so today i'm opening up my walls and i'm going to remove all this old half inch copper pipe and replace it with brand new pecks now there's one spot in the basement where this copper is coming right out of the concrete so i'm going to have to just cut it off and then solder on an adapter like this one here so that i have a way to connect my pecs now hopefully that will all go well and i want to you know burn down my house [Music] before you cut into any lines make sure to shut off your main water supply and drain out all the water now here i'm using a mini tube cutter because i don't have room to use a full size one i clamp it on turn the wheel until it's tight twist it around once or twice then give the wheel another twist to tighten it further i keep doing this again and again tightening the wheel each time until i've cut through the copper to prep the copper for the adapter i take some sandpaper and clean up the area i'm going to solder onto a better way to do this is to use a four in one wire brush tool but typically you need to use this before the copper is ever installed so that you have space to twist it right around you can however use the tool to clean out the adapter before soldering you always want to dry fit your adapters before adding any soldering paste for the paste you want to add just a thin coat around the clean copper some plumbers like to also add a thin coat inside the adapter piece i've done it both ways and i've never had a leak either way now the easiest way to gauge how much soldering wire you need to apply a good rule of thumb is just to add the amount that's the width of the pipe so for example my copper is half an inch wide so i'm going to bend over half inch on my wire i slide on my adapters light my propane torch and i'm going to use a piece of old cement board here so i don't burn my house down i want to keep the blue part of the flame an inch or two from the adapter and then test the opposite side with my soldering wire every five seconds or so to check to see if it's hot enough yet ideally if you use the right amount of solder it'll fill all the way around the adapter and won't drip down for the other one here i'll use about three quarters of the wire instead of the half inch just to show you what happens and you'll see how it drips if you do happen to drip you can just wipe it off with a rag just remember that this thing is going to be steaming hot for a while so never ever touch it with your bare hands until it's had a chance to cool down once everything is cool i add my crimp rings to my pecs and slide the pecs onto the attachments you want to keep your crimp rings about an eighth of an inch from the end of your pecs and then use your crimp tool to crimp the rings in place make sure your tool is lined up square and covers the ring completely and only crimp the ring once and now that that's all done i can continue installing my pex pipe throughout the house i don't know that much about plumbing but luckily my dad does and i hope you do now too if you like this video make sure to leave a thumbs up and maybe consider subscribing hit the little bell to get notified when we put out a new video thanks for watching and i'll see you next time bye
