all right youtube so today what we're going to be doing is we're going to be replacing our uh tired out old uh sprinkler valves here with some new ones um these ones were not quite installed right there a little bit too low for what they should be doing and they're just worn out the solenoids and some are shot and uh the guts of them the diaphragms and everything are pretty beat up too so we decided instead of rebuilding we're just going to replace them and what we're going to do is we're going to be replacing we're doing a little bit of an upgrade we're going up to these guys so this is my little pointer of the day instead of going to your big box store to buy a replacement valve which is going to really be no better than the ones you're ripping out go find a local irrigation supply store a place that sells to contractors you can pick up something like this it is basically a direct replacement it's a much much better valve and if you get it from a contractor supply shop you're actually going to pay less than you would be paying for just a direct replacement of one of these guys so in addition to our valve here's basically what you're going to need it's a pretty simple job uh your valve a container of cement pvc cement pvc cutters and i do recommend pvc cutters over going with a hacksaw it's going to make your life a lot easier if you're cutting on existing line you're not going to drop pieces of shavings in your line that are going to clog up your heads and your drip heads and whatnot they're only a few dollars it's well worth it just if you're gonna do a little little bit of work it's still worth the investment and then you're gonna need your various fittings we're working with three quarter inch pipe so we got some three quarter inch pipe three quarter inch fittings and then three quarter inch fitting two thread which is going to thread right here into the bottom of the valve before you start doing any work on your valves you want to make sure you shut off the water so you want to locate your water source uh here we've got a valve that can cut off the house and then a separate valve so i can cut off just the sprinklers so if you have this option you can cut off just your sprinklers otherwise you'll have to cut off basically the whole house's water while you do the job so if you got to go to the bathroom now is a good time otherwise you can just come over here and flip off your water to the sprinklers now your sprinklers are off uh it's a good idea so you don't get shot with some water to basically just come over here and turn one of these relieve the pressure in the line and once the pressure in the line is gone you're free to start cutting and you won't wind up spraying yourself okay you will also notice in here kind of a rat's nest of wires uh this piece right here this is the solenoid that actuates the actual sprinkler you're going to have two lines running off it and you're going to want to disconnect these before you start pulling things apart but you want to make sure you remember everything goes you're going to have one line that's always going to run to a signal line and then you're going to have another line which is going to run to a common ground now if you want to keep things straight and simple what you can actually do is just come over here and unscrew the solenoid take this guy off that way you won't get things mixed up as you start to cut into things and uh and disconnect stuff also if you haven't already this is a good time to kind of clean up the area around where your sprinklers are you don't want to wind up dumping some stuff down into the lines and clogging up your lines after you're cut [Music] okay so not actually remove the valve you're just going to take your uh pipe cutters here get them in around the pipe now we're going to go to the other side do the same thing there we go old valve is gone okay so now for attaching these two pieces together now i usually like to actually put the cement inside the female end of this instead of on this the reason for that is when you put it on this side when you push them together it contains all the cement inside there and you don't get drips down this side and it doesn't really matter if it's below ground but if it's above ground it's going to make a big blue line down your nice white pipe take your uh pvc cement apply a good layer in there so it's all evenly covered and then slip the two together and give it a little turn as you slip together to make sure it's all nice and evenly distributed inside there and see you only have a little bit of blue cement showing along the bottom edge so here you can see we've got two six inch sections of pipe with that threaded end on there those threaded ends now you can thread straight into the bottom of your sprinkler valve and you want to torque that down there real tight so you don't have any leaks now this is something important to check and you may run into the distance between the pipes coming off the new valve and where they were on the old valve are just a tiny bit off it's not by much um just a little bit if it's a lot you may have to actually put an elbow in there but this is such a little amount it's about an eighth of an inch or so what we're going to do is we're going to kind of cheat them in a little bit you can see we dug out a little bit of dirt between the two pipes and what we're gonna do is uh because i don't have a helper out here with me today i'm just gonna put a little clamp around it and bring them in just a little bit like that so the two pipes will fit in just right so i don't have to fight it um so next we're just gonna put some glue inside these and put the whole piece in there uh with that once you make sure it's nice and seated in there you've got yourself the the new valve is in place so the next thing we've got to worry about is uh this little bit of wiring up here at the top okay so our last thing to deal with is wiring this thing up so we're going to take our old solenoid follow the wires back so we already filed followed back the uh control wire and we hooked the new one up now we're going to follow back the ground and hook the ground up so that's just as simple as uh hooking up the old wires or the new wires where the old wires were with those wire nuts and you're all set you
