How To Set Up Body Armor & Plate Carrier - James Yeager Explains

the way things are going right now you might think it's a good idea to have a little extra protection so um i did and i actually bought a armor set from ar500 about several months back and it's been sitting in a box because if you've seen my channel very much you know i don't know nothing about an armor so i figured out i don't know nothing about birthing no babies yeah so anyway i'm here with james jagger he's going to tell us uh kind of help straighten me out on that that's what coming up next here on survival on purpose welcome back to survival on purpose your home for trustworthy information and gear reviews related to camping survival and general preparedness for regular folks my name is brian thanks for joining me and i'm here my friend james yeager who who's kind enough to uh not only help me figure out how to uh actually put put this thing on and put it together but it kind of you know hooked me up with some little some what i needed to really make it worthwhile okay well this seems like another good spot to do a sportsman's guide military surplus minute where i try to take about a minute to give you some examples of the kind of stuff you can find on the sportsman's guide military surplus site sportsman sportsman's guide has the largest military surplus store in the world and that i want to show you today is just an example again of the kind of stuff you can expect to find on there and i really want to show you this particular item because i've had this shirt now for about 10 years and i bought this on sportsman's guide sure this was a british military surplus i think it was a new surplus and it's a base layer it's a turtleneck thermal shirt and i bought i like six of these because i bought a couple at first i liked them so much i bought some more but like i said this is something i bought 10 years ago i still wear them every winter so really solid stuff so you can not only can you find some unique stuff on sportsman's guys military surplus side but you can also find some really well made high quality stuff so anyway hopefully this has been about a minute but i just don't want to show i wanted to show you that because um i've been shopping at sportsman's guide for a number of years and i really like their military surplus side they just have some really cool stuff on there so anyway hopefully it's been about a minute we're going to wrap this one up and take you back to the video so james thank you so much man for taking time we're up here doing some training and obviously we're excited to respond so that's cool well you know the thing is and you know we you hear in the class all the time it's more important to not be shot than it is to shoot the bad guy i learned that today you you learned it the other day you concreted it in today but uh and body armor is important and and right now it's it's like it's available i mean yeah you might there might be a back order or something but like that it wasn't that many years ago where joe civilian body armor wasn't available to you right you know unless you bought secondary police body armor or something like that so it's actually pretty cool and um and um ar500 armor uh those guys uh they've trained with me like they're shooters they're like they're us they're they're it's not some big corporation when you like you see tyler on the videos that's the dude who owns a company like you know he's he's one of us he's a shooter he's a good guy uh so and that stuff's made out in out in arizona and you know it's phoenix i've been at the plant i've done videos like you see them making the plates and all that stuff it's not like imported stuff from another country or whatever and so it's putting putting good americans to work but i'm not trying to go on about that but it's a good company they're good people that's that's important yeah to me anyway yeah probably a lot of us yeah so i had this thing it was in a box and i said james can you show me how to do this i said get away yeah yeah so yeah he uh so can you just kind of go over the basics of what what how you got it kind of set up for me right so on on any kind of armor depending on what you're going to do with it whether you're defending your home or your homeland there's some there's some things like you need ammo on it and you need medical gear on it all the other things we can argue about or whatever whatever the case may be but if i'm carrying a gun and bullets might be going both ways i need bullets and i need band-aids and i think that should be without dispute the other stuff might be mission specific or you know geographically specific or something like that but that's that's long and short of it uh the pouches that that he's got on here uh ar 500 armor makes pouches but when he when he came he didn't have any and down the road i'm lucky enough to have as a neighbor john willis at soe and so john hooked us up with some pouches and so the first thing you see a nice guy first thing you have yeah first thing you might see is that these camos don't match it that's that's tan that's not even that's not even a camo it didn't match my shoes what's funny is if you look up the definition of camouflage and the definition of the word match they don't go together and so uh and it's another thing like i'm not trying to like try to be funny here but like the new guy always has matching stuff like the old the old grizzly guy like his all stuff is mix and match he's got duct tape on part of it and this you know this got paracord tying it on you know so um so it's kind of like what they what they call it with the guns battle battle worn well you know the the battle worn rigs like the real ones they don't look they don't match and they're not flashing and all that stuff but so i think people get kind of a little secret i came in here with a black reagan james blanket why'd you buy black don't buy black he said you look like an old man yeah only old people buy black rigs funny thing uh soe can't cannot give away black gear can't give it away one exception everybody buys black slings because they want the sling to match their rifle oh okay because i mean that's important man here we are um but uh but brian is not that short but i'm gonna have him stand on a pedestal the first time in my life i'm the tallest guy in the room uh but what we got here are uh soe uh direct action pouches and the reason i suggested those is they'll carry three ar mags which mags get heavy or they carry two ak mags so no matter kind of what's going on or what the fight might be about uh he'll be able to jam something in there this is a soe tear off medical patch it's all empty right now tear off may patch you can use it while it's still on the rig of course um or if necessary you could you can rip that off and throw it to a teammate or something like that or or take it off and use it yourself depending on on how big your uh your rig is your leg is you might be able to put this around your um i'll be able to put it around your wrist you know and to hold the stuff there while you're working on somebody you know so so it's kind of a neat little little bonus lesson there i didn't know that well i mean i don't know if anybody knows that i just kind of made that up so i got you turn what you step there uh admin pouch admin is gonna have all the stuff spare batteries for your flashlight um if you're old like us and you need a spare pair of glasses or a pen and pencil notepad all that little stuff um you know that might be uh that might be a thing and i'm not i'm not even joking on my rig my personal rig i've got a um a cell phone holder uh um beside that uh seriously if you turn all the way around this is a blackhawk pouch and just a general purpose pouch and it's got medical stuff in it but ultimately like uh like uh he's got gloves and a chamog and stuff like that so stuff that you might want to use with your rig and you want it to be handy you might keep in here i wouldn't keep much in here that's going to stay when you're using the rig because if you get into a car or something it's going to be problematic laying against it unless it's your whole back then it really won't matter this is a a radio pouch but it it uh if you go to soe to buy it it's a 20 round pmag pouch but this will fit your yaesu your bail fang uv5r and stuff like that then what you would do is run the mic over the top and uh and then you can run a plug from your mic to your earbuds sorry come on around and then this is a general purpose pouch for whatever uh and we get gloves you got the soe sling um uh tourniquet patch you would slide this over your sling and you could put a tk4 or a ratchet tourniquet or whatever that like that in there and there's some you know mechanic gloves you should have gloves with your gear i mean you just you just should um but whatever you might need there's a smoke pouch and i'm gonna send brian home with a patriots uh patriot smoke gear smoke in case he needs that smoke is portable temporary concealment and so if you need to escape or move through an area or whatever putting smoke out means that people can kind of mask your movement and stuff like that you can get out there right short again but and uh people constantly say um well metal metal plates are too heavy um okay well let's say they're let's say they're let's say that they're 10 pounds too heavy what i'm gonna say is get in shape lose lose 10 pounds like look like lose 10 pounds yeah but they're probably not nearly as heavy wearing these metal plates on the outside he's wearing 240 grains of lead on the inside yeah i agree bro i asked what do you i ask people all the time that go well what armor do you have now because if you're telling me you don't want steel plates and and and you an air 500 armor makes you know they make a bunch of different things yeah it's not just steel but if you're if you're on a budget you know it's going to be steel and uh and still stops it better than a cotton t-shirt and so people that think about like shooting a steel target but you're not shooting a steel target like he might have another pouch here or whatever but if he gets shot here most of that's going to be absorbed um like in this stuff and and i'll tell you i'll take a speck of a jacket or something uh over a bullet through me and um and so and anything can spawn i mean you can shoot a rifle at water and it'll ricochet yeah so people act like there's something wrong with steel like it'll it'll spill off ceramic armor like there's no there's nothing that will stop a bullet that that won't that won't spawn yeah and once i've got it got anti-spawn coating so that's going to help some and it's not nice it's not very little money i mean and it's it's doesn't add that any weight to it so i'm i think when i bought and they got they got all kinds of sales so i think i paid around to just under 300 bucks i know for two plates and a carrier and a trauma pads because i you know i did everything i could sorry to interrupt you again he paid for this gear and you know when of course stuff that john goes for the s.o.e like he paid for the armor and i said brian you know i know those guys i could have probably got you a deal he's like i just wanted to get you know he's very humble you know but like he bought this i just want to make that clear the soe stuff i did get it from john for him but like in our in our business there's nothing free anyway nothing's really free yeah i know so so um man that that's really cool but while we're here chuck norris can give you three black eyes i just finished two days or actually i just finished six days of training did i took the fighting pistol again pass this time i did immediate action medical which was let me just tell you right now anybody out there that all if you're if you're one of those people who think rats tourniquets don't work come on down to media action medical wrap one around your get some wrap one around your arm right and wear it for 10 minutes and tell me it don't work because you don't have to wear it for 10 minutes i'm just saying as soon as it's done you can tell it works so they work tk4s work and if and anyway so there's that i'm tired of hearing that stuff and and then we just finished the fight today which was simply like um fight force on force a lot of a lot of simulations and scenarios with um simunition so or some uh that was actually a simulation simulation fx round okay like tiny little paintballs basically um so you can tell if you know if you're hit or not and wow i'm telling you they could tell if you were hit or not [Laughter] brian didn't do too good but but that was probably today yesterday were probably two of the most important days as far as as far as because you know you game all the stuff in your head you think i got this figured out and man you will learn real quickly if you got an ego you need to just check it because this is so important you need to know okay now i know really what i need to focus on and it's just about not being in denial yep and and and most people won't even show up for the class because of ego you know yeah because i mean does it hurt a little bit but it's not that big of a deal that's not what they're worried about hurting they're worried about hurting their ego oh man i'm telling you i came back one day yesterday and james was in the room and i'm like throwing my mask down and i was like hey what's up brian anyway he didn't even know i was there i was five feet from him he looked up like oh i was mad at myself and so if you think my one of the biggest thing i learned was if you think oh i got this figured out i've been playing and adrenaline stuff's not gonna bother me this is simulation i knew it was simulation i knew these when nobody was really going to shoot me or anything and like my heart is cranking up they tell me i did stuff i don't remember doing said stuff i don't remember saying it was um it's a really really eye-opening class and man i'm telling you even if you can't take fighting pistol right now the next chance whatever you get a chance to take first i'd say do it because man it was it was anyway i'm sorry i'm rambling guess what's uh like i usually do so anyway so um again just get ar 500 has the best deals on ammo i've seen that they're great they are armor armor yeah ar 500 yeah you said ammo i was like oh yeah they might have one too i don't know if they had something they could sell out right now i bet you on armor and they're really good folks and and it's it's cheap enough or low price enough that you can afford to protect your family and i'm telling you right now i mean you see the news you know what's going
