hey guys welcome back to rudder renovations where today we're going to learn how to properly prepare a generator for long-term storage here we go the first step to storing your generator is treating the fuel that's left over in the carburetor and in the gas tank now my generator happens to be empty but if yours isn't you can always disconnect the fuel line from the carburetor and drain it into an empty gas can which i'll show you later in the video or you can add the stabilizer directly to the generator's gas tank if you know how much fuel is in there with any gas engine that you use infrequently it's best to use non-ethanol gasoline from the research that i've done whether you're using gasoline with or without ethanol it's best practice to run fuel with a fuel stabilizer in it before storing your engine long term this particular stabilizer is said to keep your fuel good for two years so we'll go ahead and squeeze 12 milliliters of it pour it into our gallon gas tank shake it up and then we'll go ahead and fill up our generator all right now that we have our fuel in we can go ahead and put the power on go ahead and turn the fuel to the on position and we'll let it run for five minutes because we switched the fuel switch to the off position the carburetor should be empty but there's still going to be fuel left in the gas tank now the fuel stabilizer states that it should keep the gas good for up to two years but because it might be longer than two years before we use this generator again i'm going to disconnect the fuel line from the carburetor and empty the gas tank into a gas can squeezing this crimp ring should allow you to easily remove the fuel line after you have the fuel line removed and put in the gas can you can turn the fuel switch back to the on position and let it continue to drain until the generator is empty once the generator is empty you can go ahead and turn your fuel switch back to the off position and then connect it back to the carburetor the next step to storing your generator is changing out the oil using a 12 millimeter socket we're gonna go ahead and remove this drain plug if you haven't already put it up on some bricks you can get your oil pan underneath it making sure that it's going to catch any and all oil that comes out and we'll go ahead and replace the plug so we can put some new oil in there go ahead and take our oil fill cap out get our clean funnel there this particular generator uses 10 w30 and it only uses 0.6 of a quart it shows you the level on here and obviously 0.6 is gonna be a little bit past that half of a quart line a rule of thumb for the level of this if you can see it basically at the base of the threads that's how much you want you don't want to overfill it it's hard to tell from the camera but it's exactly at the full mark where we want to be once you know with that you can get your shop towel or old rag go ahead and wipe down the generator where all the oil spilled last step to storing your generator is to remove the spark plug and put a little bit of oil in the cylinder just to lubricate it so it doesn't seize up so you'll pull the spark plug cable off of it and your generator might have come with the exact size or this little tool to remove it you would stick a screwdriver in there and then you could turn and release the spark plug in this instance if you have the right socket you can just use it and it's a this one's a 13 16 inch after you have the spark plug removed you can put one half ounce of oil in the chamber and i found that a child's medicine syringe works perfect for this you use the pull start we're going to cycle the cylinder over a couple times not going to do it really hard we just want to do it very slowly because if you do it hard it's going to force oil out everywhere we're just trying to coat the cylinder with that oil make sure that it's running smoothly whenever we go to start it back up the next time we use it it's not going to be frozen solid now that we've turned it over a few times we're going to go ahead and replace the spark plug after you have the spark plug tightened in there you can go ahead and tighten it up make sure it's tight and snug once it is you'll take your spark plug cable put it back on there and then you'll be ready to store it all right guys i hope this helped you out if you have any questions comment below if you like it like it please subscribe and we'll see you next time peace and god bless you
