[Music] first really important thing I have to stress I see the whip is quite a personal trick so this video is not to prescribe as a particular way you have to do the trick or anything like that if you're having fun getting whipped out getting sideways and having a good time just keep doing what you're doing stop watching this video you don't need to simple as that um but if you you're getting trying to get whipped and you're feeling like the bars are turning and it's more of a tweak you're not really feeling the back end come out or seeing the back wheel or you were foot in that sense and this video is more General guidance and tips in terms of what's helped me progress my whips over the years um but it's to you know it's to guide not to prescribe key thing thanks for watching [Music] great so we've established this isn't about whipping in a certain way this is just general principles for the whip um I've broken it down into three stages the first is the pre- whip basically the carve second is the snap and this in and here in is the secret I think getting a bit more whipped in that sense um and then the third is The Recoil or basically getting it back in hopefully without Landing two sideways you at your rear wheel um yeah so those are your three key things but just before we get into that two things you should check on your bike before you start trying to [Music] whip yo that's so good two key things to check on your bike before you start trying to get a bit sideways first spoke tension you should obviously keep on on top of this but particularly your rear wheel if you've got loose Spokes and you start Landing sideways your rear wheel will not last very long so make sure your spokes are generally sort of tight all round as much as you can and then the second thing is tire pressure um if you run really low tire pressures you know ride a lot of tech um that's great but you may find when you're doing the carve to try and get a bit more whipped that if they're really low they're going to sort of you get a bit of tire roll so the bike will squirm a bit under you which adds a bit of well unpredictability to the bike so my devic go up to sort of plus 20 even 25 tire pressure if you're not already just to make sure in terms of PSI sorry um just to make sure that you're not necessar getting that to make maybe the bike a bit more stable when you're kind of carving it a bit that would uh there's kind of two basic tips but also general make sure there's no crank play pedals are tight no playing your headset you want your bike to be as um generally in good shape anyway obviously [Music] yes yo oh yeah one last thing before you start trying to get whipped find the right jump you might be tempted to do a step up uh cuz obviously gives you big air time and then you've got the landing coming to you if you land a bit side ways I would suggest and obviously you'll go to it now finding a table that's got a nice wide takeoff and Landing for carving either way um and it's got a kind of flattish lip to it cuz you'll find that's a bit easier with most step-ups I have a steep lip so you've got to pop and then kind of whip if that makes sense um so let probably start with a nice table with a nice flat transition you want a nice wide takeoff and particularly wide Landing so if going a bit across here and there to help make it easier so find the right [Music] jump oh one very last thing which direction are you going to whip so if you are left foot forward you would typically turn the bars to the [Music] right and if you are right foot forward you turn the bars to the left however if it feels more natural to do one way or the other that's what I would encourage so whatever feels and one way will feel easier or more natural or less forced and whichever way that is Go With It effectively that's sure that's my best advice in that sense don't fight it so you've check your spoke tension tire pressure is good you found a nice jump you're happy with with and you know which way you're going to whip obviously make sure you just come through the jump in the first place but your first step um so Step One is the pre- Whip or carving basically so if you're going to whip to the left of a jump you want to kind of come up to it on the right hand side as your Riders right and then obviously carve Riders left into it and obviously vice versa if you want to carve to the right you come in from the left carve to the right um and that's where wide jump will help um you can kind of snake it a bit so kind of come into it and then almost kind of kind of turn at the last minute you may find something like that helps give you a natural sort of movement or momentum back to carve that way the other thing is to think about it is kind of reach with your arms and this will move into the second point the snap of the whip but if you think about it if you want to go that way and if you were like jumping for something you push your arms out that way similarly do it when you're trying to transfer each way uh there's your cool sort of arm movements for you but try that first to get the transfer across and then you can start maybe getting a bit more whipped which moves on to number two the snap step two to make your whips especially stinky um this is where I'm going to refer you to so generally you would say turn the bars yes but no so this is where I ref ref you to my wrist diagram so obviously you think turn the bars your wrist don't really want to kind of go that way it's quite awkward left or right um so it's more about what I would say rolling the wrists and folding the bike so rather than when you get up in the air trying to turn that way and obviously you can push your arms and this is way you end up kind of punching that way kind of punching that way so you CU you can't really turn your wrist too much but as you kind of Reach Out out cuz you want to turn your arms there is arm movement so turning the bars is is correct but you want to actually kind of think about as more folding the bike than turning the bars roll your wrists so don't turn roll as you go over similarly so pull this wrist kind of let it roll down this one roll over let them kind of come into you and here again is the cool wrist movement so not turning rolling and actually kind of almost pull it over so you're like folding the bik B rather than turning the bike in the air that's that's what I find I'm doing more I think that's kind of the secret is that kind of snap movement and if it's if you're riding an ebike it's not about strength it's technique but you'll need more Force because of the way they're naturally more stable so you need more Force to unle unsettle them um and I actually love my full value bik you can kind of just go who you're really sort of cranking because of the way it kind of generally goes um and then but a lighter trail bike obviously St start off don't just yank it um that's the thing but as much as you got the snap the other thing is use your head as an anchor so you are not moving your head you're not whipping your head with it your head is your anchor your arms your hips bars they move around your head your head is always pointing at the landing and you can turn your head a bit in when you're getting the bike back round help kind of Bring It round but never kind of whip your head you that's when you're going to start doing more of a 180 which um it's a very different trick um don't confuse the two and def not um yeah but I think that's your key thing during the sort whip phase in the air the snap you head to the anchor and you roll the wrists and fold the bike don't turn the bars well you're turning the bars but it's more of a fold and a roll than a turn um yeah [Music] and the third and final step rid is so you've got your bike whipped out you've you've kind of rolled it over and folded it over you then have to obviously get it back in because you don't want to land sideways key is from that I call it a recoil it's kind of an unwinding but I think recoil sounds better as soon as you've kind of got it round at the point where it kind of you're happy or you feel this kind of you know bit bit or of you've gone far enough it's just literally turning the bars and as long as your hips and your um you know your body's loose and relaxed and your wrists relaxed as long as you get the bar and the front wheel as it comes down is poin in the right direction the back will follow and you can even land a bit sideways and get away with it or kind of snap around I'm not encouraging that there are you kind of get some that feel good some that you know you've pushed it too far and that's where your rear wheel pays the price quite often but that's the point is just turn the bars naturally like a little recoil snap after um and then the bike will follow and make sure your wrists are nice and loose feel free to loosen your wrists a bit in the air so they'll be you'll be gripping to obviously pop and take off but the minute you start kind of pulling it just kind of loosen them a bit you know loose wrists really help um the more relaxed you are in that sense the better as well um but yeah try and get it back round but the point is start progressively you know pull it a bit then you can start kind of cranking it a bit more over time and then you'll start to feel the back end coming round and you'll be more comfortable Swinging The Swinging the wheel and again you can turn your head a bit into it to help get it around but as long as you got that front wheel Landing straight generally the bike will come around anyway even if you land a little bit crooked um yeah that's the I think that should kind of key fre steps do let me know if that helps riders or if you've got any tips or anything you think I've forgot or anything like that I'd be really Keen to hear from you and it's not that I'm claiming to be a whip Master it's more if you look at the start of my channel when I was kind of more turning the bars and tweaking you'll notice now they're kind of it definitely feels to me there's some progression in the whip there um and I look forward to more cuz I think that's the the whip is a trick there I think it progresses with the rider over time so I'm guessing my whips will look different in another couple of years um uh but we'll see won't we I guess is the plan but um thank you so much for watching this is again guidance tips you know if you want your whips like seminar or gold stone or Sam Pilgrim or Remy mellia I mean the point is I would I would encourage you first to just try throwing the bike see what your kind of natural instinct or style wants to do and then go from there but you know if you want your whips to look a certain way great but I would encourage you just to kind of find your own whip because I think it is kind of a personal trick to a rider in a sort of strange way um anyway um yeah thank you for watching as always uh look forward to hearing any comments or and if this has helped anyone do let me know cuz that's kind of the point I would be very stoked if one person is getting a bit more whipped as a result of this definitely worth it thanks for watching oh ride your bike yo
