have you got an outside tap that's stiff to turn on and off or leaking from this joint here well today on fix it with Fowler I'm going to show you how to replace your outside tap so before you can start work on the tap itself the first thing you need to do is find out where you can isolate it up from so we've come into the property and what we've got is the main isolator for the supply water supply to the house so if we turn that off that turns off all the water coming into the house however if we follow this up and follow it along you can see that it runs up because past this isolator and through the wall to the outside tap now luckily for us in this instance we've got this isolator here so we can just turn this down and that should be the water supply to the outside tap isolated now if you've not got this isolator in in this pipe you can either put one in or you can turn this off and then go to the outside tap turn it on and that will drain the water out of this pipe which will allow you to work on the top itself the next thing to do is to turn the tap on and ensure that no water is coming out now like I said if you've not got an isolator inside when you turn this on you will find some water will come out wait for that to stop before you carry on working so what you're going to need to replace this tap really simple an adjustable spanner or pipe wrench some liquid PTFE tape or if you've not got any of that you could use some normal PTFE tape and finally you're going to need a replacement tap now it's really important when you come to put an outside tap on that you get one with something called a double check valve and what that does that stops this tap from siphoning dirty water from outside into your cold water supply for your house so if you get your adjustable spanner make sure it fits the side you'll see these two flat edges put the spanner up turn in a anti-clockwise direction and you should find that that will spin the tap out and that is the tap out of the fitting so now the next stage is to actually replace this tap the next stage is just to dry out the inside of this pipe fitting so you can use a bit of cloth or kitchen roll or anything really just make sure that's nice and dry so once you've done that and you're happy with that the next options are you can either use some PTFE tape or some liquid PTFE so if you're using PTFE tape it's really important that you actually apply the tape in the same direction as the thread that way that when you put the tap into there actually tightens that tape up around the thread itself however I'm not going to use that because what happens is when you screw the it's getting tight a certain point when these books with the tap at a slight angle which means you've got to loosen it off and the tap won't be quite as secure as it could be now if we use something like this liquid PTFE tape that allow you to tighten the tap right up and once this sets that tap will be held securely in place and you won't be able to move so there's many manufacturers for liquid PTFE tape and as you can see you can use it with all metal threads it's rust approved it's good for hot and cold water and you can use it also use it on gas and compressed air the only thing to really take note is that when you come to use it it can cause skin irritation so you're best to put some gloves on before you start using it really simple to use I'm going to show you how to do that now so if you're finding this video helpful up to now then please don't forget hit that like button leave me a comment and the most important thing don't forget to subscribe to my channel so all you need to do is get your liquid PTFE and apply it to these threads now it is quite a solid mixture and that's good because as you wrap it in these threads and tying it in it will work its way through the threads and form that joint that we're looking for so we've put that on like so I'm just going to give it a light rope to get it into the actual threads itself make sure there's none on the inside of the tap actual fitting so as you can see it's really simple to use and then as we come around and it tightens up we can put that into position wipe off any excess now this this particular PTFE is non-setting so what that means is in the future if you want to get this out with a little bit of force you have to do that so I'm let's go to the needed before make sure that's nice and straight and now what we can do is go inside and turn the water supply back on okay so that's the outside tap all fitted and as you can see we've got oh as you can see we've got no water leaks that's all good and the final stage is we're going to change this end and put this on ready for an outside hose you can put hose straight on there with a jubilee clip but there's no need to do that anymore so spin that off decide which fitting you need to suit the tap in this instance we don't need that bit this tap's a bit bigger it's half inch so that comes with a rubber seal inside it you don't need any PTFE tape or anything on that then all you need to do is line that up just tiny up hand tight and that's job done
