and stuff so i'm just going to disinfect them between each animal and use them between each animal i do have pet remedy as well although i've heard about feel away i think it is so maybe i'll get one of those i already have the pet remedy because of the rabbits and guinea pigs i've got nail clippers already um i've got one of those cat scrapers already where you know you've got like hair on your sofa you can like scrape it down loads of blankets already from the guinea pigs they have blankets on the floor and i've got like a horde of blankets so um i put some blankets down here and a little cubby hole underneath the fish tank oh got a radiator bed that can go on the radiator someone's nice and warm maybe not a summer thing but that's what i've got well i wanted to get a cool mat as well for summer a lot of toys for the guinea pigs and rabbits and stuff i've got loads of tunnels so i'll just bring it and let the cat use it disinfect it between use etc i think that's already i think i've gone through everything that we've got the cat i'm really excited for her she's so cute we do already have a cat she's gonna be called hazel i'll put some pictures on the screen now she's so cute [Music] please leave a comment down below if you think that there's anything that i'm missing we don't get her for another four weeks yet so plenty of time to pick up a few bits and bobs oh i want a ripple rug as well like i've had my eye on that and then there was another um it's like a white food dispenser but it's got like bowls on the end so that they can put the pores in it's got like spikes everywhere i'll put a picture up here i really want one of those they're on my list of things that i want to get as well anyway there's probably loads of things i want to get thanks for watching bye
