hello everyone this is linda of roti and rice today i am going to show you how to season a brand new wok before you use it for the very first time apart from this new wok you will also need a wire mesh scorer or steel wool some detergent canola or peanut oil a few slices of ginger and green onions let's get started first you want to give the wok a good scrub to remove the protective oil applied on the wok during the manufacturing process to prevent rusting using a wire mesh scorer and some detergent scrub the wok thoroughly inside and out [Music] then give it a good rinse [Music] and wipe it dry before you start make sure your kitchen is well ventilated if you have cleaned the wok properly there should be very little to no smoke turn on your stove to high and allow the wok to heat up move the wok slowly over the flame first the wok will start to change to a golden brown color [Music] and then do a steel blue color depending on your stove this can take anywhere between 20 to 30 minutes [Music] hmm [Music] the wok is now a nice steel blue color allow it to cool after 20 minutes it is time to oil the wok since this is a round bottom wok i am going to place a wok stand on this stove so that the wok is properly supported [Music] i'm going to turn on the stove to medium high and pour some oil into the wok i'm using canola oil rub a piece of paper towel with tongs over the entire surface of the wok [Music] [Music] then i'm going to add a few slices of ginger and some green onions i'll also add a little bit more oil [Music] so i am going to reduce the heat slightly so that the ginger and green onions will brow slowly and release their fragrance [Music] thanks so [Music] good [Music] after 10 minutes you can turn off the stove now you can remove all the ginger and green onions from the wok and i'm going to wipe it down with paper towels i'm going to allow this to cool and then we'll give it a quick rinse [Music] i am using a sponge with no detergent to clean the wok [Music] rinse and wipe dry with paper towel [Music] now it is time to heat up the wok again to make sure it is completely dry turn on the stove to medium heat after about two minutes when the wok is completely dry wrap a thin layer of oil over the surface of the rock with a paper towel this will protect the rock from rusting i only do this when the wok is new do this every time you use the wok over time the surface of your walk will darken and develop a beautiful patina when that happens it will be a joy to cook in a wok as it will become almost nonstick your wok is now ready for use after only two days of use the color of this wok has definitely darkened i know that if i use and care for it consistently a patina will soon develop i hope you will consider getting a wok for your kitchen because it is a very versatile piece of utensil you will get many years of use out of it if you like this video please give me a thumbs up and consider subscribing thank you so much for watching and i'll see you again soon
