today we're going to be installing a tile floor in our bathroom yeah it's a pretty big job but you can do it with the right preparation and time now there are a lot of different ways to install tile but i'm going to show you the method that i like to use it's important to remember that tiling a shower or bathtub is different than tiling a floor so even if you've done that project you still want to review these steps before doing a floor the most important step is preparing your subfloor properly so here we're starting with a bear sub floor in our new bathroom but if you're starting with an old tile floor then take a chisel and remove the old tile and then you want to take a floor scraper like this and remove any old motor the main thing you're looking for is a level even subfloor make sure you plug the sewer pipe with a rag to keep any sewer gas from leaking in before you begin you want to be sure you have enough tile for the job measure your width and length and multiply those numbers together to get your square footage add an additional 10 percent to have some extra in case of broken tiles or mistakes now let's take a second to talk about mortar so mortar is the adhesive that holds the tile to the floor and the mortar that's used with tile is called thinset mortar so we will be using thinset to attach this membrane to the floor and to attach our tiles to the membrane this membrane is called the schluter ditra uncoupling membrane and allows for expansion and contraction under the tile without cracking the floor for our project today we're going to be using an unmodified thinset mortar now if you're not using a membrane like this you're attaching your tiles to a cement board you're going to want to use a modified thinset a modified thinset is polymer added and increases your bond strength now lay out your membrane fleece side down and mark the edges so you know where to spread the thinset use your utility knife to cut around any pipes now we can mix up our unmodified thinset you know it's the right consistency when you can draw your trial through and the ridge just stay standing up we will work one section at a time so the thinset doesn't dry before we can get to it spread the thinset onto the floor with a smooth side of the trowel covering the whole area evenly then use the notch side of the trowel to comb the mortar now roll your membrane out and press it down into the thinset using a wooden float to waterproof the seams we will use this tape called kerdi-band spread some thinset and embed the tape into it with your trowel making sure you have at least a two inch overlap on each sink make sure you cover the seams between the membrane sections and the seams along the walls if you have a finished wall like ours you can see along the walls with a caulk like this kerdi-fix and now we want to mark some reference lines for our tiles start by measuring two opposite walls and snapping a chalk line between the center points then do the same for the remaining walls and this will give you your starting point you can spray some hairspray on the chalk to help it stay on the membrane now dry fit your tiles to check your layout and use tile spacers to make sure your gaps are correct you'll want to leave a quarter inch gap along the outside edges for expansion mix tiles from different boxes to help keep the color consistent throughout the room if you find you have small pieces of tile on one end you can slide the layout to one side to give your edges more width and mark new reference lines now it's time to install our tile start by mixing up some more unmodified thinset and we're looking for a peanut butter consistency again we will work in one section at a time and we will start in the center spread the mortar evenly making sure you're feeling the cavities in the membrane comb the mortar with a trowel at a 45 degree angle lay down one tile on your reference line in the center twist it slightly while pushing down to make sure you're getting full adhesion move along your reference line placing spacers between each tile every couple of tiles pull one up to make sure there is full contact with the thinset if not you can back butter the tiles like this to get more coverage use a wet sponge to wipe off any thinset that gets on the face of the tile check for high spots occasionally and gently use a rubber mallet to even them out when you have to cut tiles a tile cutter works well for simple cuts curves can be cut with a tile nipper and holes are best cut with a tile hole saw if you're going to be doing lots of cuts you may want to use a wet towel saw which will make short work at the cutting just like the outside edges you'll want to leave a quarter inch gap around any pipes as well and our tile's in now we need to let the thinset dry for 24 hours before we add grout grout is the material we use to fill in the gaps between the tiles and it comes in different styles and colors press the grout into the joints with a rubber float and then pull the grout across the lines diagonally removing the excess now wait about 20 minutes then wipe the grout lines with a wet sponge and clean water now once the grout is in you'll want to wait 72 hours to walk on it but follow your manufacturer's recommendations to be sure a grout haze remover will help you remove any haze left on the tile faces apply silicone sealant to the expansion gaps then later after three weeks you can apply grout sealant to help protect your grout once you've installed your baseboards your tile floor is complete this looks fantastic i think our room is going to turn out great you see with some time and some patience this is a project that you can tackle at home with a little help from lowe's
