hey youtube captain tech here in today's video i'll walk you through how to save a digital copy of a dvd on your mac let's go ahead and get started now considering macs that ship today don't have a dvd player we'll need to get an external one i picked this one up on amazon for about 25 bucks it's really compact and one thing that's really cool about it it has the old school usb cable as well as the usbc cable all in one so i'll have a link to purchase this from amazon in the video description below so just to preface the rest of the video we'll really need two pieces of software to complete this process first we'll need a piece of software that will allow us to decrypt the dvd and then the second piece of software which is handbrake will actually allow us to save the dvd to your computer so let's go ahead and get started with that first part the decrypting software i'll have a link to the download for this piece of software so the download has started for me and then next we need to actually put this in a particular library so that the decrypting software can be read and to do that we can just go ahead and click on somewhere on our desktop that's clear and then the finder should show up and in the finder we'll click on go and then we'll click go to folder and then we specifically want to go to this folder i'll have this also in the video description also one thing to note is that capitalization is really important here so make sure everything is lowercase so we'll go ahead and go to that particular folder and then next we're going to go back to our downloads folder and identify the software we just downloaded and then drag it into this folder so now we should be good with our decrypter all right now we can go ahead and proceed with getting our second piece of software which is handbrake i happen to have the site up here i'll also have a link in the description below for the actual download link but we can go ahead and get that software installed on the computer of course as with most mac applications we'll have to actually drag it to our applications folder so i'll actually go ahead and navigate to our applications folder first and then we can open from our downloads folder the handbrake application which we just installed and now we can then go ahead and drag handbrake into the applications folder and it should be installed all right now that we have handbrake installed on our computer we can go ahead and plug in our dvd player along with the dvd inside of it and then we can go ahead and actually open up handbrake and as we do that it should identify the dvd within our binder window here so we can locate that and then hit open and then next we'll get a notification from mac os that it can't find the developer of this open source piece of software we installed at the beginning the decrypter to get around this we'll go ahead and click on cancel here and then next we'll go ahead and click on the apple logo in the upper left hand corner we'll click on system preferences and then from here we'll go ahead and click on security in privacy then we'll need to click on this unlock button here you'll either need to use touch id or enter your password to unlock that and now we can actually override mac os and allow it to open up that decrypter so we'll click on this allow anyway option at this point we should be good but we'll need to actually restart handbrake so we'll close out of it we'll reopen it we'll tell it where the dvd is we'll click open this time we will hit open so it may take a few minutes to scan through the entire dvd so i'll come back once this part is done so at this point the video should show up in handbrake and now we can actually go ahead and play around with the quality of the final video so over here you'll see a slider and the way the slider works it's actually an exponential scale here as we get closer to zero on the right the file size increases exponentially but at the same time the quality also increases i think the best sweet spot is actually around 15 so i'm going to go ahead and select that of course you're free to play around with these settings you could try 5 20 and see how that that impacts your final file so at this point we should be in good shape we just selected our quality we are also going to have the final format of an mp4 so the last thing we can do here is change where the final video is going to get saved currently it's going to get saved in the movie section but i'm going to go ahead and actually change this to my desktop so i'm going to choose my desktop hit choose and then once we have all that sorted we can go ahead and click start now this may take a few minutes and it also depends on how fast your computer is so i'll get back once this is complete so handbrake just finished the process and as you can see now on my desktop i have a new file and if i open it up as you can see the the movie actually starts alright folks that's all i have for you today video was helpful like comment and subscribe your feedback's super important it helps me understand whether or not these videos are helpful and whether or not i should make similar content in the future also don't forget to check out some of my other related content up here that i think you'll find quite useful and with that thanks for watching and take care you
