so welcome back friends to another exciting and hopefully informative video on the homestead so I am very excited about today's video this is something that I have been looking for for a long time this is an old-fashioned cast-iron waffle maker probably some of you guys have seen these around they're getting rarer and rarer and the funny the kind of the interesting story is not funny growing up I came from a big hunting family and we would go hunting for a week deer hunting and then two weeks for elk hunting and and and that was before he had to draw a tag so the whole family would go there be anywhere from 20 to 40 guys and we do coordinated hunts and and we would even have a big mess tent set up where everyone would cook we'd cook breakfast for everyone and one of the guys there that did the cooking he had four of these things and I had never seen them before he and used to make waffles for all the guys on the gas stove and with these old waffle makers so I'm kind of nostalgic about them and this came into my possession from a family friend gave it to mrs. W and she thought that maybe we might want to restore this so we're gonna do that today and this applies to any sort of cast iron that you want to restore whether it be pans or dutch ovens or any of that same type of thing but how they work if you haven't seen them is that this sits on on your range gas range is best and then you of course open it up and you pour your waffle mix in and then after a minute or so you flip it over and you Brown both sides so let's take a look at it what we're gonna need to do and we'll do a full on restoration on this beautiful piece of cookware what's our raw material here we have an American number nine Griswald Griswald manufacturing company Erie Pennsylvania United States and on the other side basically the same thing carbon copy of that what's kind of cool interesting about this one is that many of them that I have seen had wooden handles and the wood handles were pretty well shot and it cut off kind of hard to replace that this is kind of nice it has the the coil spring handles and it's actually it's in very very good condition it doesn't look to me to have been used all that much it's just been probably sitting outside and it's very if we look at the inside of course this is the these are this is the waffle pattern that's how Nike shoes started right there the waffle pattern that's got some pretty heavy rust on it but nothing that we can't take care of this is the I guess for lack of a better work of a carriage and a very light rust I mean you can see that it probably maybe it wasn't outside it was just probably maybe in someone's garage but a lot of the black still there now there was some sort of a coating on here that I don't know what it was there is a combination of rust as well as a coating we don't want a coating on there you know maybe maybe there was a different school of thought back in the day before we knew of the health hazards of all of some of these industrial coatings the best thing you can see you season your cast iron with is a natural oil a vegetable oil a olive oil and then we'll season everything properly so the first order of business is to get all of this rust and this paint off of here how do we go about getting the rest off well maybe several schools of thought on that what one thing that's going to be very tempting to do is to get your grinder and your power drill out with a wire brush and have at it I wouldn't recommend that on these vintage pieces it's the it's very abrasive it any it can have a tendency to scratch into you know you you soften those hard edges on there and it's it's not not the best way to do it it's tempting because it's so fast and easy sandblasting is another way you will definitely pit the surface if you are going to sandblast it or glass beat it I'd recommend use baking soda if you have the means but for for the best way to go is just to get the heavy chunks off using a brass brush not a wire brush the wire brushes are getting too abrasive and they will get in there and they will scratch but a brass brush is really nice because it's soft it's gonna be softer than the cast iron but still it's got enough bite to it or you can really get in there and get after it now we're gonna use a chemical to strip most of this stuff off here with the big chunks knocked off now we have to tackle a problem of the rust which is not really a problem anymore using there's a couple things you can use so the probably the most economical way to go is to use a white distilled vinegar mix with water 50 you know 50/50 or so this yeah I've even used it straight it works that way my favorite stuff what works the best is this this is evapo rust I don't know what's in it is they claimed it to be non-toxic but I've used both and this stuff is like it's like a miracle it's really really good I don't know that I have enough for this maybe a third of a gallon here but you know take a wide pan some sort of a container where you can put the whole thing in and submerge it you don't have to submerge it but you do have to you want at least get half of it on there now I have if you have something that's really got a crazy shape to it you can kind of make like make a little box out of just nail together some pieces of plywood and then drape it in plastic I've done that before too and if they won't all fit don't worry about it you can kind of we're just gonna have to kind of get a get them coated and move them around it might like this one here these are not gonna all fit so whatever here's what I'm going to do I'm gonna put these in here like this and I'll just have to alternate them it's been 24 hours since we started our soak let's take a look at what we have so I tried something something new I didn't have enough of that evapo rust to cover up everything it wasn't working very well so I just poured all the the half the bottle of that what do you call it that white vinegar in there and I was hoping that wasn't gonna get hung some sort of a Honey I Shrunk the kids type of reaction but everything looks like it turned out pretty good so you can see that the rust it was is it being eaten up there by those white areas is where the heavy rust was so let's uh let me scrub this off a little bit here real quick and then we'll run some clear water over it and see see what we got I'd have to say the waffle maker cleaned up pretty nice still got a little paint I scrubbed on that quite a bit with the wire brush and I'm not overly worried about it if you wanted to take that off you have to probably get some paint stripper or use blast cabinet on it but this is just using a wire brush the main thing was getting all of this cleaned up was actually a lot of carbon on there from burnt oil that took a little bit of elbow grease on there but it looks pretty good so it's clean enough for now the handles cleaned up really nice we got all of the rust and everything out of those so now the fun part let's go get some olive oil and we'll put it put some seasoned on it to season our cast-iron waffle maker you're gonna want a heat source so like a camp stove gas stove anything like that it'll put some heat on it is good you're gonna want to some sort of a nice oil I'm gonna use olive oil at a pastry brush especially for the waffle maker because they are so there's so many nooks and crannies inside and so what we're gonna do is as this is heating we're going to just basically bake on that a kind of a layer of carbon with that pastry brush and get in there and all those cracks paint brush you know just be careful you don't hit you something that's going to be not rated for a little bit of heat you don't want to melt a bunch of plastic on there from like some cheap cheap paint brush but you got to get all the way in there go ahead and cook that whole outside - now a lot of guys when they're doing this with pans you can do it of course you can do it in the oven you could it doesn't really make any difference we want a lot we want several several coats you know half a dozen or so put that on there coat everything put a little heat on it and then we're gonna keep wiping it off as well once you coat everything with oil make sure you don't don't get too much excess on their coat coat it and then take a rag and clean clean off the excess you don't want to that paper is not the best way to go there probably add a bit there you don't want that that to burn that excess on there and get big puddles of burnt red oil on there that's gonna smoke same with the inside lot out the best you can these are a little bit tough that's why it's easier to be careful and not to put too much on the inside waffle portion cuz it's kind of hard to get it out of there alright we are back with manly manners now if you're just joining us manly manners as a small book written in 1913 sorry guys have to say this every time we have new people joining us wondering what the heck is manly manners about called don'ts for husbands on how to how to behave and how to conduct yourself in the at the Victorian age or just prior post Victorian age and to have a happy marriage for young and old alright so we're checking them off we start at the beginning we're checking them off we rented page two now and we will read and maybe it's one or maybe it's five if they're if they're not relevant to us today which some of these aren't we will just continue to move on but let's jump in page two don't take it out on your poor wife every time you have a headache or a cold it isn't her fault and she has enough to do in what to do in nursing you without having to put up with ill humor into the bargain man it that is a funny thing with men you know they talk about we we always hear that women women can be tougher than men and people say oh you know what are you talking about you know women could never play in the NFL or they could never be Navy SEALs and all these things and I think that's a misnomer I think that's not understanding what toughness is because I'll tell you what and I think that many of you would probably like me when I am sick it doesn't happen very often but when I am sick the world stops around here I do have his tendency to turn into the biggest baby I just want to lay on the couch and I want everyone I want Mrs W to know how bad I feel and I want soup I want sympathy I just I'm just absolutely useless and you know and I noticed with her that she will she can not be feeling well and she will still kind of fight through it and not complain so much and turn into such a wimp that I do sometimes and we'll actually go about and get some work done so that that's what struck me don't take it out on your wife because yeah tough toughen up I guess is what she's telling us I think men have a tendency to do that I don't know why that why that is not all of them but I know what I'm feeling not feeling good I I just AM useless now let's move on don't flourish don't flourish a grimy hankerchief about you because you have forgotten to take a clean one out of the box or your drawer if your wife provides you with a reasonable stock you might it at least take the trouble of remembering to use them so hankerchief you know a lot of guys don't use handkerchiefs I have from the very beginning of the of the channel I've always included those in my EDC's that is a key key component there's about five things you're gonna have you're gonna have a good pocketknife gonna have a hankerchief gonna have a wallet you're gonna have your keys you have a flashlight that that's what your etc' pretty much should come down to I know some piece multi-tool I don't know I don't think so I don't think for most people it's reasonable but hankerchief is really really good so what mainly manners is telling us here is that we want to always have a clean one that's that's good I'll check that one off we'll make that mistake let's do a couple more here don't stoop even if your work is desk work your wife wants to see you straight and broad-chested man old man right there how about that that's something that I have harped on to about Jack and made sure that he has done that it's easy to overlook it if you go next time you go out look around and all of the men the Millennials and the younger people and and lots of them how they're just shuffling along and the heads down and the shoulders stooped in the in the sunken in chest and it's it it looks terrible it's it's a it shows to me lack of confidence lack of purpose it's just it bugs me it's it's almost as bad it's just as bad as grabbing a man's hand for a handshake and getting there the limp fish you know which is the worst thing so I agree manly manners tells deny I'm a huge proponent of this carry yourself and your carriage erect it not only does it affect how people think you of you they're their impressions of you but it also affects yourself it affects your confidence it affects your your willingness B don't you know don't be like a big muscle meathead muscle muscle man you know with with arms out and all of that but stand up get your get your shoulders back get your get your head up look people in the eye when you meet someone when you talk to someone look them in the eye when you shake hands get a firm handshake but don't try to hurt someone there's those macho super macho guys that that try to you know squeeze your hand so hard that they hurt you and you'll notice another thing there's some guys that are that are kind of in that vein they'll they'll try to dominate you with a handshake and you'll notice that if a guy grabs your hand like this and it gives you the good squeeze and tries to roll your wrist over that's a kind of a subliminal subliminal message to both people you even though you may not realize it that I just dominated you I rolled you over I defeated you I I'm stronger than you don't allow anyone to do that to you meet them look them in the eyes get a hold of that hand if they try to roll you hold up don't roll them but don't let them roll you either and that will put you more on an even footing but if posture think about posture when you're going out keep that head up shoulders back and good posture straight back it will it'll change the way people perceive you it'll change the way you feel about yourself it's just that's one of the best manly manners they're out that was something I wasn't expecting so we'll we'll sign that one off all right that's probably probably enough manly matters for today if you enjoy these don't forget to click the thumbs up give if I get enough feedback on there we'll keep up with the manly manners they're they're kind of fun to do and we have a whole book of them we even have a book mrs. W ordered it a don'ts for wives so if you want to order one of these I'll put it in my Amazon store at wrangler mart calm you can get what i think they're like two or three bucks so it's kind of fun to read but we can get if we get through this one we can go to dumps for wives that might be interesting I haven't even cracked that one open so thanks for watching we'll see you guys in the next video
