greetings viewers air at the car guy today I'm working on Dark Matter Pikachu and I'm looking to wrap the exhaust headers I have this stuff from design engineering Inc here and it is a titanium exhaust wrap and the reason you want to do something like this is the headers themselves just vent heat inside the engine compartment and the spring engine compartment temperatures up which can make the engine less efficient also in my case I'm running a turbo so the exhaust is run differently than it normally would be and kind of comes close to a few things that I don't want to expose to the extreme heat those are all reasons why I'm doing this other than the fact it's going to look cooler than rusty headers this video will be a tutorial on how to install exhaust wrap onto your headers I'll be starting over here on the driver's side as you can see I haven't even really run this all that much and I've already got some rust on the headers but once again I'm mostly doing this because I want to keep the heat off of some of the components inside the engine compartment the first thing I'm going to do is remove these spark plug boots and get them up out of the way so that I have better access in here and you know might not be a bad idea to do this before you even put the header on the car some had a wraps require that you soak them overnight before you use them this type does not do that so be sure to read the instructions to find out what type that you have here's the first header I'm going to wrap on the passenger side and I'm going to take it down to here just up above this clamp but I'm not going to go over this clamp I still want to be able to service this I'm going to wrap this part down here separately but I will start up here and I'm actually going to do both the headers first and leave this for less it being easiest now we remove the wires and set these aside I guess you really need to come up with a plan on how you're going to wrap this it's going to look cleaner if you wrap the collector and one of the headers as one final piece so in other words you wrap around this big part and then you go to the smaller part and come out there like that the first part is to come up with a plan and I think I'm going to wrap this header here first I will start by measuring out how many loops it's going to take to cover this header and you want to leave yourself a quarter inch of overlap so here's a loop so I'll count let's eat a quarter inch overlap one two seven I'm going to call that eight that way I've got just a little bit left over now what I'll do is I'll take this and make these loops about that same length so it's about that long and I can just count that out one two seven eight so that should cover that one pipe now I'll trim it now this is specific to this type of wrap but you'll notice along this bottom edge it's sort of a sewn edge and the top edge is not sewn that sewn edge needs to face the collector so when you're installing this make sure the sewn edge is facing down towards the collector with this what they call for is to fold one end over for the first initial wrap fold one end over like that and bring it around the first one should help lock it down and then after that try to maintain that quarter inch overlap and you go from a collector up towards the cylinder head each time like a safety that quarter inch of overlap and pulling it tight as I'm coming around and when you get to bends like this one side is going to be fatter than the other it'll be thin on the inside and fat on the outside hoping I've got enough because if I don't it'll be embarrassing as is the part where leaving yourself a little bit extra would have been beneficial because I came up short I can use this piece elsewhere but I'll have to start this over because as you can see I'm a couple of loops short third times charm yeah first set of headers 15 feet is not going to be enough they sell this in like 50 foot rolls I would go for one of the higher the nominations I know I'm going to use every bit of the two roles that I did get [Music] there we are did uh I'm going to turn that down there are metal retainers that go around the outside of this that I have on order I'll show you those before the end of the video for now temporarily I'm just going to secure it with a zip tie until that metal comes in and continue on but pretty much it's the same process all the way through now if you've got a couple of pipes like this that are right next together I suggest you wrap them together so in other words I would wrap this pipe from here up to here and then come back in and wrap both of these pipes and then when I get to this point just wrap this single pipe down to the end I'll see if I can show you that this is only temporary do not leave them ties on here to secure this they will melt and it won't be bad that will hold that for now okay for this last rap I'm going up the collector I'm going over these two in here and then these two in here and I'm going to finish up over here you can do like I did before and loop these around and do to your counts to determine how many going to need I'm just going to use the whole roll on this one because I've misjudged a couple of times on the wraps further up it's going to be a little more cumbersome but I'm hoping that I'm actually able to cover this area and it's the same as before and the stitch side is going to face down and I said facing towards the collector but just down in general so you can do the overlap and you can sort of pre wrap these in other words loop it all around loosely first but I prefer to do it the hard way [Music] they said it might fit loosing some spots on the collector that's okay yeah feeling it even though I was working hard that this simply wouldn't be enough we will write till the rest of the material shows up and we'll finish this up Hey look what just showed up here the clamps here's more wrap I think the first thing I'm going to do is I'm going to undo this wrap that I did during the last take there measure it up and get the length that I'm going to need to finish this side up music comes off I like a lot easier than it goes on right how many more loops are we going to need from here I'm going to give it 13 just in case all this plus 13 loops for that last section so that's that's going to be a substantial amount plus 14 loops 12 13 14 there should do it let's try this again and kind of frayed this keeps coming undone at the end as one of these long pieces here that keeps coming out every time I come around and it's causing it to unravel not cool this unraveling is basically wasted about a foot of this stuff so I'm a little disappointed you put a piece of tape on it or something to keep it from doing that I'm almost at the end here let's say I worked that out pretty darn good since I only have that much left over not some so solved it I just need to get back up where it was I've got this crazy idea but I've got these long threads like I said it was pulling through anyway I just wonder if I can use this to tie some of this off does make for a slightly weird spot but I like it better than not having any coverage there okay let's tie this one down for real one of these tie clamps that I showed you earlier feed it back through itself it's almost like a CD boot thing cut this tool that comes with this stuff is fiddly to say the least the biggest problems is back here on the thing that's supposed to hold it down keeps catching my hat's better so it keeps catching and I can't pull it through the tool is set up to work with a quarter inch ratchet they want you to turn it this way counterclockwise for some reason yeah well don't twist you hard because it will break got to trim off the excess anyway they gave me eight of these small ones and I think two of the long ones I would recommend getting a couple of these kits just so that you have them it seems to be a point you know well this won't go any farther and I suggest you heed that warning there we go one header complete now it's time to do the other side the other side has its own challenges so this one to here this one to here this one to here and that will do a collector double it up and then at the end here since these two pipes are so close together at the end here I'll take this out to this last one which this collector is going to be fun there's a sensor plug underneath here remember the stitch side faces the collector every time I say the collector I think of guardians of the galaxy Benicio Del Toro's character the collector can good at this because I just nailed that because we have our clamps we'll just jump in with that these header bolts think I'm going to be near an impossible like impossible to remove some of them and the hits just keep on coming get that long thread cut it going to unravel a whole business the valve covers earlier some of the process of changing this auto mechanic thing doesn't work out I guess I get a job and mummification are their jobs in mummification I don't know if that's a growing field maybe there's a better way doing these clamps part of me is just like take this whole freakin role and go for it that way you do it you do it once and that's that because I got to go from here all the way to here use it all just go ahead use it all and whatever is left over you can just trim it and in this piece I think what I'm going to do is I think I will tape this so that it doesn't come unraveled like it did before I bet sacrificing just this little piece is way better than the foot that I lost last time so you can learn from my mistakes first things first which is my stitched end that looks like this end right here stitched [Music] will it take it longer doing it this way yeah do I feel this is the best way to tackle this [Music] taking off that end with an awesome idea [Music] my george'll I think I've caught it taping that up with key it didn't come on wrap up while I was wrapping it and it certainly allowed me to get it done well that sure does look Purdy just for good measure and because I have a couple of these longer anchors I'm going to do the other end right then one more if I were to do this next time I also use thicker stuff this will probably work good on smaller headers but because this is bigger I might go for some wider stuff if I were to do this again in the future principles still the same with a cover more area with a wider rule I also plan to do this section however I don't have enough left over well that concludes my tutorial on wrapping exhaust headers the type of wrap that I was using actually comes in two different sizes they have a one inch size and they also have a two inch size available I went back with a two inch and wrap this large pipe down here that was much easier it covered a lot more area a lot more quickly in fact you might want to consider this instead of the stuff that I use but I'm sure the bigger wrap might present its own challenges and all that shiny stuff you see that will be covered in a future video so don't worry either way I believe the information that's in this video will guide you through what you need to know a couple of takeaways though first of all these little straggly string things here trim them up and tape up the ends while you work if not these things will just continue to unwind I lost at least a foot it seems on that one rap that I was doing that was pretty disappointing so tape the ends and make sure that it doesn't unravel on you also leave a little bit extra it took me a little while to get it you know I showed you how to measure sort of looping around the pipe and Counting that give yourself a little bit extra because nothing sucks more than to get almost to the end or realize you don't have enough in fact you know I got to the point where I was just using more and more of it and trimming at the end it made it more difficult to wrap the headers but at the same time I was sure that I had enough you can also do what they call priming which is loosely wrap the wrap around the pipe and then come back later and tighten it all up unlike what I was doing which was fishing around and tightening up each and every wrap you don't necessarily need to do it that way it might be more for you to prime it first also having the engine out of the car super helpful I think it would be even more helpful to not even have the exhaust attached to the engine so in other words before you bolt your headers on to your engine and if you're considering doing a raft do it then there are also different types of rafts besides this some of them require soaking for a little bit so be sure to read the instructions of whatever rap there you're using and follow those instructions zip ties were kind of helpful to me as far as holding things in place until I got the actual clamps I did have some difficulty with those clamps as I was using however when I ordered the second set of clamps they came like this they're smooth and they don't have that type of tooth mechanism that hold these things on so these are a little bit different but yeah those those were kind of fiddly and difficult for me I will link these in the description tools whatever additional information that might be useful to you from watching this video will be linked in the description so please check there if you have questions if you have automotive questions not covered in this video I asked you to go to air at the cargo comm I'll also link that down in the description if you are subscribed to eric the car guy I ask that you click the little belt icon so that you're notified when I post new videos outside of that be safe have fun stay dirty thanks so much for watching I'll see you next time [Music]
