holy smokes welcome back i am going to teach you how to sharpen any knife scary sharp and the best thing is you do not have to have any previous sharpening skills whatsoever to do this and no i am not talking about those cheap pull through or expensive electric sharpeners the sharpener i am talking about is this the work sharp guided field sharpener i have spent a lot of money on knife sharpeners and this is by far my favorite and my recommendation for the general public for number one the price it's 29 number two the size number three it has a five stage sharpening system and number four my absolute favorite it sharpens fish hooks well this really isn't my favorite feature but number five is it has a guided system which makes where anyone can use this and get fast results by the way stay to the end of the video for some bonus tips when it comes to sharpening and you guys will want to know these we are going to start with stage one and progress through the different stages to get those crazy sharp results i am using a dull kitchen knife which it can't even cut paper right now so let's get this sharpened now to start i want you to place the side of the knife flat on the guide closest to the handle just like this and you notice the cutting edge is on the abrasive now what we are going to do is to push the knife away and along the abrasive surface keeping the same angle just like this now let's do this again and we are going to repeat this around 5 to ten strokes okay i am filling the burr all the way down the edge right now which feels like a catch so we are going to flip the knife and just like in the first step we are going to use the same process put the knife on the guide and just take it slow and keep the same angle just like this it's that simple since we raised a burr on this side i am going to alternate between the strokes to help smooth the bevels out this step isn't necessary but i do feel it gives better results so let's start here and go to the other side just like this guys this is simple put the knife on the guide and push away keeping the same angle now let's move on to stage two we are going to turn the sharpener over to the fine diamond plate this is where we will begin smoothing out the freshly cut bevels from stage one we are going to repeat the same steps from above laying the knife on the side and following the guide now it's time to flip to the other side let's alternate as i do this i am feeling this edge gets smoother and smoother now we are going to move the stage 3 which is honing as we flip the sharpener over on the side we can see the ceramic rods here this is where we start cleaning that edge up we have three options to choose from and if i turn this over you can see on the red knob that we have c for course f for fine and the fish hook symbol for the fish hooks which is pretty cool but i will not be sharpening any fish hooks now we are going to turn this to c and as i turn this i want you to notice how the ceramic rod turns this is so cool the edge guides work just the same way but they're right here and right here and we're going to do just like before we're going to lay the blade of the knife on the edge guide and push away just like this what is so cool about this stage is that it is actually putting a 22 degree micro bevel on the original 20 degree bevel from the previous stages which gives this a huge advantage in cutting i haven't seen any other sharpeners do this and believe me i can tell the difference now we are going to move on to stage four fine honing we are going to take the red knob and turn it to fine which is f on the red dial notice the black on the ceramic rods where the steel is coming off at now this is already extremely sharp but we have one more step to complete and that is stage five the stropping this is probably one of the oldest methods for keeping sharp knives shaving sharp you can see that we have a little leather pad right here and the green compound which is called rouge it's really like a liquid abrasive which gives the blade an even finer polish and instead of pushing the knife across we are going to pull it now so put the knife on the edge guide which is a little backwards and just pull back while pulling down just like that there we go and this is going to put a nice polish on the knife and this is just going to knock all the burrs off at a micro level and believe it or not this right here is so important for your knives if you want it screaming sharp okay this is ready to be tested you guys ready let's see how this cuts the magazine paper holy smokes this is insanely sharp guys oh my gosh wow this is crazy sharp guys and this magazine paper is some flimsy stuff now i would show you a shaving test but i don't have much hair on my arms from testing my other knives but we aren't through i need to share some tips with you when it comes to sharpening a knife with this system number one if you have previously used your knife with this sharpener before do not start at stage one coarse diamond plate unless you need further reprofiling of the blade or you need to repair a chip on the edge number two you can blunt your tip if you run the blade of your knife off like this so this is not the correct way to do it you want to sharpen and go right there and stop number three the diamond plates are held in place by a magnet and are replaceable in my experience these plates last a very long time and you won't have to replace them for a while but it is nice that you can order new plates when you need to number four for all my techie friends i sharpened this kitchen knife at a 20 degree angle and most kitchen knives are sharpened at 17 degrees if you are a stickler for perfection and want a true 17 degree angle i recommend the larger guided sharpening system from work sharp it's like the big brother to this one but all in all this one's a little faster for the big question should you guys buy the sharpener you know i believe at its 29 dollar price point and the five stage sharpening system and the portability of this you are not going to go wrong with the results that you get and i have used sharpeners up to four times this amount and i am getting the same if not better results in some circumstances with this sharpener don't be fooled by the small size you guys can still sharpen larger knives on this in fact look at this video from my friend matt culbertson who told me about the sharpener he is sharpening this huge gurkha kukri machete on the sharpener after doing some field testing with it and he is bringing it back to a razor's edge and he's doing it on the small diamond blade with all of these features packed into one small portable sharpener i don't think you guys are going to go wrong with this at all if you guys would like to check this out i will leave a amazon affiliate link below where you can purchase this as well as check out some of the other sharpeners and knives that i recommend and use don't forget to smash the like button and you guys subscribe because well you'll just like being subscribed i'll see you in the next video bye
