what's up guys this is Heist we are once again in Houston Texas today for something extra special and extra big if you take a look just above me you'll see that we're in one of the coolest indoor layouts on the planet in g-scale large scale G and gn3 locomotives everything you see is scratch built by hand it's absolutely incredible let's go take a look that's right we're at Barry Bogues Colorado and west Western Railroad in Houston from the first look your jaw will drop because you walk into his house look up and you realize that the trains are about 15 ft above your head as you walk into the foyer the locomotives cars and scenery are all true to the name Colorado and otherwise Western many things from the Rio Grand the Union Pacific and more Barry told me a number of times during our visit that it's all fun and he's right he's also known for his tenacity it all has to run and run right it's dual gauge a mixture of G and G and three all 1 to 22.5 scale but two different gauges The Narrow Gauge trains run on what you normally might call G gauge track and the standard gauge runs on what is called gauge three because of the unique choice and gauge the standard gauge trains on this railroad are absolutely gigantic they're truly a sight to behold in person and they're absolutely fantastic they're probably larger than most model trains you've ever seen if not all of them and they've been scratchbuilt by one man Barry has made more than 40 locomotives and this is just a cute little smattering of them and doesn't even get into to the amount of detail and love and Carries put into them look at this roundhouse it's full of rear Grand Narrow Gauge and it's all fantastic he uses LGB gearboxes but that's about where the manufactured Parts end many of the locomotive made are of the same class sisters if you will but each one has Road specific details which is where some of the true beauty of what he's created lies cuz the amount of fun details that are actually on these locomotives is just out of this world PC model and one that's done well also he'll go in pull all the photos of locomotives make sure you know the details are there um of course got the shut fell for the air ringer come on he tries to get it down to the in detail so I mean I'm here for it why would you bend a pipe like that R Grand the dynamos pipe I mean it's piped off the turret and it goes up and then goes around the uh around the turret shut off to get to the Dynamo more exciting than the minute details are the big details many folks are aware of the Denver and rear Grand Western class k27 but not everyone has seen the wacky variants that survived until their own end take dnrg w460 with the goofy long Smoke Box slide valves Stevenson valve gear all the way to the end Barry made it how about the early one the class 125 with the voan compound setup and the bells animated well yeah Barry made and anim that too there's so much more to nerd on about particularly for an arrow gauge of ficado like myself and we'll save some of that for later but let's hear a little bit about how he actually makes these locomotives the l131 driv car a a casting that it's a all metal casting I use a I mean a nylon bushing to insulate the axle from the wheel sure but after I got got you know those set made the guy sold all of his equipment and I was unable to get any more additional made so that's why I went to turning the driver turning the tire on the laads out of that pipe and then creating my own you know Center that's genius how you do it now it's really cool no way to slip a tire basically I put it in the lathe and I just take the cutting tool and I bring it up to the side of the the the tire um get it smooth I take it out of the leg turn it around and smooth the other side so what I do is I bring it to the correct width first then I come back I start cutting the you can see cutting towards the [Music] flange that's such an interesting setup for something so small like that to be able to hang on to it and have enough tool pressure to make the cut this is what I cut the slot in and I have to actually reverse the motion oh run lathe backwards run it to get that slot in the interior so it's it's basically in there like that and I'm cutting the the groove like that with it okay cool and that just has the flange profile right in it I can that's what it is like right there wow so I can just basically pull that up and then cut or it kind of you know I still use a file to kind of smooth it out but I just kind of validate what I've done with this piece here and any extra you know fer or whatever that comes off and then I basically take a file while it's running and I smooth out the edge of the flange um just to try to get it as smooth as possible okay before I send it off to the pler that's right the newest locomotive SP has made have tires and driver's centers very similar to a full-size locomotive the whole reason that he cuts that Groove into the tire is to give the casting a place to bite into so that it's secured because the trink fit process of a full size locomotive doesn't necessarily scale down to the model speaking of full size well these aren't full size but they're about the biggest working models I've ever seen the Denver and rearr Western l131 and the Union Pacific Big [Music] Boy you have any I love big engine I me you got I'll admit first thing that's my favorite two big articulated seeing you know the biggest of the grand the biggest of the up almost the same in terms of Tractive effort but getting to it's like 131 133 right 137 I think on the big boy but just seeing big boy is just a little bit long seeing the little differences one of my favorite things about the r Grand standard gauge is how familial the tenders look still to the Narrow Gauge it looks he took a k36 tender and Zapped it you know it's [Music] [Music] cool wow a [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] thinking of big engines but of a non-articulated variety some of Barry more recently finished locomotives include big six the Western Maryland sheay which is simply mesmerizing to watch and mindboggling to comprehend how you'd even begin to put it together with parts that you made yourself and then a model of Union Pacific 844 which he's finished in the beautiful Greyhound scheme watching scaled down 80in drivers is still magic and the model itself is exquisite so I have to ask how did you get the centipede tender to play nice with the curvature it's like a 4 42 4 okay so the I I basically make two trucks just it's just like a box car that actually supports the weight for the mechanical details of how the trains actually run on the layout to the physical details that I didn't even realize until I'm editing the video this train has two idler cars in it and a Narrow Gauge flat car in the middle that's what's carrying the load the 567b Y as a load cool that's what's inside cool there's no shortage of Steam on the layout but that doesn't mean that there aren't diesels Barry has these beautiful F units as well as a pair of these fantastic cross Mafi diesel hydraulic locomotives that the Grand and the Southern Pacific had with all of the details the cabin Interiors the engine Bays the fans that spin up when they load up it's all there one thing that's really hard to show off on camera is just how busy and action pathed this layout is everywhere you look there's something going on multiple trains on multiple levels different directions different gauges all at once as we run through the yard look there's a big boy there's 268 coming off the turntable there's a k28 going up on the Highline there's so much to look at it's so action-packed and all [Music] incredible hey that's one of my coaches he got 2 4 and it's got the electric lights and everything this is neat just when you think you've seen it all and you finally understand the layout there's more as we watch the silver Vista head out of sight on The High Line behind the Silverton out from the tunnel emerges the San Juan another passenger train led by a k28 and sure the cars oh they're green instead of yellow but that's a different RPO and then it's got the closed vestibule cars which are separate from the ones on the silver tin and they're all done correctly it's so amazing to see and just when you think you've gotten that you look up up top the 489 has been following behind the Silverton with the mixed Freight so you turn around to see what else is going on and look through the gigantic yard and roundhouse complex which is f the brim with what you remember is custom made Rolling Stock and then eventually you look down and realize there's more hidden staging than you could even begin to see or perceive the details are everywhere the tunnels have actual lined walls a practice that most skip in model railroading the structures and scenery are gorgeous every scene tells a story I honestly wish I spent more time filming the structures in scenery because it was all amazing the Durango Depot is just beautiful the nerdy Road number specific details are everywhere 268 has her pilot mounted big flanger 495 has her gigantic rear cold board that only she got out of all the k37 we could go down Rabbit Hole after rabbit hole on this layout and the equipment and still not cover it all in a YouTube video and we haven't even talked about the multiple control panels camera system and the train elevator that's hidden in staging every last piece of it was all mindblowing but at the end of the day there's one very important thing to remember it is all fun it's all fun Barry's catchphrase the entire time he was showing us the layout was it's all fun and if you've been following this three-part series of layout tours in Houston you'll know this was the third layout we saw and we actually saw it first with the power out the D show took out power for tons of folks for days but Barry still had us over as a gracious host and he was adamant we had to come back and see it all run and thankfully we did because what an incredible thing it is to see an action I know there's several important key ridiculous details I'm leaving out hand laid track turnouts The Fabulous model of the Ferd mellin presidential car with its animated car attendant but what sticks with me after visiting this railroad along with the other two railroads from the series is wow that's the best layout I have ever seen in its own specific way huge thank you to both Barry Bogues and his son Blake for opening their home to us and spending a few hours blowing our minds and we didn't even see all of it anyways guys I hope you liked this video I hope you were as mind blown by Barry's work as I am it's all fun [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] [Applause] a [Applause] [Music] [Music] oh [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music]
