in 2019 grimdon's final expansion the Forgotten Gods released and with that grimdon was complete or was it because now we're in 2023 and create entertainment has not only announced patch 1.2 which seems to be their largest patch to date but they've also announced the fangs of astercarn a brand new expansion for Grim Dawn all this came from the crate entertainment live stream on August 29th and so in today's special gaming news wrap up I'm gonna go over this story in a little bit more detail stick around if you want to know more about Grim Don which is absolutely a game I recommend and I've recommended in the past as well so first up patch 1.2 there's a whole bunch of quality of life changes along with some very interesting gameplay fixes starting with number one but let's talk about patch 1.2 so if you're looking at my UI over here you can see that I've got new buttons right over the level level here e and r and there's actually a third one that's in the middle that's a little blank right now and there's a reason for that uh so enr our our new dedicated potion buttons the reason being is that potions no longer exist in your inventory so if you had like five stacks of potions of each kind they're gone no more potion management and Patch 1.2 potions are infinite they're available Baseline to all characters you can just press those buttons you can either press them on the HUD or you can press the hotkeys and it'll work just like they used to before and so there you have it you no longer need potions now I get why potions originally existed and in fact if I hadn't ever played D2 I probably would have said yeah but it's not that bad to drain potions and collect them and buy them oh man if you go back and play uh Sorkin D2 yeah it's pretty bad to collect and drink and buy potions in comparison to a lot of modern games and in grimdon buy potions didn't really improve the gameplay experience at least not for me because I was never in danger of running out of potions I just had to go back to town an annoying amount of times to buy them it slowed my progression rather than enhancing it I think a lot of modern systems do a much better job of this by either locking out your potion via a cooldown or alternatively giving you limited access to charges so if the developers have much more direct control over how many potions you get and you don't really feel like the goal is to just go back to town and choose the whole darn thing so I'm very happy to see the unlimited potions coming to grimdon and in fangs of astercarn they get even better but more on that in just a little bit the second big mechanic we're adding to the game is a new uh debuff called sundered so if a monster sunders your defenses you will find yourself taking additional percent damage for example a monster might hit you with a special ability and that causes you to take 30 additional damage from all incoming attacks this is a mechanic we're planning to use to replace a lot of the current resist reduction effects that monsters have the main reason being is resist reduction is actually pretty easy to counter as long as you overstack your resists you're not actually going to take any more damage from those abilities and the only the only consequence of that is that you find that you actually need to stack way more resistances than you normally would and then bosses like mcdrogen who has a ton of lightning damage and a ton of resist reduction to lightning will end up just tickling you because you just have 180 lightning resistance and it makes no difference so sundered is going to be a replacement for that so certain special abilities that bosses and regular monsters have will Sunder you causing you to take more damage so you might want to watch out for some special abilities in the future but you're gonna have a Nifty Baseline evasion ability for that purpose um so multiple effects of sundered will not stack the highest value will take effect so if a boss Thunders you for 40 and a mom hits you for 15 the 40 will take priority two um facilitate avoiding all those tough new attacks we have actually gone through a lot of the monsters in the game and slowed down their special abilities we're talking like a 10 to 20 reduction in their animation speed so for example you might picture the manticores their tail strike that is an example of an ability that will Sunder your defenses but it's going to be quite a bit slower than it was before so if you're paying attention and you see that tail coming up you'll be able to avoid it same for many other examples now sundering should make it a lot easier to understand the mechanics enemies are throwing at you and also it should mean very little bit more effective because I remember playing Grim Don and just stacking a bunch of resistances which did seem to be a pretty good way to get immune to damage sure my DPS wasn't great but I also didn't take very much damage from a lot of things either and if I didn't have resistances oh boy did things hurt the sound effect means you're going to consistently take damage however you're also going to consistently have tools to deal with that damage in the form of potions and one other thing which I'll just let crate reveal this one for you that button in the middle is a feature we actually haven't talked about yet for 1.2 and that is the addition of a baseline evasion ability so it's as as other action RPGs have come out in the market we've kind of noticed that there's been a new standard for having a baseline evasion ability and we feel like grimdon could use that too so our plan and we'll see how that all works out we're still kind of working on that and that's just why it's currently blank is that we're going to add a baseline division ability for everybody regardless of which version of the game you own and people that own forgotten Gods will be able to upgrade that evasion ability with the runes from that expansion so you're no longer be applying anything to a metal as an augment you'll instead be applying it to that ability replacing it yep that's right they added an active Dodge rule to Grim Dawn which is going to completely change up the gameplay and should make melee feel way better one of my big complaints about melee and Grim Don is it was a little easy to get stuck on enemies and if your body blocked who had to kill your way out or if you got body blocked by a large boss then there was a good chance you'd die since there are going to be telegraphed abilities careful positioning may be required but overall having an active Dodge should feel good and it's going to make builds not only more mobile but give melee players more options since this automatically allows you to face through enemies without having to cross-class and spec into something else now grimgun has a pretty good loot filter already but they've made it even better in several ways so I'll just let the dev explain it quickly and then give my thoughts probably the thing that took the longest by far was a complete overhaul to our loot tables we're talking about going through hundreds if not thousands of data entries and cleaning out the loot tables in the game and what do I mean by that I mean like 30 to 60 percent less items dropping on the screen we got rid of a ton of junk we got rid of all those potions that you you've been dropping and what we did to compensate for that is we increased the quality of the loot so you are getting less items but those items will be a higher quality so you're talking about a higher chance of getting a double rare affix for example and even though there's going to be less items on the screen we still thought it might be a good idea to have some loot beams and that was really loud I'm gonna turn into the Game Zone down and then we wanted to make sure the monster in frequents were differentiated on the ground as well so if you just get a regular old monster frequent it's going to have this nice new little symbol for you so you can tell that it dropped amongst all those other greens but if you get a double rare monster infrequent then it looks like this likewise if you get a double rare green item and if you look on the mini map you can actually see that they're labeled on there right for you so if you missed anything along the way you can see it's going to get marked the only thing I like about grimton's Loop filter is it's really easy to set up and use you just click a couple things and you're good to go this absolutely seems to be the case with all the changes but now you'll have Loop beams you'll have sounds and you have icons I really really like this I wish more games would do this by default where If an item is special and should be picked up it has some sort of unique symbol that you can see immediately identifying it so that you don't have to worry about is this good is this bad should I pick this up well even a new player knows there's a couple diamonds there no other items have a couple diamonds that's pretty shiny and you're definitely going to want to take a look at it from the perspective of someone who's played through grimdot a few times but doesn't really min max the end game I didn't feel like the loot was that egregious but I definitely felt like there's a point where I needed to turn my Loop filter on and going through the entire loot table weeding out bad items and replacing them with good items is a great choice and something that I think a lot of modern arpgs get right when they're at their best and get wrong when they're after worst I don't personally care how many items I see a boss drop it could be one it could be five it could be 50. what matters to me is how many items the boss drops which I also want to pick up and hopefully what this change means is there's going to be a significant increase in the number of items I want to pick up even if there's a decrease in the number of total items dropped by the boss so all for this change and I'm very excited to see it this is a much needed upgrade and it's one of many since there are several other quality of life features packed into the 1.2 update but you'll have to read the full patch notes or check out the live stream video which is down in the description below for more details on that I guess this means that my grimdon review isn't so accurate anymore because I said it was a review of a complete game and now we're getting new content so look forward to should you play grimdon in 2024 with fangs of astercarn or maybe after you're done watching this video check out my should you play Grim Don in 2023 since that does talk about the game in its current state right now and yes even right now it's absolutely worth your time genuinely excellent title but what is fangs of astrocarn well it's a brand new expansion set in the Frozen North First up you'll get ascendant game mode this game mode adds on to Ultimate much like how Vectren adds on to normal it turns the campaign and the world into a challenge making it more similar to grimdons and game encounters so you won't be farming in specific areas like the shattered Realms or The Crucible I mean you may be farming in those but you will also be able to farm in the campaign and since you can take the campaign all the way to level 100 even in normal as of 1.2 this should make for a much more uniform experience where players get to choose the kind of content they want rather than just going for the content that is strictly the most rewarding and for anyone who had been looking around before the patch you might have seen the number 10 and 10 without context is just 5 plus 5 or 5 times 2 or 3 plus 3 plus 3 plus 1 or 20 divided by two it's also the Berserker Mastery because grimdon is getting a 10th Mastery bringing the total number of class combinations to 45 and the Berserker is pretty unusual she gets to transform into various beasts unfortunately I'm a stream none of these forms were confirmed but I would guess there's going to be a bear a wolf and a dire elephant because who wouldn't want to transform into a dire elephant and then trample their foes and on the one hand that's pure speculation on my part on the other hand Zentai if you see this please add a dire elephant To Grim Dawn the DLC also brings a new chapter in the story of Karn journey into the West to discover the rugged Wilderness of astrocarn and contend with a mighty Kern just be warned that like many other places in Karn these nomadic people are haunted by a Dark Legacy and renewed conflict might end up involving multiple factions there's going to be a lot of new environments including Snowy Peaks and that makes me wonder if they've done anything to the game snow physics I would assume yes main story quests Side Story quests you name it the expansion is also going to feature potion customization yes those potions that are infinite you can now turn them into powerful permanent effects that either give you a unique buff or possibly even give you stats it was a little bit unclear all we know for sure is it's going to be really good awesome and even temporary Buffs should be very helpful maybe you get a burst of healing and defenses or maybe you just do a whole bunch of damage and absolutely nuke enemies with the DLC they've also expanded both The Crucible and shattered realm so if you really want to push your character you're definitely going to be able to and there are hundreds of new items most likely including many Monster infrequents epic items and unique legendaries and in the new expansion legendaries are going to be a big Focus because you can now awaken epic items into legendaries unleashing their true potential and last but not least there's also going to be a new feature where skills can have multiple charges so you cast it several times in a row then it goes on cooldown it was also hinted but there could be a component or crafting tab but this isn't confirmed as of right now though it's absolutely something that I'm hoping for the things of astrocarn are coming in 2024 and tie into velor For an upcoming RTS by crate you know create the developers that came from the studio that made Titan Quest the arpg made by RPS developers who works on Age of Empires one of my favorite games yeah needless to say it's really awesome that there's this kind of interesting arpg RTS gameplay Loop hybrid we're seeing with Studios working on both and tying them together I'm super excited I love the RTS genre I'm absolutely looking forward to what crate is making here both in terms of fangs of astrocarn and your upcoming RTS and last but not least it was hinted before working on the grimdon engine 2. I don't see why you'd have a grimdon engine too unless there's going to be a grim done too so that could very well be on the table right now though they did not confirm this so until we hear further it's not set in stone so if you've played grimdon before are you looking forward to patch 1.2 and fangs of astercon let me know down in the comments below or alternatively if you've never played grimdon does this look like something you'd like to check out maybe take a look at my review after this personally I've played grimdon several times I always tend to get stuck where I beat normal I have a lot of fun with it and then I go into the next difficulty level which everything I just did but slightly harder and this becomes a slog for me and that's where I get stuck I really wish that at some point they'd streamline the whole experience by setting the game to a single difficulty mode and allowing people to scale the difficulty via other Dynamic things but as things are now I like Grim Don I'm definitely going to play for fangs of astercarn whether I will actually make it to Ultimate and play in the end game I honestly have no idea I guess we'll just have to get subscribed and stick around to see if that happens but if you have any thoughts on the game expansion or upcoming RTS let me know down in the comments now that thanks for watching if you're looking for some more Grim done content then check out one of my videos that'll be up in the card down below or possibly on screen right now before I go a special thanks to my patrons and channel members for the continued support for as low as one dollar a month you can help me afford Grim done fangs of astercon and make more videos just like this one possible I hope you enjoyed this more focused Deep dive style look at a gaming news story if you did be sure to leave it a like and I hope to see you again sometime soon
