okay what we're doing here is a three tab shingle replacement uh if it's something that you feel comfortable doing on your own that is wonderful it could save you a few dollars for sure instead of calling a roofer to remedy the issue now what we have here is a broken tab this will happen in higher winds this is a three-tab shingle it doesn't have a very high wind resistance rating so this is one of the more common calls we will get so this shingle here has one two three tabs to it and how I know that is uh if we scrape this guy we can see that that's where the shingle ends so what we'll do is uh we can use a flat bar pry bar to get underneath just to kind of break the seal there's a tar strip on the course below so that we can break that seal to free that shingle a little bit more now that we have that we're going to pop the nails so you want to get underneath there pop it up push the shingle down and we're able to grab that nail and we go along to break that seal on the course above to find that now that was a has been blown through by the uh previous roofer maybe had his air compressor on a little too high so once we break that seal we get to the next nail and again that one's been as well let's pop that now [Laughter] and then we're at the end of that shingle you can see pop that now as well put that in my tool belt and get it later now if you fall on the shingle that's not going to come out because it's not only nailed here but in this row up here it has nails that are also holding a shingle so you'll need to go above as well any nails that are holding that shingle in still we'll need to take out for now we're trying to be fairly careful because we can rip the shingle if we're not careful we're going to pop these nails out and go one more over here go underneath pry it up push a shingle down and you can get those roofing nails out now since we've got all the nails out of that shingle that should come out fairly easy now the nails were in the tar line but they were also in the top of the shingle as well now that we've got that shingle set aside we've got a new one here that we're going to put in all right slides up in place like so you'll want to line up with your other shingles kind of just stay there for now until we get some Nails into her so we'll be careful when lifting these up they're a little bit more malleable in the warmer weathers but in the cold you won't want to bend that too much so we'll put our first nail lower than they actually did more so in the tar line sag down a little bit so we'll bring that up third now and fourth now now we've also um taken the nails out of this row above that's holding this shingle in so we'll go back to where we were that shingle in also hitting the top of this shingle remembering to keep your nails above where they'll be seen but low enough the top of this shingle now since this is where one shingle ends and a new shingle begins we need a nail there and also here there we have that now since these aren't going to seal too too well very quickly I like to dab my corners like so these are older and they're not going to adhere very well anything I've touched or disturbed I'm gonna bring back down with either a roofing cement an elastomeric um exterior caulking whatever your preference is Disturb This one as well so we'll put that down like so since that one isn't sealed we'll put that down foreign shingle replaced you can do this yourself you'll be saving yourself quite a bit of money but that is the roofing tutorial on how to replace a three tab shingle
