this video i'm going to show you how to use an electric hand planer and we're going to do it right now [Music] so this right here is an electric hand planer before we get too far into this i want to talk about this this is a very simple tool but very awesome this was my grandfather's actually and it has a base and it has a blade right here you can adjust that blade and basically it takes off a little bit of material at a time just like this now this is basically the same thing but it has a few upgrades and we have the benefit of electricity now i know for some people it's a little intimidating using a power tool like this they often have really sharp blades that spin really fast and can do some damage if you're not careful that's why i'm making this video the more you know about a tool the safer it is to use let's talk about the basic elements of an electric can planer this one is actually a ryobi and i'm not sponsored by a ryobi i just love it and is it ryobi or is it ryobi let me know in the comments the number one thing to know about this is to keep your hands away from here this is where the blades are if you spin it there's one there's another keep your digits away from these blades so if we take the dust collector off on the bottom we have this plate here and then we have what's called a front shoe and on that shoe we have an adjustment right now this is set to zero and what that means is as you put your piece of wood here you can see the blade is not touching that piece of wood however when you dial this up you have 0 1 48 1 24 1 16 so these are different increments of how much material will be cut off of a piece of wood as you can see here that's how much would be cut off if we go to the maximum amount an eighth inch on this planner you can see it'll take off an eighth of an inch another thing you'll see here is the dust collection system and the outlets and if you switch this like this the dust is going to be flying out this way and then you can see it close like that and it's going to be flying out this way so if we put our bag on here our dust collecting bag that's going to catch some sawdust there another thing you'll notice is at the bottom this has what's called a kickstand and that is so you can put the planter down without damaging the blade or the blade damaging whatever you put this down on you'll also notice this has a safety right here that you need to push this button in in order to pull this trigger that way you don't accidentally set this off and hurt yourself so whenever you're using this make sure you hold this down when you're ready to go and then pull the trigger so let's see this thing in action we're going to do a pass on this 2x6 and it's a good idea to wear safety glasses while doing this the plane is plugged in now [Music] basically what that did was take off just a little material off the top here and one tip for you is that when you're doing this it's better to take off just a little bit at a time don't go the maximum setting just go a little bit you can go multiple passes past something like this and just as an example what i'm going to do is i'm going to want to take off this profile this has here it has round edges i want to get this to be completely flat so i'm going to take a couple more passes with my planer to make that flat so in order to make a good pass with this planer what you want to do is starting here you want to put more pressure in the front as you're going along so you go along go along go along and then once you get here where there's enough material to support both of these bases you can put more pressure straight down and then towards the end you want to lift up if you don't do that i'll show you a couple things that can happen over here if you are putting more pressure on the end of this planer and your planer is tilted like this what you're going to get is a groove cut out of here like this [Music] and then over here if you don't hold this straight and lift up a little bit just slightly you could get a groove going down this way like this so what you want to do is hold the planer nice and flat throughout this entire thing so the blade takes off an even amount of material each time we're going to make several passes here just to make take away our profile like i was talking about and make this nice and nice and square [Music] as you can see after a couple passes i made this nice and square and it's nice and even all the way down the number one thing i use hand planers for is doors if you've seen my kitchen pantry remodel i use this on the doors just to take off a little bit of material to get the doors closing perfectly this thing works awesome now sometimes you're gonna have to make an uneven line sometimes you have to take off more in the middle then at the end and vice versa and the way you do that is very carefully you have to work with this kickstand what you're going to want to do is take your planer and start here push the trigger and then very carefully ride that kickstand down and let this drop to take off some material in the middle and then you can lift up like this and that way you'll be able to take off some material in the middle and not so much at the ends or like i said vice versa so it'll look something like this [Applause] as you can see here there's a little bit of a gap in the middle but then even at both ends after you do that and you have the general profile that you need you can sand it out you'll be good to go now looking at the bottom of this planer you have this groove right here and what that's going to do for you is you're going to be able to use that on an edge like this to create different profiles on the edge of material and i'll show you what that looks like [Applause] now most planers will come with a guide that looks a little something like this let's hook this up i got the planer off and you take this out right here you attach this just like that and then you can adjust this guide any way you want so that a certain section of whatever piece of material you're using will be cut and then on this side it won't be cut and i'll show you what that looks like here we go [Music] and that is what that guide's for you can see we didn't cut anything over here but we did cut over here so there you go just another tip these blades hate nails so if you can avoid nails use a nail set knock them down and if you're using a lot of reclaimed wood you don't want to have this hit a nail head because then you're going to replace the blade and i think i'm going to do another video on replacing the blade on this uh it's not a huge process but there is a little bit to it it comes with its own tool and you basically loosen these bolts here you pull this out that's what this is for this little mechanism this whole thing comes out and you can either flip the blade because the blades are double-sided or you can get a brand new blade that is about the rundown of an electric hand planer i really hope this helps out because i just want you guys to be safe and know how to use tools like this if you're interested in this exact hand planer i'll leave a link in the description over to where you can get it a lot of these planners are pretty much the same these these tips will be universal for a lot of planners if you're interested in some of my other videos you can click hereish and hereish and go check those out i really appreciate it and if this is your first time and you liked what you saw go ahead and subscribe there's a red button down there we'll see you next time thanks for watching
