hey there i'm bailey and welcome to my channel where we discuss all the tips and tricks necessary for you to live a life of adventure so if you are wondering how to use the msr pocket rocket 2 this is the video for you so one of my goals here at my channel is to help people get started with backpacking without having to take a class you know learning from the internet because that's how i actually learned how to backpack is i like basically learned everything i know from facebook and the internet and i want to pass that along to other hikers so we're going to be talking about how to use the msr pocket rocket 2 in case this is new to you and you were just getting started and want to know how to use the stove properly so the msr pocket rocket 2 is really handy because it's this nice super small stove right it doesn't weigh a whole bunch great for backpacking and through hiking really popular in the backpacking community i'm not going to go into all specifics on why i use it but it is really nice because it has an off switch right has a valve so you can turn it off so it's kosher during fire stage 2 fire bans it's also nice because it's separate from your cook pot so you can change out pots and clean your pot easily and your igniter won't break because your igniter does not exist and you use a lighter instead so that's kind of nice as well but basically the main things you need to know about using the msr pocket rocket 2 is that first of all if you have that little piece of plastic case that it comes in obviously i don't first thing you should do is just get rid of it like recycle it i'll say recycle it don't throw it away recycle it whatever find another use for it get rid of it store your pocket rocket too and your cook pot like i do it takes up a lot less space that way so i do want to say that ahead of time step two once you get rid of that we're gonna go ahead and unfold this bad boy so the first thing i usually do is i take the valve unfold it and i turn it off so i don't forget that way when i screw it on later the valve is already off and then the second part of that is going to be unfolding the arms this can be a little bit uh tricky at first once once you get used to it's not bad but basically you're going to kind of take the arms swing them out like towards the valve maybe on this one and then back and then turn it up so that the feet are running like perpendicular to the part where the flame comes out and then you'll do that with the other two legs and again i mean you want to be careful but it takes a little bit more work and effort than you would think there are little like nuts on here you can see where you can tighten and loosen if you have to but i've never had to do that after three years of use on mine so step number i think we're on three now honestly i'm losing track you'll need some fuel to make this work obviously this is just the part that makes the flame out the msr pocket rocket you need actual fuel to make it run any isobutane will work i personally use the four ounce canisters because it fits in my cook pot and i don't use i don't drink coffee so i don't really ever use more than that but you could use the eight ounce as well especially for like car camping or if you are a big coffee drinker and the other thing you need to know about these is that it doesn't really matter what brand you buy this one is the msr brand but the jeff boyle ones work they're all they're all the same they all are compatible as far as i know with the pocket rocket too so you don't need msr to go with msr pocket racket as far as the cap i've heard that you really actually don't need to use these you can throw this away if you want to go even lighter i don't think the weight makes that big of a difference the really the only purpose is to keep like dirt and stuff out of these so that they last a little bit longer it's up to you on that then you'll want to take your pocket rocket take your feel without the cap you'll notice that there's two spots with threads right on the top right on the bottom put them together i usually like will stick it upside down because i have a little bit easier time getting the threading to catch right away and then you will want to make sure that it's as tight as possible once you thread it on usually you'll hear that like little hiss that's just when it's breaking the seal and then it reseals when it sticks on and this is also why it's important to make sure that you turn the valve off that way once you stick it on the valve is shut you're not losing gas all over the place now this next thing i would do if you haven't already is to prepare whatever you're going to be cooking so if you need to filter some water or you need to prep anything for what you're going to be cooking go ahead and do that now and have it all ready to go before you light the flame this just ensures that you are going to be wasting a lot less fuel which is really important if you're going to be in the back country right especially if you're using your coupon all the time there was a couple times this last summer on st louis loop where since i had cashed all my food beforehand i only had limited fuel and i was relying on cooking since i wasn't going into town and never eating hot meals so it was really important to make sure i was conserving as much fuel as possible and not wasting it so once you have all your water ready to go then we can go ahead and light your msr pocket rocket on fire so we can cook stuff right like who doesn't like fire so there's a couple different tools you can use to accomplish this a lot of people just use bic lighters because they are super light super readily available you can buy them at stores easily for through hiking at general stores and stuff this is what i use for a long time and the nice thing too is even though it helps to have gas in them if they run out of gas in them you can still use them to let your stove on fire because you just need the spark you can also consider maybe if you are like kind of a survivalist carrying some sort of flint this is more what i've been doing recently especially just being in alaska but it doesn't really make a difference it's probably heavier i actually haven't checked and maybe i'll do that in a second but yeah you can also use flint as well to get the job done you'll want to turn your valve off i usually turn it until i can just start hearing the gas hissing out of the top of the stove i don't want it to be going too high because then the spark won't catch will just get like blown away essentially and you don't want it so low that there's no gas coming out of the stove for the spark to catch on so i usually start until i just hear hiss and then i try a couple times to get catch by taking the lighter or the flint and holding it above where the feet are in that area be sure to watch your fingers don't be right on top of it because once it catches a big spout of flame is going to come out and burn you so do be careful about where your fingers are if it doesn't catch right away then maybe try turning it up a little bit catch a couple times turn it down you just want to play with the valve a little bit to get the amount of gas coming out until you can get it to light i back it off a little bit so i can save fuel and then i take my pot and stick it on top and let it do its thing you should know too that what i've noticed is if you have your pocket rocket turned up as high as it will go because you're trying to cook really fast i've had some issues with some titanium pots getting really hot on the handles when i do that so i do tend to cook on low i haven't done any tests yet to see if that's the most efficient or not so if you know if that's the most efficient is to have it on low i'd love to hear in the comments but yeah so i turned it down all the way to you know to like the low setting to cook and then i find a spot that's very stable so this is super important if you're hiking in some place like california or colorado or oregon where we're very fire prone right is you want to make sure that you're not going to have your whole cook set up fall over and set the forest on fire so i usually try to find a fairly flat level spot if there's like grass or snow or something i try to kind of dig it in to make it a little bit more stable around my pot and then you can just make sure that it's cooking i try to kind of keep an eye on it and not like walk away either that way it doesn't fall over especially because your pot isn't connected it can make it a little less stable especially depending on how big your pot is so just do be cognizant of that and then when you're done usually what i do is i turn it off once i'm done cooking eat and then come back and disassemble it that way the parts have had it time to cool down and then you can also just make sure that you are grabbing your stove at the base by the threads to um unswivel to detach it from your fuel um because it'll be hot there but a little less hot if it hasn't had a lot of time to cool down then you will unthread it from your fuel and then disassemble it basically in the opposite order so fold your legs back down again kind of have to finagle with it until you get used to it and then last of all turn the valve back to like halfway and then fold it to the side that is the amazon pocket racket too do you have specific questions about how to use this bad boy do you have different thoughts or think i did something wrong i would love to hear you know and learn more down in the comments we can all benefit from that if you found this video helpful i would definitely appreciate a thumbs up that just lets me know that i should keep making more videos like this like
