parking a car inside a parking spot between two cars can be a challenging maneuver but we practice in the right technique you can Master it remember everyone lands at their own pace so don't feel discouraged if you need more practice in the long run patience and persistence will pay off in this video we will look at part 2 of how to reverse pack and as promised in part one we are reverse parking between two cars before we begin it's important to note that most of the steps presented in this video are quite similar to what we covered in the first reverse packing video however I've added another reference point that can come in handy especially when parking between two cars the link to the first reverse parking video where we park without cars is in the description section the first thing we will look at is the theory and after that I'll do the maneuver inside the car park between two packed Vehicles step one locate a parking spot Step 2 check the rear view mirror and the left side mirror and indicate left step 3 position your car about one meter or roughly three feet from the parked Vehicles step four now we drive past our Target parking spot then stop when our car passes the first line of the third parking spot from the one we want to park in so we pass parking spot one two then stop when our left side mirror reaches the first line of the third parking spot this is our first reference point and it's the same as the one we used in part one of the video remember it's important to position properly you don't want to be too close but you also don't want to be too far if you are unsure about the distance here is a helpful tip aim to leave about a door length between your car and the parked Vehicles this distance is roughly one meter to one meter and a half it's also important to ensure that your car is parallel with the parked Vehicles not angled like this or like that now we are ready to start the maneuver we first prepare observe then reverse to prepare we select the reverse gear to observe we look in our mirrors blind spots and physically look at the rear we then start the maneuver if it is safe to do so if someone is approaching from the front or overtaking us from behind we should stop then we need to see if they wait for us to park or if they will go around us but then some of you may ask why stop and wait we want to wait because when we turn the steering wheel the front of our car is going to move towards oncoming traffic this could cause a collision if we reverse while someone is overtaking US step five now to confirm that our first reference point is correct when we put the car in Reverse we should be able to see the left headlights of this car parked next to our Target parking spot through the passenger window we treat this as our second reference point and it's also an important one here's a quick tip in most small to medium Vehicles when the mirror lines up with the first line of the third parking spot we should be able to see the first headlight for example here we pass the first parking spot the second parking spot and then stop when our mirror reaches the line of the third parking spot when we select reverse we should be able to see the first headlight of this car parked next to our Target parking spot so for those of you who asked whether the technique used in the first reverse parking video would work here I can say that yes it will work in most Vehicles step 6 if we can see the headlights we tend the steering wheel full lock to the left while moving slowly we don't want to reverse too fast remember speed time and distance go hand in hand and we can overshoot our Target parking spot if we move too fast also we want to avoid dry steering as over time this can cause a new wear and tear to our car tires step 7. now we continue reversing while monitoring the side mirrors to make sure we are clearing the parked vehicles on both sides first we need to check the left hand side mirror and make sure that our car clears the vehicle on our left after clearing the car on our left and ensuring we won't hit it we shift our our Focus to the right hand side mirror to make sure our car also clears the vehicle on the right also we want to continue checking the left hand side mirror as well every now and then we can also glance at the reversing camera if we have one to ensure that our vehicle is following the correct path and nothing is in the way step 8. once we are inside our Target parking spot and straight we straighten the steering wheel to straighten the steering wheel in most Vehicles we will need to turn the steering wheel about 1.5 10 to the right to make the tires straight step 9 the last step is to make sure that our car is inside the Target parking spot and straight also we need to ensure that there is equal space on the left and the right hand side of our vehicle if we are happy with the way we parked shift the gear selector to park Engage The handbrake or the parking brake and turn off the engine if we are driving a manual car we can leave the car in first gear or reverse for safety reasons now let's do this maneuver inside the parking spot in between two cars using the steps we just went through so remember that the first step is to locate our Target parking spot Step 2 check the rear view mirror and side mirror then indicate left about 20 meters before we reach our Target parking spot it's important to indicate on time so that cars behind us and other car park users understand we are trying to park step four now we drive past our Target parking spot then stop when our car passes the first line of the third parking spot from the one we want to park in so we pass parking spot one two then stop when our left side mirror reaches the first line of the third parking spot this is our first reference point and it's the same as the one we used in part one of the video here's an important point we need to be careful here as a lot of people might get this reference point wrong it's so due to something known as special perception this means that our sitting position and the angle from which we are looking can influence how we perceive the alignment making things appear a bit differently than they actually are so even if it looks like the mirror lines up with the first line of the third parking spot it might not really be the case why is that well remember that we are sitting behind the mirror this means that from our point of view and the angle we are looking at it can seem like the mirror is in line with the first line of the third parking spot if and when it's not a handy tip to solve this is to lean forward a bit adjusting our position by leaning forward forward can give us a different perspective and help us to line up correctly now we have to prepare by selecting the reverse gear observe by checking the mirrors blind spots and physically looking at the rear we can even glance at the reversing camera if our car has one step five before turning the steering wheel we need to confirm that we have stopped at the correct reference point we do this by making sure that we can see the first headlight of this car parked next to our Target parking spot through the passenger window this is our second reference point so when we can see this headlight we move to the next step The Next Step involves turning the steering wheel so the question is do we turn the steering wheel to the left or to the right the way we think about this is here our car is in Reverse so we have to think about where the back of our car needs to go and in this case the back of the car will need to go to the left so we turn the steering wheel to the left so remember if we are in reverse and we want the back of the car to go to the left we still left and if we want the back of the car to move to the right we steer to the right it's actually similar to when we are in drive and we want the car to move forward if we are in drive and we want the front of the car to move to the left we still left and if we want the front of the car to move to the right we steer to the right also we have to remember to check our surroundings first and give way to people overtaking us step 5 now we turn the steering wheel full lock to the left while moving at a working pest speed the technique shown in this video assume that we will not be dry steering which means turning the steering wheel while stationary dry steering is a bad habit and that's why we try to avoid it in fact car experts don't recommend dry steering as is associated with tire wear and tear some places also Mark this habit as a driving error during the driving test step 6 now we continue reversing as the car gets closer to the parking spot we monitor the mirrors so we move check the left side mirror first to make sure that our car clears the vehicle on our left because we are reversing to the left the left hand side of our car will enter The Parking Spot first if we were to hit this car on our left it's the left hand side of our vehicle that we hit that's why we want to check the left hand side first if we were reverse parking to the right we will check the right hand side first as the right hand side of our vehicle will enter The Parking Spot first in this situation the left hand side is clearing this vehicle so great now we need to check the right hand side mirror to make sure that the right hand side of our vehicle is also clearing the parked vehicle on our right in this situation it's again clearing the vehicle on the right so great finally we make sure that the car is straight by looking at the front and also checking the mirrors step 7. once the car is inside our Target parking spot in straight we straighten up the tires in most cars to straighten up the tires with tender steering wheel about 1.5 10 to the right step 8. finally we need to check to see if there is equal space on the left and the right hand side we can do this by opening the door however before we open the door it's a good idea to shift the gear selector to park if we are driving in autonomous or neutral if we are driving a manual car we also need to engage the parking brake or the handbrake if the car has the parking brake make sure that it's on and if the car has a handbrake we need to make sure that we put the handbrake on sometimes if we have a reversing camera we can put the car in reverse then compare the distance on the left and the right hand side without having to open the door another important point we need to be mindful of is to make sure that our dough does not touch the car parked next to us remember if our car touches the car next to us we will scratch their car and damage their paint so we need to take extra precaution when exiting our vehicle also we want to remind our passengers about this it's not nice when someone returned to their vehicle only to find their vehicle scratched if we are happy with the way we parked we switch off the engine then exit the vehicle we can put the car in first gear or reverse for some extra protection if we are driving a manual car here are some mistakes to avoid mistake number one stopping too close to the vehicle parked on the left the problem with stopping too close is if we tend the steering wheel we'll get too close to the vehicle on the left of our Target parking spot and potentially hit it mistake number two dry steering we should always avoid turning the steering wheel while stationary whenever we can as this can cause unnecessary wear to our car tires mistake number three using improper steering techniques we don't want to be stealing like this or like that mistake number four not turning the steering wheel enough if we don't turn the steering wheel all the way the car will make a white turn and will end up too close the vehicle on the right of our Target parking spot mistake number five reversing too fast mistake number six not carrying out observations before starting the maneuver mistake number seven signaling too late or not indicating at all in one of the future video we will look at the best way to fix mistakes without wasting a lot of time and holding up traffic in the car park that's all I have for this video and I hope you found it useful remember practice makes progress and if you are doing a driving test soon I wish you the best of luck see you in the next video [Music] thank you [Music]
